CLK BLACK SERIES > BMW M3, Black Series got tons more power and handling to rival a porsche. This M3 wont even be able to breath in the brake dust from the Black Series as it jettisons the image of the M3 in its rearview mirror. LOL
I'm not familiar with the Black series. I'll have to look it up. Something tells me it won't be in the same price bracket however, so maybe it would be more of a match for the e92 M3 CSL when it comes out.
As for the 2+ cylinder issue on the engine. Remember that 3 series use inline-6 engines. So if anything it will be shorter since the new engine is a V8. 4 rows side by side, vs the straight 6 in a row.
But the V8 needs a Bigger cooling system, uses a different form of NA induction, and would sit wider for the Exhaust headers. Plus not to mention the reseviors for additional cooling fluid and the placement of the distributor cap and the electrical system. Bigger suspension, control arms, struts, and axles. All that encroaches in the engine bay.
I know the Black series is like 100,000 more. But people with BMWs think they outrun everybody except other BMWs. This is 2007 everyone has taken notice to BMWs power, now they want to challenge it. The 333li is king when it comes to the twin turbo 6.
I just looked up that CLK AMG Black Series. It certainly looks like a beast. IT said it ran about 100k pounds. So thats around $200k directly converted. Since we get good deals in the US on german cars it'll probly be around $140k-$160k.
As for the cooling, you are also correct. The cooling issue is the reason why the new M3 has no fog lights, they removed them to increase air flow to the engine. But the requirement of more cooling doesn't necessarily mean that the weight has shifted forward.
As good as they claim the new M3 to be: it wont be "blowing away the competition" specifically not the RS4, which is just too damn good and apparently a better overall engineered car. I'm no engineer, but i'm learning. I think the RS4 is a better balanced car overall and will do just as well or better on the track. But we'll just have to wait and see...
Martek, this car is being seen as too little too late. Wait for the CSL or a reworked engine and 7 spd trany to come along b4 you throw your hard worked dollars at the thing. I plan on waiting until about a year after launch to buy one. Simply because I've seen how many times changes occur about 1 year into production. I respect your comments. I also try not to be bias, but many times they sound bias or judgmental. I love all the Euro autos, except for that damn VW beetle. No doubt BMW will make this a great car, but they need to make a better chassis for the V8. BMW is always known for their weight balance. And this heavy V8 throws the M3 off that beloved balance.
mmm. I haven't heard any complaints yet about the balance of the car being off because of the V8. The only complain somewhat along those lines that I've read about is that for some reason to one magezine reviewer the steering felt a bit numb, esp. when compared to a 335. I thought that review to be a bit odd though.

I simply feel that your understanding of the engine though is a result of being un-informed about BMW's approach in the new engine. I know its 33lbs lighter then the previous I6, but with 2+ cyl wouldnt they have to sit it a bit more forward. But even Gerhard Richter(V.P for BMW M division)in a interview states the car has too much understeer and that the rivals has already pass the mark the M3 has made in its newer form. 0-62: 2008 M3 4.8sec, 2008 C63 4.5sec(the power was turned down in its engine), 2008 RS4 4.5(currently the engine is under redisign for more power). And how much you think it will cost to repair this machine.

This bmw m3 still has catching up to do. 295 lbs of torque wont cut it and the hp is only 414 that revs max at 8400 rpm. With benz making 6.2 V8 upward of 512 hp and 480 lbs of torque and audi going back to crank more from there 4.2 V8 it leaves the new m3 lacking. When it comes to engine power of V8's its Benz > Audi > BMW. When it comes to control its BMW > Audi > Benz(Exception for the Black Series though). When it comes to praticality its Audi > Benz > BMW. Hey but it is just my opinion.
Your making the same mistake most make. Just looking at the raw max peak number. It only has 295 torque, but it has that torque nearly all throughout the RPM range. You hit max torque at about 2-3k rpm and keep it all the way to 8.4k. This equals unrivaled throttle responce and power on tap nearly all the time.
Yes samthing is on the paper I am reading. the higher rev is a drawback the engine will wear quicker then the others which might mean more time in the shop than on the street. On the road in straights yes it will give you the fun you seek, but on track it just has too much understeer, that alone will counter the power production in corners meaning more breaking thus slower track times.

The lump in the hood isn't that good looking. BMW should have just raised the height a few cm that way a smooth hood could have fit. Aside from that, this car is great looking.

I still say the 2002+ 7 series is an ugly style. This one's a little better, but not much. I bet this thing is going to be a real gas-guzzler; probably 12-14 mpg. It's a shame. My 03' M3 is actually pretty good on fuel economy, about 23-24 mpg. By the way, 7035096285 probably owns a 1991 Honda Civic with 200,000 miles on the engine.

This bmw m3 still has catching up to do. 295 lbs of torque wont cut it and the hp is only 414 that revs max at 8400 rpm. With benz making 6.2 V8 upward of 512 hp and 480 lbs of torque and audi going back to crank more from there 4.2 V8 it leaves the new m3 lacking. When it comes to engine power of V8's its Benz > Audi > BMW. When it comes to control its BMW > Audi > Benz(Exception for the Black Series though). When it comes to praticality its Audi > Benz > BMW. Hey but it is just my opinion.

Your making the same mistake most make. Just looking at the raw max peak number. It only has 295 torque, but it has that torque nearly all throughout the RPM range. You hit max torque at about 2-3k rpm and keep it all the way to 8.4k. This equals unrivaled throttle responce and power on tap nearly all the time.

Yes samthing is on the paper I am reading. the higher rev is a drawback the engine will wear quicker then the others which might mean more time in the shop than on the street. On the road in straights yes it will give you the fun you seek, but on track it just has too much understeer, that alone will counter the power production in corners meaning more breaking thus slower track times.

The lump in the hood isn't that good looking. BMW should have just raised the height a few cm that way a smooth hood could have fit. Aside from that, this car is great looking.

I think this is probably the best looking BMW in years. Previous S3 and S5 BMWs are so damn ugly, nothing like their 80's or 90's cars. For me, BMW is back on track.

In fact, the only car that scores "below average" in reliabilty is the A8. They also say that the least dependable german car is the 7-series. The 6-series also scores below average. I still say the 2002+ 7 series is an ugly style. This one's a little better, but not much. I bet this thing is going to be a real gas-guzzler; probably 12-14 mpg. It's a shame. My 03' M3 is actually pretty good on fuel economy, about 23-24 mpg. By the way, 7035096285 probably owns a 1991 Honda Civic with 200,000 miles on the engine.
