This review is horribly outdated, there is still grinding but nowhere near as much as was needed when this review was made. The game isn't dull, it's the opposite. I can see why you might think that though, the reviewer didn't get past the earlier levels and the main zone shown is one of the least attractive out of all of them. Despite this, MMOs aren't for everyone, despite how pretty and deep some are.

I agree with xierotron. I used to be a massive FF fan (started with 7) but over the last few years the quality of their games have dropped hugely (imo). X-2, XII, XIII and XIV suck compared to VII, VIII, IX, X and XI.
With the amount of updates, content and server maintenance they do, the fee is fair. There are still people playing it, not as many as years ago but considering it originally came out in 2002, it's impressive. I played it for years and it's my favourite FF, alongside 7. Met some awesome people and had some amazing experiences. Staying up to 6am to beat the last few CoP missions with my static springs to mind, the elation of victory, offline games can't replicate that experience.
@Seigfreid Truth be told, I despise (!) multiplayer. Perhaps that's a bit harsh, but I like the Single Player a lot more. But, for example, the multiplayer in Uncharted 2 is great. I played that a lot. But most multiplayer games are a no-go for me. FFXI the same. They could have been great stand alone games in the franchise. These online FF games should have been called: FF Online 1, FF Online 2 etc. XI and XIV should have stayed TRUE to the franchise.

It's also one of those FF-games not many people have bought and cared for, as it didn't grab as much attention as all the other FF games. I like how you just completely ignore the points I've made to move onto something else completely. If you search 'number of ffxi subscribers' in google then click the second result, it's a BBC article from 2007 saying FFXI (then) had 500,000+ subscribers. When you consider these people are paying per month, that is a large number (Square needed 200k+ to break even after launch). Obviously it's not WoW high but with the brand awareness and ad campaigns WoW put out, it never would be.
Also, paying a monthly fee is not ridiculous, it is standard practice for MMOs (bar a couple which rely on players buying in-game items instead) and not bad service of anykind. What's ridiculous is your claim FFXI would've been better without a monthly fee. If it was played without a fee, I'm sure they would have shut down the servers years ago, added nowhere near as much content or even of had enough bandwidth needed for all the players.
One more thing about the subscribers, that 500k number was just the active number of subs at that time (2007), not the total number of players that had played, then left since the game launched. Just thought I'd point that out for you before you cling onto it saying omgz, only 500k, that's terrible, no one played it! etc. Unless your next comment is gold, I'm probably going to block you because your trolling is starting to annoy me.

an hour to install lol try about 6 hours to install .... then to get anywhere good in the game say about 6 months of your life to get your jobs to at least 30 then support job to 45 then if you can get in a leach party in abby ... not to mention how much time it takes to get the new af3 which is a real pain cause you have to proc the mobs and then you are not even guranteed the drop for seals ... then to get really good gear and trial weapons you need to waste about another 3 months camping mob
@KuhoinX As the reviewer said, FFXI gets better with age and quite frankly is one of the few mmos to keep and please its fanbase. I still know people who play FFXI from when it came out at launch in the states.
I can't really answer that accurately as I don't play anymore. There was an average amount of 1-1.5k on Fenrir when I played around a year ago. Some servers were recently merged together so it might be more people on now, but a smaller amount of servers.
That was actually a pretty good review of the game. I played this game for 5 years and it was one of the most immersive games I've ever played. If they could have done some sort of endgame review I think people would grasp how awesome this game is. Too many people have tried playing for only a couple of hours or days and then given up. This game had so much to offer and I hope to god FFXIV gets it's priorities straight. It's a long process but it sounds like SE is trying hard to get it's fans.
i hate mmo's but only becuz they make u pay for everything, and altho i've never played ffxi i reli doubt it can be as deep, plot wise as the other ff's as there's no real room for character development or what ever, as there are no set characters... ect

I watched some gameplay of FFXIV. Didn't look fun at all. I'm not an MMORPG player, but still, sometimes you can't excuse a poor product. Hopefully FFXIV gets better as time goes on because it's kind of pathetic that they would release a game in a bad state.

problem with this, is it caters for the MMO fans, but not for the true FF fans. FF games are solo JRPGs and they kinda spoilt it when they started making MMOs. it would've worked great as a spinoff, but not so well as part of the franchise.

I only played it on PC so I'm not sure what to suggest... Maybe try registering on a FF11 forum or FF11AH and posting more information there and someone might be able to help you.
MMORPGs are never the complete package on release for obvious reasons, so careful about comparing them directly like that. If I do play XIV I'll be waiting at least a year for them to iron out the creases/fix the bugs first.
I was a heavy XI player but I recently quit again. It isn't too hard to level up faster now compared to years ago, and CoP quest areas are all uncapped too.
@Seigfreid Yeah that's to be expected when a game is in beta but F14 went gold months ago and it's still a piece of sh*t. Square enix rushed an unfinished game and are now facing the consequences. Just another lackluster effort from square.
I agree they rushed it out but it's still true that the quality of MMORPGs is always increasing over time. I heard FFXI had a lot of issues on its release too. XI was released in Japan a year before North America but with XIV they did a worldwide simultaneous release.
@Whistt Remember FFXI is like 7-8 years old now, so they have had time to perfect it, FFXIV isn't perfect no, but thats why it needs people to play it, to help make it better.

@Whistt FFXI is not the same anymore, don't go back thinking it will be the same game we all loved. The community now is more like WoW as SE made it easy to solo now so nobody groups together hardly. Not many people of worth play it anymore too. I wanted to go back to it but it seems I am stuck with WoW again :(
@Whistt it is actually MUCH easier to level than it used to be. Solo leveling is now completely possible. And with Abyssea, leveling is much faster than it used to be as well.
Hiya! it is very easy to level now. much of the grind has been taken away with new systems called fields of valor and grounds of valor. SE really has done a lot to make new player experience very pleasurable.
Right now if you buy the new Abyssea Edition, you get a hat called a Destrier Beret that gives you an edge (Regen, refresh, etc). Check out the new wiki. Do a keyword search for ffxi gamer escape. There they have podcasts and forums you can ask us questions.
A large amount of this information is quite dated so if your looking for reviews I'd more recommend asking someone that plays this game right now. Though some of this info is right for several years ago. Its a lot different now, though slightly time consuming still, a lot of it has changed. now you can basically solo to the level cap if you have to, which is now 80 going to 99 soon.
Though FFXIV is out soon, end of september FFXIV is out for PC.. not for 6-8 months for PS3.
This is a fucking weak review. Spent half the time compairing to other MMO's, didn't go into any detail about the community, the different jobs, races, battle system. This was one of the worst reviews of any game I have ever seen.

I hate gamespot sometimes they give fair reviews and sometimes their reviews are ridiculously bad and full of bullshit. For example Jaws Unleashed was a greatest hits game for playstation 2 and they gave it a 3 out of 10.

Yes they are. If you get it, you'll own a highly polished game which has been refined for the better since it's been out so long. On the otherhand, it's hard to predict how much longer in terms of lifespan it has left. The next online FF is quite likely to be coming out later this year, but it won't be as fine tuned as 11 for a while.
@Seigfreid FFIV probably won't be out in the US for a few years, and even then the FFXI servers will still be up for quite a while, at least until IV overtakes it in player count.
Wiki states FFXIV will be out sometime this year. You could dispute its accuracy, but the fact beta testing will begin soon suggests it isn't too far off release, maybe the end of this year or early next year at the latest.
I agree the FFXI servers will probably be active for years to come but to me it doesn't feel the same as when it was in its prime.
Final Fantasy XIV is coming out September 30th 2010 on the PC and 2011 on PS3. For all those people asking why it's not on XBOX, it was on PC and XBOX360/PS2. Square probably wanted to give FFXIV a chance with the PS3.
@Cecilink60 pc limited edition ffxiv will be a simultaneous worldwide release. its 70$ and comes out september 22nd 2010, the non limited edition pc copy will be out september 30th and the ps3 version as well a as a possible xbox 360 version will be out sometime march 2011

That was actually a pretty good review of the game. I played this game for 5 years and it was one of the most immersive games I've ever played. If they could have done some sort of endgame review I think people would grasp how awesome this game is. Too many people have tried playing for only a couple of hours or days and then given up. This game had so much to offer and I hope to god FFXIV gets it's priorities straight. It's a long process but it sounds like SE is trying hard to get it's fans.

i hate mmo's but only becuz they make u pay for everything, and altho i've never played ffxi i reli doubt it can be as deep, plot wise as the other ff's as there's no real room for character development or what ever, as there are no set characters... ect

@TheJeremyJealousy The first console it came out for was the ps2 but then not many people knew how to connect to the ps2 to the internet therefore they brought it out for xbox 360 and pc

I watched some gameplay of FFXIV. Didn't look fun at all. I'm not an MMORPG player, but still, sometimes you can't excuse a poor product. Hopefully FFXIV gets better as time goes on because it's kind of pathetic that they would release a game in a bad state.

FFXI will forever be the greatest online experience to date, wow will never come close! I HAVE PLAYED BOTH... its worth it for what you will put into it.

problem with this, is it caters for the MMO fans, but not for the true FF fans. FF games are solo JRPGs and they kinda spoilt it when they started making MMOs. it would've worked great as a spinoff, but not so well as part of the franchise.

It's sad, when I listen to this I am more sold on FFXI than FFXIV.
Though this game is old and quite grindy...it still seems like a newer game than XIV...not to mention less broken.
Been thinking about getting back into XI but I don't know how easy it will be to level as everbody's already max.

MMORPGs are never the complete package on release for obvious reasons, so careful about comparing them directly like that. If I do play XIV I'll be waiting at least a year for them to iron out the creases/fix the bugs first.
I was a heavy XI player but I recently quit again. It isn't too hard to level up faster now compared to years ago, and CoP quest areas are all uncapped too.

@Seigfreid Yeah that's to be expected when a game is in beta but F14 went gold months ago and it's still a piece of sh*t. Square enix rushed an unfinished game and are now facing the consequences. Just another lackluster effort from square.

I agree they rushed it out but it's still true that the quality of MMORPGs is always increasing over time. I heard FFXI had a lot of issues on its release too. XI was released in Japan a year before North America but with XIV they did a worldwide simultaneous release.

@Whistt Remember FFXI is like 7-8 years old now, so they have had time to perfect it, FFXIV isn't perfect no, but thats why it needs people to play it, to help make it better.
FFXIV hasn't even recieved its first REAL update yet, so give it a chance

@Whistt FFXI is not the same anymore, don't go back thinking it will be the same game we all loved. The community now is more like WoW as SE made it easy to solo now so nobody groups together hardly. Not many people of worth play it anymore too. I wanted to go back to it but it seems I am stuck with WoW again :(

@Whistt it is actually MUCH easier to level than it used to be. Solo leveling is now completely possible. And with Abyssea, leveling is much faster than it used to be as well.

Hiya! it is very easy to level now. much of the grind has been taken away with new systems called fields of valor and grounds of valor. SE really has done a lot to make new player experience very pleasurable.

Right now if you buy the new Abyssea Edition, you get a hat called a Destrier Beret that gives you an edge (Regen, refresh, etc). Check out the new wiki. Do a keyword search for ffxi gamer escape. There they have podcasts and forums you can ask us questions.

A large amount of this information is quite dated so if your looking for reviews I'd more recommend asking someone that plays this game right now. Though some of this info is right for several years ago. Its a lot different now, though slightly time consuming still, a lot of it has changed. now you can basically solo to the level cap if you have to, which is now 80 going to 99 soon.
Though FFXIV is out soon, end of september FFXIV is out for PC.. not for 6-8 months for PS3.

This is a fucking weak review. Spent half the time compairing to other MMO's, didn't go into any detail about the community, the different jobs, races, battle system. This was one of the worst reviews of any game I have ever seen.

I hate gamespot sometimes they give fair reviews and sometimes their reviews are ridiculously bad and full of bullshit. For example Jaws Unleashed was a greatest hits game for playstation 2 and they gave it a 3 out of 10.

Holy crap has Gamespot come a long way with their online game reviews in terms of visual presentation. Notwithstanding its age, a relatievly comprehensive and general coverage review!
I have a gripe though with the fact that the reviewer has hardly experienced the game; level 20 maximum lol.

Yes they are. If you get it, you'll own a highly polished game which has been refined for the better since it's been out so long. On the otherhand, it's hard to predict how much longer in terms of lifespan it has left. The next online FF is quite likely to be coming out later this year, but it won't be as fine tuned as 11 for a while.

Wiki states FFXIV will be out sometime this year. You could dispute its accuracy, but the fact beta testing will begin soon suggests it isn't too far off release, maybe the end of this year or early next year at the latest.
I agree the FFXI servers will probably be active for years to come but to me it doesn't feel the same as when it was in its prime.

Final Fantasy XIV is coming out September 30th 2010 on the PC and 2011 on PS3. For all those people asking why it's not on XBOX, it was on PC and XBOX360/PS2. Square probably wanted to give FFXIV a chance with the PS3.
