Here's a trivia question for everyone who's watched 'All in the Family'. Archie has strong positions on every religion and every race of people. What was Archie's Race & religion???
Republicans only care about big business and they're money, they don't care about the white working man, democrats don't care about the poor either, they're all rich college types ,and don't care REALLY ABOUT RACE THEY USE RACE BAITING,to get you to vote for them,it's all a sham.once they get in they ALL throw aid to ISRAEL ,THAT's not a white intrest,so stop fence sitting ,NONE OF THESE REPUBLICANS ARE WORTH YOUR VOTES.
Archie was right at least about the catholics, this used to be an predominate prodtestant country ,it's not anymore,Bill O' Reilly shouldn't be telling White Anglo Saxon people what to think anyway,in a real old fashioned America he wouldn't be allowed on TV for being a Catholic,Hows that for the good old days, and there wouldn't be ANY JEWS IN AT ALL IN OUR GOVERNMENT EITHER,OR OBAMA,.LIKE IT IS NOW!
The really frightening thing about this show is that no network TODAY would have the balls to air it now. In a way we are far more repressed NOW than in 1974.
@roquefortfiles very true. it's hard to imagine a tv sitcom today dramatizing debate over the occupy movement, us military presence in afghanistan, rights of the undocumented, same-sex marriage, the war on drugs, etc. i guess writers, producers and advertisers just want to play it safe, avoid controversy, & maximize their earnings.
@25mfd Personally I am waiting for the day in about 20 years when we will have finally moved on from "reality" TV and American Idle and lump it all in with the same crap we did back in 1978

@roquefortfiles wrong, i watch this on the "retro" tv channels all the time. but i gotta say i still agree, no way in hell would this go on a real network :(
@whitedank11 Stereotypes are cultural constructions -- generalizations that have nothing to do with real human beings. Our differences are far fewer than our similarities. We're a human family. Get used to it.
@meadorni Are you sure about that? The people who cheer for mike and gloria also hold society back too. The whole problem with the country today is that no one can take a joke anymore. Pathetic.
@Bystandah But the producer intended the joke to be on Archie. His character was intended to battle racism and bigotry. Anyway, Archie's words are no longer "jokes." Now they're just bullying, hampering everyone's right to live free of prejudice and oppression.
It was actually funny because he was making fun of people who really thought that way. Some people still think the way he was speaking, but then again those people aren't funny, aren't doing it for comedy and shouldn't be paid any attention.
The way I look at it, some might not see it this way, it shows how ridiculous some of this "logic" is. You don't rank people by race cause that's stupid. That's the genius of this show. They put the stuff out there for people to think about.
The show was most likely discontinued when it was discovered too many viewers began to identify with, and thus agree with, the lead character. While the character of Archie Bunker was greatly exaggerated, the core of much he said often made sense to many. Indeed, given the alternatives (Meathead, Gloria, etc), the character of Archie Bunker usually seemed the most sane.
In the original English show, Alf was put down by his son-in-law Mike, usually in a funny way, to counter his bigoted views. In the Bunkers Mike is a stooge and does not counter Archie enough or put him down effectively. Archie is the totally dominant character, while Alf and MIke were near equal.
@NearAbbeyRoad The American version had to be that way. In the US a man's home is his castle. There's no way an American audience would have accepted the live in bum as equal to the guy who paid the bills. Archie was portrayed not as stupid, but as ignorant. He's not evil, just uneducated. But he has a lifetime of experience that the liberal Meathead doesn't. Mike believes himself to be educated because he's taken classes, but he's an idiot without the experience of he who supports him.
By equal, I mean Alf & Mike were not like the wise one & stooge in the comedy double act. Archie totally dominates MIke, although he does have a go at him. Alf was most of the time put down after his bigot blasts. Archie is rarely put down by MIke. Archie just get his views through almost unopposed at times. Alf never.
Johnny Speight, the creator of Alf & Mike, also co-wrote All in the Family. AITF was the most shocking TV show ever in the USA. Everyone knew an Archie.
@NearAbbeyRoad Most of Archie's crazy statements were self explanatory, no answer was needed. I never saw Alf, so I can only guess that perhaps it was less obvious? Also, part of the magic of the show was that both Archie and Mike were wrong more often than right, and for the same reason. Their ideals were flawed. Archie was ignorant and uneducated, but had life experience. Mike was ignorant and educated, so believed himself to be better and was unable to recognize his ignorance.
@wrjamescom The producer of the show intended Mike's character to be the rational and reasonable one, and Archie to be the pitiful bigot. The characters cannot be equated so simply.
@meadorni Perhaps, but if so it was pretty subtle. If the same show were made today, it would be rotten for that reason, it would be nothing but a political propaganda program. I think when it was made they wanted to contrast the right wing extreme with the left wing extreme and portray the flaws (and the good) of both. Mike was educated but incompetent at handling the real world, Archie had great difficulty understanding change. They were both very flawed characters.
@wrjamescom The show would be retarded if it was one sided. It would be like if Fox News had a TV sitcom. Fair and balanced my ass :D. Its good to hear logic and anti-logic. Else you just have people agreeing.
Archie had a funny way of saying what the rest of us were already thinking. The only people who objected were the holier-than-thou hippies like Mike and Gloria.
@theknightlynews Gloria and Mike were not the only ones. Maybe the blacks, the Puerto Ricans, "the japs and the chinks" were on the same page...YA THINK?
@theknightlynews I know. The holier-than-thou stuff gets extremely grating sometimes. I think hippies are just people who don't want to confront the difficulties of life, like Mike up in his academic ivory tower.
@theknightlynews Hippies don't object to what Archie says, because they know the fact that Archie is the satirical mouthpiece of liberal writers who are making fun of conservatives. Why would hippies object to conservatives being made out to be idiots, and then proving it when they don't understand and think Archie is for real.
@avatarmn Who said they objected to the show? They objected to conservatives, so the writers tried to make them look foolish, but in the end the joke was on them because Archie's lines got the biggest applause.
@avatarmn Perhaps if you watch more episodes, you will hear applause after many of Archie's statements. They laugh because it sounds funny, but they applaud because it's funny and more than a little true. Ever heard of the expression, "It's funny because it's true". Watch the clip to the right, "Archie Bunker Gives a History Lesson", in which he discusses the French. He gets a nice round of applause after that.
@theknightlynews I've seen the whole series, within the last few years. And I know that all of the actors and all of the writers thought Archie was an idiot. I watched that clip, and the audience is laughing at the writers' skill at writing stereotypical conservative nonsense in a clever way, and O'Connor's skill at delivering it as if it was a gem. The French lost because they were putting up naked statues? HAHAHAHAHA! [applause]
@avatarmn The audience applauds Archie's line, as they did many of his lines. Spin that away to your heart's content. Most of the time they just laugh, but when he makes a generalization about the world in a very politically incorrect way, people agree in principle and applaud when they laugh just as they applaud a stand up comic ranting about the world. Therein lies the applause. He said things that were way over the line. But his point is what people appreciate.
@theknightlynews You think there's a point to Archie saying that the French lost wars because they're sexually permissive, and the audience appreciates that? What POSSIBLE point could that be?
@avatarmn You take things literally. The French have a bad reputation for surrendering so easily to the Germans. So the joke is that they are lovers not fighters. There are many French jokes along those lines. And it is this reputation that Archie was referring to. Archie doesn't make up any of these ideas. These are universal themes. Railing against Archie Bunker is completely missing the point.
@theknightlynews Nobody rails against Archie Bunker. They appreciate him as hilarious liberal satire of conservatives, or they are thick-headed conservatives who can't tell when they're being made fun of and they love him.
@theknightlynews "the writers tried to make them look foolish, but in the end the joke was on them because Archie's lines got the biggest applause. " and who do you think wrote those lines? i think the jokes on you.
@einsteinadonis The joke was on them, because they weren't expecting applause - only laughs. People who say stupid things, are not supposed to get applause. They are only supposed to be laughed at.
@HORSE1492 Oh cmon now. Leave the fairytales at church, Mr Capslock. This is a comedy. The bible does not even know what comedy is. Unless you find genocide amusing.
Edith: "Archie, it's 2011. Don't you drink tea now?"
Archie: "Lemme tell ya somethin', dingbat: The day when people who think like me drink tea instead o' beer, like them English queers do, is the day people who think like me are doomed to bein' irrelevant!"
@IwontConform HGWT5763. 06/04/01/2011 A.D.YOU PREFERED THE EPISODES WITH NO SO-CALLED NIGGERS.I,FOR ONE,HAPPEN TO BE AN AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND I AM DAMNED PROUD OF IT.NOT NOW,NEVER WAS,NEVER HAVE BEEN AND NEVER SHALL BE A NIGGER.ONE OF THE REASONS NORMAN LEAR STARTED THIS PROGRAM WAS TO SHOW HOW FOOLISH AND ABSURD RACISM AND ANTI-SEMITISM TRULY WAS.
@HORSE1492 Maybe not so foolish and absurd.So-called "racism" has helped me and many other whites to be aware of certain ideological agendas that are trying to destroy racial identity by denying the very existence of race itself and of racial differences. If i had been racially "tolerant",i would`ve played right into the hands of the ideologues with their fake morality of a "raceless" society where everyone is viewed as the "same".So,"racism" actually helps confirm the reality of race.
The funny thing is that there are a lot of conservatives who really like the Archie Bunker character that don't seem to get that he is mocking the very ideals they believe in.
@mygaffer No,the funny thing is that liberals dont seem to get that the show was not created for,and the character of archie was not selected expressly for,the purpose of "mocking" conservatives or their ideals.I knew the show`s producer norman lear, and he has not confirmed any of the observations made about the show or its intended portrayal of "liberals" or "conservatives".The show was used merely as a satirical platform for exploring many issues of the day from various perspectives
@IwontConform HGWT5763. 01/04/03/2011 A.D. ARCHIE BUNKED ACTUALLY EXISTED LONG BEFORE THIS PROGRAM WAS EVER CONCEIVED AND EVEN LONGER BEFORE CARROLL OCONNOR WAS EVEN BORN.YES,IT WAS A SITUATION COMEDY SERIES,BUT THERE ARE TIMES WHEN A COMEDY SHOW CAN TEACH YOU VALUABLE LESSONS ABOUT HUMAN NATURE.FOR EXAMPLE,NO ONE,MALE OR FEMALE,SHOULD BE FORCED TO SUBMIT TO BIGOTRY AND ANTI-SEMITISM AGAINST THIER WILL.
@IwontConform I don't care what your dear friend Norman told you, it is obvious to anyone that Archie's a simple guy with some laughable ideas about race and other issues. Archie is not a villain but it is made painfully obvious that he has a lot of antiquated ideas that we should find offensive or laughable.
I dont know what episode it was but Archie killed me, lol..a black family moved in to the neighborhood, and he was ok with it..then word got out that another one was coming in, and he went nuts. He said "One black family in the neighborhood makes it a novelty, having two makes it a ghetto." ...lmao..oh the things they got away with.
I miss "All In The Family". It was so real to life. It showed what your typical conservative was like; obtuse, racist, fearful, anti-Semitic, resentful, defensive, and living in a world where only "regular white guys" were supposed to make all of the rules while everyone else followed. Meanwhile, the rich white men at the top would snicker in private at these dolts like Archie Bunker who went out every day and got on their knees for them. The show was hilarious, however.
@bdj010 HGWT5763. ARCHIE BUNKER WAS JUST ONE OF THOSE WHO APPARENTLY HAD DIFFICULTY ACCEPTING THE FACT THAT THE AMERICA HE CAME FROM WAS NO LONGER THE ONE HE GREW UP IN,WE,AS AFRICAN-AMERICANS SIMPLY MADE IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT WE WERE NOT GOING TO BE SHOVED ASIDE OR KICKED AROUND EVER AGAIN.THERE WAS A CANCER GROWING UPON THIS NATION,CALLED RACE CANCER-AND WE WERE DETERMINED TO REMOVE IT ONCE AND FOR ALL BEFORE THE WHOLE COUNTRY WAS KILLED BY IT.
@bdj010 HGWT5763. 01/04/03/2011 A.D.ARCHIE BUNKER WAS JUST ONE OF THOSE WHO APPARENTLY HAD DIFFICULTY ACCEPTING THE FACT THAT THE AMERICA HE CAME FROM WAS NO LONGER THE ONE HE GREW UP IN,WE,AS AFRICAN-AMERICANS SIMPLY MADE IT ABUNDANTLY CLEAR THAT WE WERE NOT GOING TO BE SHOVED ASIDE OR KICKED AROUND EVER AGAIN.THERE WAS A CANCER GROWING UPON THIS NATION,CALLED RACE CANCER-AND WE WERE DETERMINED TO REMOVE IT ONCE AND FOR ALL BEFORE THE WHOLE COUNTRY WAS KILLED BY IT.
Except, Mike earned his master's and moved out with Gloria and his grandson and made more money than Archie ever did and took better care of his daughter than he ever could anyone(his getting fired for that nude march aside).
Don't fool yourself, the Jewish were quite often referred to,... he commented once about their Sabbath on Fridays, and Archie told Lionel they tried to get their prayers in line before the Christians... his insults only show his own ignorance. A great episode also was when he and Mike were locked in the basement of the bar... Archie gets a little drunk, and admits he was considerably abused by his father, explaining maybe how skewed his views are.
asshole jews write this shit like they write everything else in hollywood. you'll hear japs, chinks, daigos, spics, wops, ginnys, krauts... everything but kikes. the jew writers in hollywood tear everybody's heritage and religion apart except their own
Carrol O'Connor said in an interview once that everyone knew someone like Archie, an uncle, father, brother, somebody, which is why he was so popular.
@pureoaknut I think some people use the name "Archie Bunker" as more pf an adjective sometimes when their describing certain people. ... "He's an Archie Bunker."
The world is politically correct because it hasn't yet found a way to rid all the neo-nazi factions, the KKK and such. Until jokes like this aren't used as a weapon, they will continue to be banned.

Railing against Archie Bunker is completely missing the point.
theknightlynews 3 months ago
@theknightlynews Nobody rails against Archie Bunker. They appreciate him as hilarious liberal satire of conservatives, or they are thick-headed conservatives who can't tell when they're being made fun of and they love him.
avatarmn 3 months ago
@theknightlynews "the writers tried to make them look foolish, but in the end the joke was on them because Archie's lines got the biggest applause. " and who do you think wrote those lines? i think the jokes on you.
einsteinadonis 3 months ago
@einsteinadonis The joke was on them, because they weren't expecting applause - only laughs. People who say stupid things, are not supposed to get applause. They are only supposed to be laughed at.

we loved this show back in the 70s.But we preferred the episodes with no niggers. This was the single most important sitcom of the era.
IwontConform 11 months ago
HORSE1492 11 months ago 4
@HORSE1492 Maybe not so foolish and absurd.So-called "racism" has helped me and many other whites to be aware of certain ideological agendas that are trying to destroy racial identity by denying the very existence of race itself and of racial differences. If i had been racially "tolerant",i would`ve played right into the hands of the ideologues with their fake morality of a "raceless" society where everyone is viewed as the "same".So,"racism" actually helps confirm the reality of race.

The funny thing is that there are a lot of conservatives who really like the Archie Bunker character that don't seem to get that he is mocking the very ideals they believe in.
mygaffer 1 year ago 4
@mygaffer No,the funny thing is that liberals dont seem to get that the show was not created for,and the character of archie was not selected expressly for,the purpose of "mocking" conservatives or their ideals.I knew the show`s producer norman lear, and he has not confirmed any of the observations made about the show or its intended portrayal of "liberals" or "conservatives".The show was used merely as a satirical platform for exploring many issues of the day from various perspectives
IwontConform 11 months ago
HORSE1492 11 months ago
@IwontConform I don't care what your dear friend Norman told you, it is obvious to anyone that Archie's a simple guy with some laughable ideas about race and other issues. Archie is not a villain but it is made painfully obvious that he has a lot of antiquated ideas that we should find offensive or laughable.
mygaffer 10 months ago 2
@mygaffer I know, it's the funniest (and saddest) aspect of the show!

I dont know what episode it was but Archie killed me, lol..a black family moved in to the neighborhood, and he was ok with it..then word got out that another one was coming in, and he went nuts.
