Even though they were under the law, they still did not have a merit system salvation in the old testament. That is a common misunderstanding. They were still saved by grace in the old testament as Paul alluded to in Romans when he talked about the righteousness of Abraham. Yes, merits was emphasized, but its still the grace of Jesus that saves them.
In the New King James version of the Bible it clearly states: Ephesians 2:8-9 "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." Pretty clear here, you don't offer up to God money or your good works for the GIFT of his Son ! Among others, Catholics don't even know that this simple scripture exists in the Bible. So sad...
