So the condescending white hippie-wannabes and cheapo Chinese labor think they're gonna save those poor, ignorant Africans from themselves. But peek under the rug at all the hidden subsidies and massive energy inputs needed, and suddenly it's not so green.
Reducing PM2.5 particulate exposure is laudable, but what happens to wood sellers when their income drops 70%? An Indian study showed that with an extra stove, fuel use remained constant, the non-cooking fuel being used to heat water.
Providing Efficiency, low cost, smoke reduction, respiratory illness reduction and other benefits to the local population, is somehow an evil foisted onto the rest of the unsuspecting 3rd world countries by the evil industrialist countries.
Good grief! Global warming is a hoax.
In the 70's these phony’s claimed a new ice age was coming.
CO2 levels were 800% higher.
Do not be fooled by the Global warming hoaxers.
These people are so stupid they are a danger to themselves and the rest of us..
@Tankdriver100 I'm pretty sure with regards to fumes children will fair far better not having to breath in Paraffin fumes. For this alone I'm sure you can see an advantage of having a stovetec.
If you people can get past your petty bickering and bullshit jabs, can someone when they get sober, tell me what these things are fueled with that makes them so efficient? If it's wood, then with that small space underneath, you couldn't get much of a fire going to bring anything to a boil, therefore, I'm missing something. Anyone sober yet enough to answer?
They use wood for fuel, dry wood is best, but with care damp / wet wood will work once lit. The combination of dimensions and materials make them so efficient.
Google 'Aprovecho Reseach Center' for more information, it's all there.

argument darkens the heart. i am not going to respond to any other people who do not even understand what i am saying. i have no problem with saving the world, and i have no problem with helping poor people. but i don't like when rich people impose their values on innocent poor people--the real pollution problem comes only from industrialized societies, pollution which disproportionately harms the very people that you are trying to reform by making them use "clean" stoves.
@deeds1957 "Has anyone thought to say "stop having babies that you cannot afford to feed"."
thats probably a cure yes, but lets put this in better perspective. If the rest of the "poorer" world could live with 10% of what north americans get everyday..they'd never have to struggle in their environment. So to take away a liberty that they CAN practice (child bearing) is like taking away yet another benefit. Taking away rights from people doesn't "improve" life. Edify & make capable.
wow cool if they can get 1 million poor people to use those stoves for a couple years they will have made up for what 3 or 4 Americans spew into the atmosphere every morning.
@sabaqat Please purchase one of these stoves and donate it so someone can hope to have 1/10000 the comforts you have. You speak freely, type on your computer freely. @jimsgma rich people hire worker people to make things to sell to poor people so that poor people can be clean, meanwhile all rich people pollute much more than poor people, so the whole reason for this stove-building seems to be to remove the mote from the eyes of poor people. Anyway it is still good, i have nothing against this guy with the clay rocket stoves. My point is just that American Airlines by itself probably pollutes more than most entire nations in the third world.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@daniel3484 the point is that the whole idea is wrong. there is pollution in the world, which is caused by industrialization. industrialized people see pollution in the world and blame it on poor people who have nothing and are not responsible for the real pollution problem. in order to solve the nonexistent or minimally important problem of pollution from poor people they invent an entire new industry to save the world from the encroachment of pollution from poor people. it's arrogant
@sabaqat They didnt give them stoves for pollution, they gave them stoves because its more efficient at burning fuel. So it doesnt cost as much for them to heat and cook. Your hatred for Americans and the rich clouded your judgement.

@daniel3484 :28--Aprovecho founder: "1.6 million people die because of breathing this smoke, and our planet is threatened by that same smoke... stoves are the most direct, most affordable way, of addressing climate change..."
@sabaqat Your right, they are concerned about climate change. And they are helping the poor with efficient stoves. The question is then, why are you trolling? They cant change the whole world.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@daniel3484 i'm not trolling, i just want to stick to my original point that it is arrogant to go to the third world and fix the pollution from the third world when on an off day a person in the industrialized world produces more pollution than many many people from the third world. that's it. i have no problem with aprovecho except for that arrogance. it's weird, western people go all over the world polluting and murdering and then moralize about poor people needing to pollute less.
@sabaqat So they should never mention that it helps climate change also, because its just a drop in the bucket? Maybe they are just marketing their efficient stoves that way. The stoves help the environment and poor people of all kinds. Its time for both of us to move on.
The US is the world's greatest polluter in terms of cumulative emissions and per capita. There are smaller countries with larger per capita emissions. While China may be a larger emitter, historically, the USA wins out easily in terms of cumulative and per capita emissions over China. Much of China's emissions are in-effect, just industrialised countries' emissions exported to China.
Plus China is doing much more than the US to reduce emissions.
@sabaqat They didnt give them stoves for pollution, they gave them stoves because its more efficient at burning fuel. So it doesnt cost as much for them to heat and cook. Your hatred for Americans and the rich clouded your judgement.
No Trader and Tom, I'm not only a Republican, I make Rush Limbaugh look like Ted Kennedy. But we've purchased 5 acres and are building a small home (cash - no loans) and setting up an aquaponics system and want to put a rocket stove in the greenhouse for winter warmth. Many of us think this is a great idea. But "climate change?" Please. The climate changes. All the time. When I was a kid we called it WEATHER.
I must be the only republican that actually thinks this is a nice idea and gesture. Its a shame that the materials and production for this arent being done in Africa, where it is needed and would give these poor people a means to support themselves with it and sell them in addition to using them so they can be self sustaining and not dependent on China. I dont hate China, but I believe that all the worlds manufacturing shouldnt be done there, and by the way, I am in a labor union too! Paradox!
You could buy one of those for $100 or you could pay $10 for a 4" elbow and 24" x 4" piece of metal ducting and get the exact same thing. I'm sure they can find some rocks to prop it up.
I made my own out of 4" ducting with 2-Tconnectors a 24" pipe and a 4"-6" expander with a 6" cap. Put the cap in the expander and fill it with rocks, put a T-conector in it with the hole on the side with the other end of the pipe going up, fit the 24" pipe into the top of the T and the last T in with hole up.
This is awesome, you can got o the website and pay over a hundred bucks to buy one for yourself, or you can buy one for someone who "needs it" and only pay 15 bucks.
hello sheep. america is not leading the way on this, or any technology because we are fat and lazy, and won't work for less than ten bucks an hour. it's true. whether you like it or not, it's cheaper to ship raw materials to developing countries, manufacture the goods there, and ship them back across the ocean to distribute them from here than it is to manufacture goods here. until we get rid of labor unions, workers rights and harassment laws we will never be able to compete. period
So why is Obama not implementing large scale programs like this in the U.S.? Why are Americans not leading the way forward, into a cleaner, better world? Is the stranglehold of oil really that absolute? Are we just going to go to war with Iran, because the king of Saudi Arabia wants it? If Americans lead the way, we can profit by exporting Yankee know how, and products; why isn't this happening? I'd like to see some real change, as was promised, that's why I voted for Obama.
@hummlyhummly I'm sure that even if Obama tried to implement this, the neo-conservatives would find a reason to be against it. I agree that he should advocate for such programs, but with the system of checks and balances we have in place, everybody has got to be on board.
@stap0510, I have no "party"--I'm an Independent. I blame the neo-conservatives for doing the same thing you seem to be blaming Obama for--all talk, no action.
wood or coal she says, clearly not seeing the difference that coal is fossil and wood is not. It is FOSSIL FUEL that is the problem, and imperial mentality, in general
cooking on a wood fire has no net effect on climate change or atmospheric carbon if forests regrow and wood farming is done well... it is far far better than cooking on gas or electric.. people don't seem to understand the difference between burning fossil fuels, which returns the atmosphere to its prehistoric state, and burning wood, which has no net effect on atmospheric CO2 OVER THE COMPLETE CYCLE from plant growth to burning, because the plant is MADE OF ATMOSPHERIC CO2. Dont use FOSSIL FUEL
fantastic to see.
