Yep, it's Tom Selleck. A fitting choice since back in 1980-81 he barely missed out on landing the part of Indiana Jones (he was George Lucas' first choice). So like the 80-81 Chargers, he was THIS close...
(CTD) I watched those playoff games and most of the picks were not Fouts' fault. In the Oilers game, two were bobbled by receivers, a third was deflected by a d-lineman and a fourth was a desperation throw in the waning seconds. In the Oakland game John Jefferson dropped two passes in the end zone, a third that would have been a TD if he hadn't bobbled it, and he bobbled another that got picked. The Bengals game was a clusterfuck because of high winds.
@Jelperman Another thing to consider: The Oilers had the Chargers' hand-signal system figured out, thanks to advanced scouting. If the Chargers had sent a man into the huddle with the play, as every other NFL team did at that time, the Chargers probably destroy the Oilers and go on to win the Super Bowl. I say "probably" because the Bolts did beat BOTH Super Bowl teams that season. But...the Oilers knew what was coming on just about every offensive play for SD.
@SDChargersForever I think that's overhyped. The Oilers got extremely lucky: scoring on a fluke TD pass, and PWNing the Chargers on special teams (blocked FG) and thanks to a bonehead penalty on a Houston FG, the Oilers got a 1st and goal and cashed in. Besides, the Oilers were in the conference championship game two years in a row so it's not like losing to them was any kind of upset.
@Jelperman I hate to take issue with somebody who may be a fellow Bolts fan, but how can you possibly say the Oilers' knowledge of the Chargers play-calling was overhyped??? It was the reason the Oilers won the game! The Oilers picked off Fouts FIVE times -- because they knew what was coming each play. And to say the Chargers losing wasn't an upset? The Oilers played that game without their best offensive players! Pastorini, Burrough and Campbell were all injured. It was a huge upset.
@SDChargersForever (ctd) Most importantly, the Oilers were a major match-up problem for the Chargers. The Oilers were great at power running even without Earl Campbell. Pastorini wasn't exactly irreplaceable and Oilers didn't throw much, anyway. The Chargers defense had a hard time against power running teams (which is why they lost to the Raiders the following season in the conference championship).
@SDChargersForever Two of the picks were balls that hit the receiver in the hands and bounced off. A third was a desperation throw and a fourth was batted at the line of scrimmage. Now how does spying help with these plays? Did the Oilers know JJ and Bob Klein were going to bobble the passes? Did they know where a deflected ball would ricochet? Because unless they did know these things, their spying didn't mean diddly poo, as Jim Mora would say.
@Jelperman I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. The Oilers own coaching staff admitted to what they had done. Again: Oilers' coaches admitted that they knew the Chargers' offensive plays before each snap. I don't know how anybody could not think that's a HUGE advantage. And your attempt to downplay the loss of Houston's 3 most critical offensive players seems a bit deluded. Everybody except you knows it was a huge upset (Google it), but you're certainly entitled to your opinion.
I was at that game. The Chargers were just "off" offensively the entire game. Except for their two scoring drives they just weren't hitting on all cylinders. After the game the entire crowd was absolutely stunned, and to this day it is the worst loss in Chargers' history. They were easily the best team in the league in '79; they beat the two SB teams 35-7 (the worst loss the Steel Curtain ever had) and 40-16 (they just toyed with the rams). I'll never forget it.
And if you think it's only my opinion, go to Google and type in "Oilers Chargers upset" (no dates or anything else needed) and look at all the returns specifically about that game. It's considered one of the biggest upsets in NFL divisional round history.
Lots of people might think it was some great upset at the time, but in retrospect it really wasn't. The Oilers were a game away from the SB the year before, had just won a playoff game against Denver (a team that had split games with the Chargers -and only narrowly lost the second one). The team had playoff experience on the road (trouncing an outstanding Pats team in N.E. the year before) and the Chargers were playoff virgins. See my next post...
DEFINITELY the most underrated!! Fouts only ever dropped back about 3 feet, but his release was SO quick he didn't take many sacks, and the TD pass was usually completed before the defense crossed the line of scrimmage!! Dan had the most poise I've ever seen in a quarterback!!
@markmustb1 You sure about that? His QB rating was 80.2, he completed less than 59% of his passes, he only won 2 more games than he lost and he only threw 12 more TD's than Int's.what's worse is his postseason record.all the hype that swirled around Fouts, it resulted in just 4 playoff seasons and 3 total playoff victories. He threw 12 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in his 7 playoff games, including two 5-interception games. His playoff QB rating was 70.0, a full 10 pts below his reg.season mark.
While QBs can certainly lose games by themselves, they don't win games -teams do. This isn't baseball, where a pitcher can win a game single-handed, so QB won/lost records are pretty moronic. The playoff losses were mostly due to the team giving up an average of 27 points a game and being ineffective against the run, which kept Fouts off the field and forced him to throw constantly into defenses who were ready and waiting. (CTD)
you people are idiots...Rivers cant be compared to fouts because , well times have changed!! there are more Ego's now and it harder to be a leader than it was when Fouts was QB. Just because you dont see Rivers mouthing off to his players doesnt mean he's less of a leader!! ...Rivers is carrying the chargers now, even with all the injuries to the team...now thats a leader.
Many people compare Fouts and Rivers, but this can not be done. Fouts was a true leader and the whole team followed him unlike Rivers who, alot of the time, acts like a punk. He needs to man up and lead the team like Fouts did, then maybe they can win a super bowl.
Last night game marked the 10th fourth quarter comeback engineered by Rivers. with constant pressure in his face and not alot of time left He lead an 80yard drive followed by Sproles TD to close the game with a W. You dont call that leadership. Philip is not afraid to show his emotion in the game just like Fouts.

As a life time Raiders fan, I really liked Dan Fouts during his playing days. Well; that is except when he would play us. I hated him for at least those four quarters. And a few more days after that when he beat us. But Fouts was the man! And I respected him. Some of us Raiders fans wished he was on our team. Especially during the Marc Wilson era.
Without a doubt one of the best QB's EVER. I also have no doubts that if Fouts would have stayed healthy and kept on playing, he would have sat at the top of the QB heap for total yards, TD's, & completions/etc. He deserved to win a superbowl.
Fouts was tutored by John Unitas during Unitas' stay in SD in 1973, and there was some similarity to their playing and leadership styles. Fouts was a great QB. He deserved a SB ring.
Some people ay remember that Dan Fouts learned NFL quarterbacking from thelikes of John Brodie when his father broadcasted 49ers games and Johnny Unitas when Fouts was a rookie and Unitas finished his career in San Diego.
