i'll never forget this game. my mother told me to get out of the car cuz it was over. i was 7 years old and i told her no......mom they are gonna block it. well we all know what happened. and if you dont think alabama football isnt taught from childhood i tell ya it is.
13 times these two teams have met dating back to 1959. Mostly low scoring games, and Alabama has a clear edge on the series (8-5). But 9 of the 13 matches were upsets...
That was my first PSU game. I was 16 yrs. old. I remember how eerie the feeling was in the stadium after the kick was blocked. 75,000 fans standing in utter shock, and the 10,000 or so Alabama fans in their corner screaming. You can hear the low buzz of confusion in the audio which is exactly how I remember the day. Prior to that blocked kick, it was pure Joe Paterno football as Blair Thomas ran 12 straight up the middle runs for over 50 yards. It was surreal.... Go State, Beat the Tide!
@G4TVFANATIC...not that I have to prove anything to you...but rest assured that he is. Either way....Bama is is going to kick Penn States ass again this year!....Roll Tide!
I remember when the Bear and old Joe met for the national Championship , Bama stopped Penn St at the goal line for the title , and in 2009 Alabama stopped everybody for the National championship 14-0 Roll Tide
Yeah but what coach had the most national chapionships, thats right Bear Bryant . He won six in all, now what other coach has done that !!!!Two repeat years 1964,65 , and 1978,79 .
Are you sure it was 1990? I was at the 89 game in Birmingham...Derrick Thomas sacked Tony Sacca and we won 12-9 or something? Can't remember for certain...doesn't matter...RTR!
I didn't forget. Penn State wore our ass out 9-0.....and the game was MUCH worse than the score. Most miserable I have ever been watching Alabama football....
i only pull against psu when they play bama. these two programs say it all with their never change, no nonsense smack you in the mouth football uniforms. no fancy designs. just plain and traditional. Roll Tide but have respect for the lions!!!
If we can go in and beat Alabama in their house next year it will be huge for every aspect of the program. However, I think we'll beat them in 2011 in route to becoming the national champs. Paul Jones will be our quarterback.

i love it penn state sucks joe pa needs to retire im a notre dame fan you guys are the one with the beer not us remember your rated number one for that
You're the one with an underachieving morbidly obese coach. We're rated number one student section. Don't give me that touchdown Jesus stuff. God hates Notre Dame.
Yea, thats why they have the winningest coach in all college football and one of the best programs. Ain't that why they call it Linebacker U. When's the last time an SEC team actually played up North. Vanderbilt got punked by Michigan. I see why they stay down South.
Oh please you dont want to go there with me. Why? cause i been around long enough to remember things that you clearly dont. before they joined the big ten in "92-93 they were independents and nobody, and i mean nobody played a bigger pussy schedule than penn state. So basically jopa ran up his win totals beating teams like cincy, Brown, william and mary, ect. And to be honest with you even today i'm not even remotely impressed with his big 10 schedule but it s a little better than 20 years ago
SEC was a joke back in the 60's and 70's, that conference didnt come into its own until the late 80's-90's so im not impressed with their record against these teams from 45 years ago, go try to blow that smoke up someone else's ass
You're dumber than dirt if you think that. Auburn won the national title in 1957, LSU in 1958, Ole Miss won shares of titles in 1959-60-62, Bama in 61-64-65, and an unbeaten Bama was robbed in 1966. From 1961-1972, there were at least 2 - and usually 3 - SEC teams out of 10 in the TOP TEN. 1968 was the only exception. Now your argument for the 1970s is a little stronger except you should note team after team went up there.
I'm a Bama fan, and I agree with you: Penn State is one of those schools like Tennessee, USC, Miami, Florida, Alabama, and a few - very few - others that will play anybody, anywhere, any time. Texas does, so does Florida State. But most won't.
Not sure how the game will go this year. Bama might run away with this one considering but I don't know. Penn State does very well against the SEC. May the best team win. I'm a Big Ten guy so u know who I'm rooting for. And whats this about OSU fans are the worst we give props when its due. And stop slamming on Michigan they own the SEC. I say that humbly though.
@megaladon1926 You are the first big 10 guy i have ever heard say something humbly... I admire that!!! Now with that said..... Roll Tide!!!! Its gonna be ugly and quick for that freshman QB state has!!! eeeeeewwwwweeeee!!!
Oh I see. So Vanderbilt - the annual worst team in the SEC - gets beat by Michigan, the winningest program ever - and this proves your case? And that Michigan team was a two-loss team playing a 4-8 team at home. I guess using YOUR logic, Division I-AA is better than the Big Ten, right? I mean, didn't App State beat Michigan at home? Didn't Toledo beat Michigan? If that's the kind of isolated data you want, fine.
It is funny how common THIS objection is brought up by Big Ten partisans. Ohio State fans are the worst. I guess they think if an SEC team played in the Horseshoe in November it would somehow make them something less than 0 for the SEC, right? Go check out Michigan's ROAD record against DECENT teams in September - it's TERRIBLE.
When was the last time PRIOR to Ohio State getting that phantom pass interference call that a Big Ten team won a CONSENSUS national title? 1968. So give us all a breatk from your stupidity.
I was a freshman in the student section happy as hell. We were like"PSU got this!" We weren't even looking cause we were cheering so much. Then we heard the crowd, turned our heads and they fuckin blocked it. That was so depressing.
What a great game between two class acts! I like Penn State, but as a Georgia fan I remember pulling hard for Bama in this one......I imagine most boys from Virginia to Texas felt the same! Still, I hate to ee Joe lose like this.
i grew up in oklahoma and an OU fan but i went to Alabama '87 - '91 so i got in on the last of what i think was a 6-game home-and-home series. don't let this one game fool you, penn st. had their share of success, including in tuscaloosa. i think the games were split 50:50. alabama fans treated the penn st. fans with nothing but respect while they were in t-town and reported receiving the same when they traveled up there. classy rivalry. getting rarer all the time.
I think Alabama won this 10 game home& home 6-4. Should have won 7 if we had't been robbed up there in '83. Please feel free to correct me if am wrong. Playing PSU is great. Wish you guys would win them all excecpt when you play the Crimson Tide!
yeah, and we WERE robbed. preston gothard had his foot in bounds when he caught the game winning TD but the refs called him out. would have been the biggest comeback in bama history because we were down 34-0. i remember seeing shirts at school, Penn State 34, Alabama 28, Refs 7
I'm a Bama fan who has always liked and respected the old rival Penn State.Unlike a lot of old/new rivals I never dislike them. This game was when I was in high school and I was hoping we was heading to a national championship....damn you Auburn LOL Oh well we got the championship two years later LOL
I miss the Alabama-Penn State rivalry that was a regular feature back when PSU was independant. But I heard that it's going to be revived in 2010. Can't wait.
Look at the 1992 Alabama defense it's considered to be the BEST college football defense to this very day.But I dont hate Penn State...Also look at George Teague he run Lamar Thomas down and took the ball away from him,but it was called offside on Bama but the very next play G.T. intercepts it and runs it back for a T.D.
Teague's interception in that game came before the strip...but anyways, yeah, Penn St. is a classy program, and I hope Bama ends up playing them again sometime soon. Bill Curry had an excellent team that year. Bama was in contention for a national championship until Auburn beat them 30-20. It essentially cost Curry his job.
Alabama and Penn State play again in 2010. It's good to see Penn State renew its old rivalries. The only one that Penn State's kept up regularly has been with Temple, and it's been a one-sided affair since 1941.
The 1992 Alabama Crimson Tide was scary good with the way it dismantled a cocky Miami team the same way Penn State did a few years before. I think the Sugar Bowl is what humbled the Hurricanes from there on out. I think that a matchup between 1994 Penn State and 1992 Alabama would have been one hell of a game (if it was possible). It'd have likely either ended in a tie or Penn State winning on a last second Hail Mary for the tiebreaker.
This rival is proof that expansion in conferences is a bad thing. Penn St. was way better as an Independent. With the S.E.C. a bigger conference , Alabama was a better team. (Yes I know they won in 1992, when it was 12 team conference, it's first year also) Bring PSU VS. BAMA' rival back
We were in State College last weekend for the Penn State - Ohio State game. I happened to be wearing my Alabama cap. Someone at the tailgate walked over and told me that my cap was killing him. Turns out that he was the center who snapped the ball on the field goal attempt. Very classy guy. PSU has always been my 2nd favorite team after the Tide. We cannot wait till the series is revived. Don't forget that an Alabama - Penn State matchup could happen around bowl time THIS year...RTR
I remember this because were were watching it and listening to the Radio call(Eli Gold) and there was a TV delay so we heard ELI start screaming that it was blocked before he even kicked it.
I'm a Bama grad and long time fan but I have always respected Joe P and the Lions, had hoped that Joe would come to Bama in times past! I liked Curry, look at the Ky team he built that has grown up now! There are coaches then there are "class" coaches. Joe you are still a class act!
I was at the game and ready to celebrate our victory over Bama. What a heartbreak! Anyways, if we're going to lose, I'd rather it be to Bama than anyone else!
I remember that Thomas Rayam was a reserve who didn't play much. However, they put him in to try to block the kick because he was so tall. As it turned out, the Alabama coaching staff made a great decision!
This was something special. But we really need another crack at Penn St. after that miserable offensive performance (and the Lion's great defensive game) in 1990 losing 0-9.
I was singing for a wedding about 10 minutes after this happened. I was JUST in time to get into the choir loft at the church. My roommate at the time had jumped up and knocked the he** out of the TV in the hotel room to turn it off because he thought Blair Thomas had scored a TD on the play immediately preceeding the block. I can still remember the feeling I had getting in the car and saying, "By the way, Alabama won!" LOL. One of my favorite Bama memories.
wow ur pretty dumb, penn state would have to play 2 games to make it 10-5, try studying up on basic addition stupid, btw with connor and the penn state defence alabama wouldnt stand a chance
yes, play two games. like dgk55 said, bama and penn state are set to play in 2010 and 2011. thats 2, count them, 2 games. theres your basic addition champ.
I turned twenty on the day of this game. I was told Alabama had lost. Imagine my shock the next day when I read in the paper the Tide had pulled it out.
I was there, along with about 8,000 other Tide fans. We were yelling and screaming for about 5 minutes, then we turned around and there wasn't anyone else in the stadium. Happy Valley wasn't Happy that day!!!
i'll never forget this game. my mother told me to get out of the car cuz it was over. i was 7 years old and i told her no......mom they are gonna block it. well we all know what happened. and if you dont think alabama football isnt taught from childhood i tell ya it is.

This rival is proof that expansion in conferences is a bad thing. Penn St. was way better as an Independent. With the S.E.C. a bigger conference , Alabama was a better team. (Yes I know they won in 1992, when it was 12 team conference, it's first year also) Bring PSU VS. BAMA' rival back
BLUE VS. RED/ NORTH VS. SOUTH = great football

REEEEJECTION!!!

Bill Curry was the only coach (at that time) to defeat coach Pa 3 years in a row.
