What if he fired it backwards because he didn't take the time to look what he was doing? Besides, it isn't like he hadn't the time.

Not quite. There is ALWAYS the chance that the impact and explosion of the AT-4 will not incapacitate/kill the targets being fired at.
What it WILL do more often than not is scare the SHIT out of the enemy and confuse them/disorient them, while destroying their cover.
While theyre trying to regain their bearings, a hail of bullets will help immensely in taking them out for what they have left.
