  • im older fatter and ill kick your ass

  • always, always, always the best....always.....better than Dylan...sorry.....

  • Steve Earle is one of my heroes!

This Song is one my favorites!

But when i see this video I get very sad!

I remember him with his albums Guitar Town and copperhead road.

    This song is excellent!

But the man has lost his power.

    Don't know why, Drugs? Maybe.

Anyway, it makes me sad to see him like this.

A great Musician and Songwriter down on his knees,

    I STILL LOVE HIM!

  • @SuperMunin I know what you're sayin, but when he talks in interviews and things like that, you can see that he as a person seems really happy. With him doin time and losing Townes like he did, that may have left his body broken down a bit, but his fire seems to be burning plenty bright. Also, if he would sell out and write songs for popular artists he would be huge and be getting paid! Im proud to say that Mr. Earle is one of the last true rebels alive, because he does things on his own terms!

  • @SuperMunin

Replying to an old comment - but I disagree. I think Steve Earle's done some of his best work in the last 15 years. Matter of taste, of course, since it varies in style.

  • Uh....Hmmmm.... I love his music but maybe someone should talk to him about his combover....you know.... an intervention. I'm just sayin........

  • @mokeleoombembe Innit, tho !!

  • Steve Earle is the greatest LIVING american singer/songwriter, and I'll stand on anybody's coffee table anywhere in my cowboy boots, etc etc

  • Did not know this was his. Props for a heart wrenching song. Still love the Proclaimers version tho......

  • mrgreanjeans - I agree with u 100%.

  • He is an american treasure.

  • Wow... That was what I needed to hear!!

  • On my way to Winnipeg tomorrow to see Steve perform at the Burton Cummings Theatre. Can't wait

  • goodstuff

  • Another fantastic song by Steve Earle. The man is an american treasure if you ask me, along the likes of Guy Clark, John Prine, TVZ et al.

  • @ThreeChordGuitar Well he should be. TVZ was his mentor and Steve, Guy and Towns spent a lot of time together. He learned from the best. :-)

  • So many good songs from this guy.

  • He sings of my best friend.

  • there are so many awesome singer/writers steve, shaver, guy clark, chris knight and i recently discored the genius of radney foster the list could go for days but this song in my opinion is one the best ever

  • Steve Earle famously said that Townes was a better songwriter than Dylan and thats fair enough - its his opinion . Personally i love all three of them so its a no lose situation ! But i'll tell you whos better than them all - Billy Joe Shaver ! and i'll stand on Steve Earles coffee table etc, etc, etc........

  • @shackbhoy im not sure bout that, its all relative though...i think todd snider is slipping in the back behind those guys somewhere(as far as modern songwriters are concerned). also i think townes had a certain knack for saying the intangible and being able to take you to a dark place but make it sound so damn beautiful that it was somehow okay.

  • i really like this song and teh way he sings i t

  • I have to thank The Proclaimers' beautiful version of this priceless song for introducing me to Steve Earle - a singer-songwriter for whom I have the highest regard: for his music, his lyrics, his politics, his commitment, and his courage.

  • to add my two cents on the Earle Vs. Dylan. I don't think artists can be or should be compared that way. they all march to a different beat and reach out to different people. personally steve's life and music is an inspiration for me. he's my hero!

  • good sawng; nae analysis needed

  • Well, if you think he is up there with Dylan based on this song then I'd say he has surpassed Dylan by now considering how old this song is and Steve has only gotten better with age. A true ledgend that the industry should be let slip through their grubby little fingers lol.

  • I agree. Steve Earl is awesome.

  • Steve is right up there (or damn close) with Dylan when it comes to song writing.

Just when every ray of hope was gone

I should have known that you would come along

    I can't believe I ever doubted you

    My old friend the blues

  • I'm a big Steve Earle fan, but I don't think it's really fair to compare him to Dylan do you ? Dylan has a much bigger catalogue of songs and has been covered by everybody. not to mention his iconic 60's stature. A much bigger impact on the course of musical history. Not to mention the fact that Steve Earle himself will tell you that Townes Van Zandt was a better writer than he is. So if you are going to compare anyone to Dylan it should be TVZ. IMHO

  • As far as heart and soul is concerned Steve Earl surpasses Dylan. That's my humble opinion...

  • Dylan sold out. On an Australian tour (decades ago), somebody asked him: "Mr. Dylan, why don't you write protest songs anymore?"

Dylan's reply?: "Because there is nothing left to protest about."

Steve Earle has never sold out.

  • fuckin right!

  • Steve is the real deal. Closest thing we have to Woody Guthrie, IMHO.

  • when any of you dumb asses can write a song like that, then you can comment on his weight. You are a nobody and always will be. This son of a bitch is a legend.

  • hey, none of us are as beautiful at 52 as we were at 22.....it's his heart and his voice and his incredible talent...and his willingness to share it with the world that means somuch to me......and, i say this in every post, please come back to Minneapolis!!!

  • The audio is out of sync with the video.. whats up with that?

  • Wow. Amazed anyone could really give a crap about his weight or his facial hair.

  • How long ago was this filmed?

  • No way, he had gotten waaaayyyy too thin. The beard is for The Wire, he's said many times he hates growing it.

  • awsome song
