pretty impressive for a white kid. From what I can tell, you're talking about your experience in Japan right? you went to a karaoke bar; and there were a bunch of other details that i don't seem to remember. You were quite fluent because I understood the whole jist of what you were saying.
But, you should do something about your hair; get some bangs or a fringe b/c the camera seems to make your forehead a little bigger than it probably is- and that dould be quite distracting.
I have been studying Japanese on and off for over five years (some definitely forgotten!) and I thought your accent was quite good. As for look different....speaking English is a lot different than speaking Japanese. Your mouth makes almost completely different movements when speaking it. When I do my voice becomes more expressive and has a softer pitch which is what happens to hers.
Why do people change their voice, facial expression and hand movements when they speak Japanese. I dont understand it. You dont see the natives becoming more animated when they speak.
Well if they didn't they might as well just be speaking English. If you don't know Japanese yourself, there is no way you can understand it. It's not just a language but also the culture and mannerisms that come with it that determine if you are fluent or not. It would be strange if they acted normally but Japanese came out of their mouths.

dude you're wrong.. I had lived in Japan for 2 years. In my experiences, they know China well and are very fond of Taiwan (a part of China). But more than 90% of Japanese people usually totally indifferent about Korea and then don't know anything about Korea. Many people who know Korea think that Korea is "something of China". ignorant ;-)

pretty impressive for a white kid. From what I can tell, you're talking about your experience in Japan right? you went to a karaoke bar; and there were a bunch of other details that i don't seem to remember. You were quite fluent because I understood the whole jist of what you were saying.
But, you should do something about your hair; get some bangs or a fringe b/c the camera seems to make your forehead a little bigger than it probably is- and that dould be quite distracting.

I have been studying Japanese on and off for over five years (some definitely forgotten!) and I thought your accent was quite good. As for look different....speaking English is a lot different than speaking Japanese. Your mouth makes almost completely different movements when speaking it. When I do my voice becomes more expressive and has a softer pitch which is what happens to hers.

Why do people change their voice, facial expression and hand movements when they speak Japanese. I dont understand it. You dont see the natives becoming more animated when they speak.

Well if they didn't they might as well just be speaking English. If you don't know Japanese yourself, there is no way you can understand it. It's not just a language but also the culture and mannerisms that come with it that determine if you are fluent or not. It would be strange if they acted normally but Japanese came out of their mouths.

Well, I do understand Japanese, not 100% because I'm not a native, but I have spoken to people who speak it and they dont act like gameshow hosts. There are certain gestures Japanese do that Americans dont but when you speak its just your mood.You said it determines if you are fluent? I dont see how over exaggerated hand motions and facial expressions show your fluent,or high pitched voices. I'm not saying she does that, but its the people I have seen on YT in general.

Well, I would like to say for myself that I am not a "Japan obsessed American" .. whatever that is. I am dating a Japanese guy, and have been for almost two years. I know PLENTY about the culture, please do not insult me. I studied Japanese for 5 years and am working very hard on learning it so that I can meet his parents and family and perhaps move there someday. It has nothing to do with "anime"....
