I have a habit of finding a song I like and overplaying it to the extent that it no longer gives me that awestruck feeling that accompanies hearing greatness at work.
I have listened to this song enough times in the last couple of months to add a significant figure to that view count. I'm still getting that awestruck feeling that accompanies hearing greatness at work. It's a fantastic rendition of an amazing composition.
I can play this every day and every day I stop what I'm doing to listen. It clears all the junk and noise out of my head. Unbelievably clean, expressive, lyrical, lonesome, unforced. Superb. Thank god for Tim and Darrell.
Great production by BBC. Long Time Gone ...Keep You Lamp Trimmed and Burning ...
Transatlantic Sessions was one of the best music series ever. I sure do wish some network would rebroadcast these gems. Another beautifully performed example here.
This song is in F. Basically Bb-Dm-C, Chorus is Bb-F-Bb-F-Dm-C-Bb. I can't figure out the time for the life of me, though, it's one of those weird splits that Tim is so fond of and that always drive me nuts trying to count! What a gorgeous song.
They put out an album called "Real Time" which I highly suggest to anyone. They set up some recording equipment in the living room and just started jammin in "real time" hence the name. Good stuff/
it was this video (and the Hector The Hero rendition by Jenna Reid and the Julie Fowlis footage) that made me go and harass a little record shop over here in faraway Belgium to order this DVD for me, and after a very long 2 month wait I finally got hold of them... thank you so much for posting this music and keep up your good work!
Transatlantic Sessions Series 4 starts TV transmission on BBC 2 Scotland (only) on Sunday 13 September 2009 at 22:50 BST. There are six episodes. (CD and DVD will follow).
It was following my introduction to Darrell Scott's music that I subsequently discovered Tim O'Brien, (and Paul Brady).
These guys are what is best in music. Know your instrument(s), play and sing with passion and pride. What price a ticket to Scott/O'Brien/Brady/Molsky? I'm sooo there.
do i see a capo on a mandolin there?? i thought i was the only one with the dark secret that i own a mandolin capo!!! :) i leave it at home if im going to a bluegrass jam though.
He is awesome. I shook his hand at the Kate Wolf Folk Festival a couple years ago ... he was riding a bike around and catching the music. I just about died though cuz I'm such a fan. He was really gracious.
I bought the cd this tune is on. Though I had to get through the music of scotland. This cd isnt sold here in the USA. Tim seems to tour alot in europe. I really dig he and darrell scott.
Does anyone know where to get the mp3 of this version? I bought the mp3 from Amazon, but the tempo was much faster than this. I prefer this slower version by far.
He'll be at the Cambridge Folk Festival on 2 August! And yes, this is his song and the lyrics etc are available at his website. You can find the website easily but I tried to provide the info here and my post was rejected. Just google "Brother Wind" and you'll get a link. There's a forum at the website, and I'm sure you can get help with a tab for this song there. By the way, I was able to get my own 27 June gig covered so I will get to see Tim in less than a week, can't wait!
you really have to be on the look out : I'm a big fan of Tim O'Brien and was lucky enough to notice he was playing in london in feb this year. I went to see him in this tiny venue in camden for an evening of solo performance, and even had the chance to chat with him. He was amazing, an experience I'll never forget.
So being in the UK doesn't mean you have to miss out !
just thought I'd let you know, Tim O'Brien is playing in the UK in November. He's doing 2 gigs in London and you can get your tickets online. It's quite cheap and it's definitely worth it, so check it out ...
got the chance to see Tim O'Brien play this year in a tiny venue in Camden town London. He was breathtaking. He's been my first official experience of a major bluegrass artist live, and it was so powerful it brought me to tears. He has the most beautiful voice, and he's a truly talented musician ( he played the banjo, mandolin, violin and guitar that night). And to round it all off, he's the nicest guy ever, he sung my request, had a chat with us, and gave my sister a hug : incredible !
first time i have heard this song, what a great song, i will definetly look out for his stuff....awesome.....from a guy who listens to metal music....
I'm hoping Tim and Darrell will play this beautiful song together this summer at The Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Wow! I've never heard them play together before! What a great duet!
I have had the great pleasure of seeing them together and it was magical. Their voices complement each others and their talent with instruments is mind-numbing. I hope you get the chance to experience it. :)
Oh no, I meant to add this to my favourites and I think I ended up rating it a two-star instead!!! This is 5-star all the way!! I'm "favourite"-ing it so if I need to introduce anyone to Tim's music, I can lead them to this. Now I need to find one that's funny! He's got a great sense of humour too, and a nice smile, which he never shows here. Of course, this is no light-hearted ditty!
he's a brilliant musician and singer, and he's also got a great sense of humour, as you say. I saw him live in feb this year and he was such a nice guy, he always had something funny to say between songs, not stupid mind you, but genuinely smart as well as hilarious. I would recommend seeing him live to everyone ! Soo talented... I'm sure I've seen a Youtube video were he's being funny. His commentary of Nickel Creek on Bluegrassjourney is a good reflection of his general attitude though.
For anyone within striking distance of the Pacific Northwest of the US, Tim will be on the faculty at the Fiddle Tunes festival in Port Townsend, Washington State, the first week of July. What an opportunity! I'm trying to come up with the time/money to do it. He'll also be doing a concert in Portland Oregon (near where I live) on 27th June. I have a gig myself that night! I'm trying to find a sub (I play piano) so that I can go to Tim's gig instead! He's always great.
Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott are more powerful as a combo than any other duo of musicians I've ever heard. When backed by musicians of like quality such as this, it only makes them all that much better.
Thanks for the Transatlantic sessions! All of them leave me speechless and torn between listening/watching and going and grabbing my mandolin instead! Inspiring!
