I have the DVD of this concert. It's about as diverse as it gets coming from one artist. In the middle of this song there's a shot of a young couple....she's got her arms around him. For some odd reason I wonder about them.......did they make it? Where are they now? For whatever reason no other videos bring these thoughts. It's just that with this music and the way the crowd seems to enjoy the show, they seem locked in time, stuck in this video. Maybe I'm just nuts, but I love this song.
This concert was on HBO almost 30 years ago. We were at a bar that was less than a mile from one of those "megachurches" and there was about 100 people from that church there watching the concert with us. They were really into this song and they were dancing and getting down. The TV was rigged to the sound system and was playing at almost full blast with virtually no THD and it was awesome. If anyone can reach accross the cultural divide, it's Neil Young. We all loved it.
@tremer88 Yeah, the preacher was none too happy about and we all heard about it the following Sunday. Every single one of us left the church as a direct result of it.
I first enjoyed this video over 20 years ago... now I like it even better... a Mexican enjoying a Canadian rocking the Germans... God bless Rock n' Roll ... it's all good... lol
This is one of my all-time Neil Young favorites. The first time i saw the video, i was just stunned by the intensity. I could not get the song out of my head for weeks.
I always thought Nils was having a blast roaming the stage, especially in the electronic numbers. Remember that was new territory at the time. I play those songs like Sample & Hold to friends into electronica and they are amazed that they were going that in '82. I think Nils was reveling in the creation of the moment.
I just wish Young would have continued in that direction...
neil young has allways been a perfectionist if he don't think it's perfect he won't record or perform it. I think in a interview he had said that after the wall fell the song didn't have as much impact or relavence so he shelf'd it..kickin tune tho..
I have always been curious why Neil never released this great song from his Berlin concert in 1982. What a great and timely song.
German band BozzRock Band has made a very good version of this song.
Neil had great musicians with him on this concert, including Bruce Palmer and Nils Lofgren. I agree with a poster than Nils Lofgren needlessly roamed the stage during this song in order to gain attention for himself.
@rhwestwood Well if you watch the whole concert, he does that during every song, so I figure that's just his thing. This song is more somber than all of the others played that night (except Neil's acoustic interlude, which he does solo), so I kind of agree it's kinda out of place, but I defy you to watch him on Computer Age or Cinnamon Girl from the same show and tell me his stage antics are not entertaining. He boosts the entertainment level considerably overall I'd say.
i've always loved that concert and especially bruce palmer's thumb stile bass playing. i've always hated nils lofgren's stupid stage appearance. he don't fit in there

Also I agree this song deserves an official release, and Bruce Palmer definitely kills it on this tune.
