when you are painting a bamboo, and as a teacher, you should kno that bamboo leaves are SHARP pointed and long. And besides, your brush is too dry.. Thats a DEAD bamboo.
I've been trying this by myself for a week and then saw your videos a couple of times.I switched of my computer and tried again, having this in mind, the improvement was amazing. I have to work on empying my mind though and then it just works, thank you very much.
Oh, the leaves look just like my phyllostachys vivax will look in about 1.5 months, after the culms have grown and the first leaves have begun to unfurl/grow out. Interestingly, your prohibition against pressing too hard to get curvature (2:53): my p. aurea culms will sometimes get curves in the base nodes if, after growing for 2 month, lose moisture (get less rain)... but that's horticulture, not painting. :-)
on some tutorals they say to not place 3 bamboo leaf clusters with 2 or 4. that it should stay with 3 throughout the painting. Is that true? or is it just a matter of preference? I would like to know that way i could practice a bit more if so. and like yours. it has a 5 leaf cluster. does that mean you have to keep it 5? I wish I had a bit more money to buy your dvd. im sorry for all the questions.
I wondered what a newspaper printer would say if we went in and asked for a length of blank paper. Every town hasd a local newspaper company, perhaps with the promise of a subscription they may load you with a roll of blank newspaper paper.
This is one of my favorites of ALL time! I take art classes in college and you explain your technique in terms much better than my professors (you paint better than they do too)! You are fantastic artist! Please don't stop making instructional videos, they are great!

I shall see if that is the case here in France.
