I interpreted this song differently: She realizes the person she loves does not love her back. Though this person is who she WANTED -- this person is not who she NEEDS, and she will not settle for less. So, she chooses passion over pride, i.e. she choose real love vs. fake mask. She plays with the idea of learning to be with someone who gives her things she isn't afraid to lose (unimportant things), but she knows she never will. Therefore, she'd rather it be a "long goodbye" i.e. never reunite.

In my opinion this song is about 2 people who really do love each other but they know that they are not right for each other and sadly they cant keep living a lie. So the two lovers plan to say goodbye swallowing their pride and making love to each other as passionately as possible, knowing tomorrow they begin life without one another. A good song to listen to after this is Boys 2 men - the last time.
