The song is about a man who is looking back on his early years during the 30's and 40's. His "young and innocent days", when he probably wen to the theater and saw shows similar to 42nd Street. That's the connection between the music and the video. Besides, the lyric "soft white dreams with sugar-coated outsides" describes most 30's musicals perfectly.
are these guys actually singing? or are they dying painfully? maybe a tummy ache? why would anyone think this vocal would add or enhance the video in any way?
@betteroffsingle Yes, yours! And why should you think the music has to enhance the video? It is the other way round. The music is great. Any video should enance or complement the music.
great song, great footage, yet somehow the two do not seem to fit...however, with that said, i am not here to criticize, only enjoy...so, no matter the vibe, i will simply delight in the fact you chose two great pieces of media!
It is a travesty that Warner Brother's has STRIPPED youtube of priceless clips, which, as I see it, should be public domain since the creators are deceased.
AGREED! I was looking for the original, unaltered footage and happened onto this. I believe YouTube has removed the orginal production number, so this is the only remaining version of this fantastic clip. The Kink have their own merit, just not here. BTW: The "Blonde" is the infamous TOBY WING!
@thebackgroundartiste Infamous in the sense that Paris Hilton is infamous, Zsa Zsa Gabor was infamous, meaning somewhat outrageous with notoriety for their era, not necessarily bad meaning evil or criminal. Famous for being Famous!
@fiftiesflashback1953 I see. I was reading up on her and couldn't find any scandals and since she married and moved away from Hollywood in the thirties and went into real estate she seems to have had a normal, long, and happy life. She had the sweetest face, I was glad to know that she hadn't died of a drug overdose or murder/suicide.
This scene was one of the closest a movie could come to a sex scene in the 1930's era of the Hays Code. This whole dance number, choreographed by Busby Berkeley, is an allusion to the two having sex. Young and innocent...but only to the untrained 21st Century eyes.
Actually, they could have shown full frontal nudity if they wanted to . they could've put anything in the film they wished. The Hays code did not come into order until 1934. sex on screen was not socially accepted nor did many people care to see such. It was considered sinful back then to show ones self having sex, and it was also considered sinful to have sex without marriage back then as well. according to the Bible, it still is. people just don't respect that anymore.
fair enough, although the earlier drafts of the prod code began coming through after 1930. but your point makes sense, and as for people not respecting it anymore, well i'd prefer to have things alluding to sex in films than the outright act portrayed. sometimes art is better than vivid realism, and i think that holds true with older films. that's why i love them so much.
It's a matter of taste, and any overt reference to or open discussion of sex was considered in bad taste until fairly recently. I know many people born out of wedlock in the 20's-30's; you're romanticizing the "morality" of another era. NO one born before 1890 would have called the 1930's (pre OR post code) an era that was respectful of the Bible! The only time people lived more "according to the Bible" was when they feared harsh punishment--or death--for not doing so.
the kiinks were great. i think the brs. finally hung it up.

zstardust838 needed to shut his eyes and that would have un'ruined' the experience.
Yes, a very peculiar pairing, but it did match the video at times. I love old movies and beautiful legs and the Kinks so power on.

@paulj0557 wrong, by the time I closed my eyes it would have been too late

I'm going to take the unpopular opinion here and say that the video ruined the experience of the song for me.

What relevance does this music have to this clip? Nothing. It just spoils the clip.

@jizzumjohnny I disagree. The original music is much worse than this Kinks song.

If you put it on mute, it's still pretty good.

Why did you destroy this fantastic document with music that is absolutely inappropriate?

@fiftiesflashback1953 Why do you say "infamous" ? That usually implies something bad .
