• ch'o ho is

just a lackey of china

• He gave his life in this terrible and painful manner for something he believed in. Unbelievable. He had more balls than most.

• I would never do this but all I can say is I would be drunk as fuck if I did.

• Imagine believing in something so strongly! Most people would sacrifice what they cherrish most to avoid this fate.. This man is the highest level of human being...I am thankful for his teaching...

• how many of you nay-sayers actually dare to set yourself on fire and remain calm at the same time ??

• Crispy Đức to his friends.

• they music really captures what this monk was trying to do. which of course must have been to start a mosh pit. way to honor his sacrifice.

• @kyjodo Rage Against The Machine's self-titled album. Oblivious.

• That's absolutely correct information Saigon.Former Intelligent Agent MR Trân Trung Quân had mention that

• My Grandfather killed himself like this too. I heard from my mom told me all the story of him, Its SAD!

• Indeed. They were being slaughtered needlessly and this was his way of saying "enough is enough".

• the monk that was on fire looks like a teenager. RIP

• That makes sense.

• While I can't say that I like the music, I've always admired someone who's ready and willing to die for his/her beliefs.

• - Im not a fan of that particular song either but was probaby picked due to Zack De La Rocha's strong belief in human rights and freedom of choice. When He and his band released their first self titled album he used this photo as the cover. (The Band Is "Rage Against The Machine" -- Just in case some people are wondering)

• @Seattlecarnut As long as they don't think it's okay to drag others with them, then yes. This was one of the admirable suicides.

• I totally agree. No one should be forced into a situation like this against their will. There are other ways of protesting the govt without violence and without death.

• i agree that violence and death shood be only used once all else has failed...but this was the last resort...these monks were being slaughtered, tortured and repressed and it wasn't even known because media wasnt alowed in vietnam whilst this was going on...this man burnt himself alive without a whimper through desperation...knowing if jus one photo got out finally the world wood have to wake up...

• @Seattlecarnut this is far more effective tho - message was heard worldwide! amazing monk...no words for that

• He didn't die for communism. He sacrificed himself to fight for religious freedom denied to Buddhists by the Catholic Diem regime.

• please read the book call TRAN^` TRUNG QUAN^ NAM(` TRONG LONG` DICH.

• Not many people know that he was inject poison and killed before he was burn. His body not moving during the fire begin. please read the book call TRAN^` TRUNG QUAN^ MA(M` TRONG LONG DICH. which i have read it 22 years ago when i was a 14 yr of age. You all will open your eyes and ears to see and know what VIETNAMESE COMMUNIST all about.

• weifong that's not true. he was alive when he was burning as HE was the one who lit the match and consumed himself in flames. he wasn't moving because of his sheer will power. Don't spread lies about this benevolent man.

• i'm a buddishism believer too. please find and read the book call TRAN^` TRUNG QUAN^ NAM(` TRONG LONG` DICH. you will find alot of new things about Vietnamese communist and Vietnamese Democrate. i have watch the video of that incident,a young man light up the fire and burn him( the monk). that's why i beleive what the book tell the true.the VC used the religion to fight against Diem's regime.

• don't believe everything you read. Read the reports from the reporters who actually saw the event. They all said he lit his own match and he drove to his immolation site

• you ask me to READ the report? why don't you ask me to watch the video instead of reading it !!!!!! watch it so you can SEE and HEAR too !!! READING only appear in your "HEAD" what you imagine from the words in the article. SEE and HEAR is helping you witness what was really happen !!!! hope you are clear and getting the out the round about that you are circulating !! good luck on your itinerary of finding out the true!! can you handle the true that you didn't believe for so long? hihi...

• By the way when you mention the word READ , that mean you have read the article not actually watch the video clip of that incident right? of course you were not if you have watch it you you HAVE TO or MUST agree with me. hope you spend some of your precious time to find out the true. it will be interesting to you.

• there were several articles, a video which is debated whether it is fake, which depicts the same thing that all reporters reported. he arrived by himself of free will and lit his own match. you tell me to a read a vietnamese book which obviously is not a factual report, but another side of the story. i'm talking about factual reports that say that he said he is doing from his own free will

• the video was true, his associate light up the fire at the back gas trail that many people don't see it from the video clip. mango watch closely when the monk fall down after a few minutes of burning, you watch closely that his leg stay up as he still sitting on the floor (see it? watch all the video clip) his boby was die hard already. that's factual evidence

• well he died in a few minutes because the fire killed him. he definitely didin't die a day before, as you previously commented on the video, one of the reasons why that video is in controversy is because it is from the movie mondo cane 2, which is a shock factor movie, also, all reports who HAVE to report the truth and didn't lie in favor of communism because vietnam was a republic at the time, say that he lit his own match and was engulfed instantly, unlike the video.also, you can see him

• count beads and recite "mindfulness of buddha" before he is immolated. So the video shows him conscious and meditating, as someone else lights the gas trail (maybe not, it is cut out in the video as someone gets in the way) However, all reporters (including nonbiased american) say that this is NOT true, and a claim by DIEM to attack his communist political rivals. so i believe that this book is actually written by a diem supporter, and not fact.

• there was a teenager whose parent were innocent execute by HOCHIMINH (Evil of course) during CAI~ CACH' RUONG DAT^'. then fled to the South Vietnam and he join a special force and recuit by CIA.he was a special agent. he airborned back to the North VN and he was organise to work in the North regime.he reported independently point of view what really happened to the Monk back to the CENTRAL AGENT.he wrote in his dairy which is the book i mentioned.he settles in Cadana 20yr ago, still alive?unknown

• also if you believe in thich quang duc, as i do, i believe he is a very VERY strong person and i don't believe he could've have been so easily manipulated and controlled by the communists. Time and time again we are reminded of their wisdom, so that is why, my faith in him and the buddhists makes me SURE that he was not drugged, or forced to commit this act.

• rage against the machine? nice

didnt they use a zoomed in ver of this pic

for an album cover?

• yeah they did for 92s s/t album

• Single cover I think.

• difference is he killed himself and not civilians like jihadists

• @GuysSeriously He was most likely drugged with opium, the poor man murdered, do not be a fool...

• @GuysSeriously i think the Jihadists are now just doing what the Crusaders did back in 1100, the christians killed many muslims in the name of God, a holy war wich still continues in 2010, only, it's the muslims now who do the killing, but we where just as bad, maybe worse.

• @DaZeDmerlin we? i wasnt around during the crusades and i somehow doubt you weren't either. i resent being grouped in the same group as the crusaders

• @RatJar142 You're right, and i'm not even religious, so "we" was out of place, i was raised to be a christian though, but somehow that didn't turn out so well.Anyways, that doesn't mean christians are crusaders, so let me refrase that to "the christians, -and to be more precise- the christian crusaders".Extremist Muslims are like little schoolgirls compared to the crusaders, they could teach them a thing or two.

And tis is all waaaay offtopic too btw. :)

• @GuysSeriously jihad means to strive to strugle what? blowing your self up, in what way is that to strive to strugle?

• @GuysSeriously tell this to the NATO bomb are dropped on the civilian ,

• @gsaxita

NATO kill stupid and murderous lackeys of murderous and corrupt dictators

• Long Live The Great Communism !!!

Death to the fascism, capitalism and racism !!!

• How long time did it tok for him to die???

• ok xd

• it doesn't matter id its a monk or soldier, its a human LIVING bin.

• he is reincarnated Boddhisattva monk. I am sure there are many monks who has already achieved to Arhats in real life

• Unbelievably brave. He's Vietnamese.

• those monk set there self on fire coz all they want is freedom and peace they meditate there self b4 they do this thing they separate there spirit to there body so that they dont feel the pain at least they rest in peace

• people who call suicide the easy way out are stupid as hell, if it were the easy way out everyone would be doing it LOL how many brave people are there truly in the world.

Thích Quảng Đức was a master of himself.

• very powerfull picture!!!

• youre a doofus for not understanding

• slave mentality.

• This picture gives me the chills. I am totally speechless.

I wish to one day experience the kind of inner peace and enormous strength meditation offered this monk to have.

• Altruism and self-sacrifice for the greater good is a beautiful thing, but I still feel very conflicted about this image.....

• Ngo Dinh Diem was the asiatic Ante Pavelic (Croatia NDH) and his brother cardinal Thuc was the asiatic Stepinac.

• its amazing how he could put aside his pain for their others and his own believes. A role model in my eyes. (not the burning, His mentality)

• Ive seen some extreme pictures on the internetbut this is just crazy I cant believe he did this to his self.

• wait, wait: was this for political or religious reasons? ive heard both were true

• somewhat both, i think

• i know that it was a protest because of the government, but after lookint it up i got that it was because of the relations between the governtment and the budists

• TehKGBeast:

You didn't even mention the arguments I gave you.

I say that if you believe the Bible, then logically you should also believe that this monk would go to the Hell that you believe in. You say that God would forgive him, even though he broke the first commandment. It depends how much of a fundimentalist Christian you are. If you are NOT a fundie, then maybe there is room for you to believe God would be forgiving.

• I would almost say that Martyr is a better word than suicide. Both for what this man did and what he represented. What you want to believe about this mans actions, according to your interpretation of the bible is just that. Your interpretation. I think a lot of us miss the real meaning about what this monk did in assuming it was plain suicide. I'm Christian, I don't claim to know all the answers. I accept other religions for what they believe. It's all about prespective isn't it?

• So, messirebuckethead, not withstanding your affectations with words containing the perfix...buck...how do you suggest we reconcile the two aforementioned biblical principles? A sin to kill yourself VERSUS he killed himself for peace...gee...sounds like a pretty solid dude. Lets see you weasle your way outta that one. Squirm lil'doggie...SQUIRM!

• First of all, you have to actually reply to me so I can be notified of your reply... geez.

That's why I don't listen to the Bible, man. The bible actively claims that what this man did was wrong. What do you think? There is no "reconciliation".

He purposefully killed himself. There's a difference because 'laying down your life' is more like taking a bullet for someone, or actively saving someone's life. This monk did it purely to make a statement. That's why it's called a protest.

• Firstly, I did reply, but for some reason youtube just likes to put my reply as just another post. Secondly, why are you differentiating between protests, and "laying down your life...?" It's of no purpose because both of them can be considered suicide, which is obvious. Thirdly, of course I realize that you were replying to clarkent69, because your post was clearly indented, and below his post.

• I appreciate your open mindedness. There is a priest that I have had conversations with often who is quite liberal, and I would hope that there is a general trend towards Christianity redefining itself into a more inclusive model. I have noticed the same problem with my replies by the way. I think it is related to browser version. Cheers.

• clarkent69:

I was basically criticizing the bible because it says that suicide is a sin, even though sometimes suicide can be a positive thing. I'm sorry about this whole ordeal, it was uneccessary, and for that I apologize.

I got after someone (can't even remember who) for saying that this man was holy in christian terms and I basically said that person was saying that to feel better about himself, because he clearly would be sent to hell. And then you disagreed. that's all. =) 1/2

• I think it comes down to the interpretation of the Bible. That's what's caused this misunderstanding. And it's all subjective, you have your set of values and beliefs, and I have mine. It's better that way. I personally believe that if the morals derived from faith are the same as those of an ethical society, personal faith can be a very positive thing.

So if you and I disagree on whether or not this monk would go to the christian Hell, then so be it. We can agree to disagree, i think.

• Thats the first time someone on Youtube has apologized to me, and I appreciate it. I myself fall short of the standard I would have myself live up to, and I think that TQD has been inspirational. Look, 2 cramations...three creamations...whatever. The real deal is that this guy sat there and burned and took it without making a peep. I want you to understand that this is the most inspiring thing I have ever seen. How someone can watch this and NOT be blown away to me is a source of puzzlement.

• it's true. It's very inspiring. I am blown away. I just don't have the religious connection with it I suppose. I don't get the feelings you have because I don't have this already established connection with a higher power. Again, now hot air is just coming out of my head because I really don't have anything more to say.

by the way the band Mooncake is one of my favorite bands, you should check them out. (they do the music on this video)

• Ah...but here's the kicker!! My inspiration is a related, but SEPERATE issue, from what this man means to me. It can be realted byt does not NEED to be. I;m going to checkout Mooncake. Thanks for the heads up. What your fav song by them?

• fair enough my good sir. on that note let's end this conversation.

Novorossiysk 1968 is the best song in the history of the universe... lol

• Fourthly, as I previously said, he is a Buddhist so he has no regard for whether or not he will go to "Hell" because his belief is greatly different from Christian belief. And one can assume that he believes he has achieved nirvana, and therefore can choose whether or not to leave this world and be liberated from his rebirths. I am a Christian, but I accept what others believe as their own beliefs, and respect them for what they might have done.

• I think your point of view is hard to pin down, both religiously and philosophically. You made reference to the concept of sin, and now are saying that you dont believe in the bible. I dont believe that you can make both statements in a coherent fashion. Also, I find your criteria for 'laying down your life' to be narrow. My definition would be the giving up one's life with the INTENTION that the act benefit others in some way, which is broader and more comprehensive than yours.

• The miracle is that we are capable of such self-discipline. I am not a bible scholar, but did Jesus not say that for a man to lay down his life for his brother is the greatest love of all? Why are you beefin on me man? Im trying to say we should all be cool with one and other, and your laying in to me. I left organized Christianity because they JUST. COULD. NOT. BE. COOL with someone else's beliefs, even if that person demonstrated exceptional moral character. Help me come back!

• Christain or Buddhist, we all have a duty to consider this man and what his meaning. I believe that we have untold potential. This man sat there and BURNED and did not so much as FLINCH!! If that's not a miracle...what is??? If his heart survuving 3...yes THREE creamations is not amiracle...what is? I love this man. How could God not smile at this man, who has shown us the best of our nature? Who cares what religion he was. Does the bible not say 'we shall KNOW them by their acts'?

• the bible also says it's a sin to kill yourself, bucko.

He was burned alive, and then only recremated once. So TWO cremations. It's also true that much of his body remained in tact, including his liver, skeleton, and large intestine.

Sitting still whilst burning is simply a sign of self-discipline. Buddhism essentially states that life is suffering, and buddhists try to detach from the self. This monk was prepared for death. He was enlightened.

Do a bit more research next time.

• Considering he is a Buddhist, and not a Christian, he may not have necessarily believed that suicide is a sin. But regardless of that, the reason he did this for everyone else's religious freedom I think would be enough for God to forgive him, regardless that he does not worship our God, let alone a God. Along with doing research, maybe you should put some more thought into this.

• I hope you realize that I was replying to clarkent69...

I'm assuming that YOU are a christian.

I disagree, man. Christians like you just don't want to say that a man as heroic as this man will go to hell, which, if you believe the bible, is the only logical conclusion

think:

He obviously would have known what christianity was, and still denied it. (sin)

he killed himself (sin)

but I don't care, because I'm not a christian.

• hehehehe...... lol... That's the special part. Wanting to do it.

• YOU BEASTED HIM..

• You could probably do it even better!!

• AHAHAHAHA

• So as MAD1093 said that it was stupid, it's very smart to get your message across. But it is also a sin and should not be done. But hey, its 2009 and im a catholic looking up this video. I wouldnt even have know if it wasnt so violent. So i dont really know what to say. He is brave but also sinning. Suicide is a sin. I hope I have said this respectfully. Thank you.

• typical catholic approach..u think so highly of urselves..."if u dont believe in MY god u'll burn in hell"...i kinda find it hypocritic. "all loving God"? pleaz. if God luvs everyone y is dat catholics fuckd everythin up with the Inquisition n Crusades? n now u guys r discriminatin on gays

• Listen, Im a very devout Catholic as well. What I have a hard time understanding, even from what you've said, why 'Book-Thumpers' frown so greatly on this.

This man sacrificed HIMSELF to save the lives and wellbeing of hundreds, if not thousands of Monks. How can you say that is any different than what Jesus did?

Stop trying to push things that you don't even fully understand.

• i am watching this as a christian. Actually a catholic. I know the catholics were the ones wronging the people, but even as a non buddhist, i have to say this man is probably one of the bravest men i have ever seen. But setting yourself on fire, while very public, (and im sure he got his message across) doesn't achieve anything. To kill yourself means that you dont have faith in God to take care of you. You are throwing away your most precious gift.

• God? Do you think everybody believes in 'God'? I'm a pluralist. Not an exclusivist! I think God UNDERSTAND us, because he/she looks on the earth and see what humans can do with humans. But perhaps 'God' has left us a long time ago. I'm not a Christian. I try to believe in the humans! I think that is harder as the belief in God, because humans can be cruel and so on. Think about it.

• @EZLNCombatant No one cares...

• Thích Quảng Đức showed the world spirit is stronger than flesh. That resistance by one can impact worldwide...

• mad 1093,you fucking wanker this priest has more about him than you ever will, thats because you are a cunt, this man will go hand in hand with his god ,you on the other hand will walk in shit you cocksucking fuck,

• Comment removed

• What is so brave and honorable about suicide. It's pretty pathetic. People like this do not deserve sympathy. I don't care how much you believe in something, setting yourself on fire is fucking dumb and achieves nothing.

• Yeah um know. You are the one that is dumb if you don't understand this. People sacrifice them selves for others ALL the time. How many people during the inquisition didn't deny their gods, who were then tortured and or killed. Is that not also suicide? People who commit suicide to escape their lives are pathetic. You wish for even a moment you had the kind of love for your people that this guy had. He gave up his own life so that his people would have a real life and you call him pathetic?

• Hey idiot, he isn't doing it for sympathy. Sympathy is when you try to commit suicide for attention on your self. He committed suicide for attention to the entire Buddhist people and should for ever be honored as someone who has more guts then most of the pussified people on this forsaken piece of dirt.

• FUCK U

• what a crappy song.

• now im catholic and i love my faith but his is a brave and honourable man

• Thích Quảng Đức, victim of catholic opression

• Is that a song of Rage Against The Machine? Because ik reconigze the voice of Zack de La Rocha

• It is not from Rage Against The Machine. But it is from Zack de La Rocha^^

• ah ok can you give me the title of this song?

• "We Want it All!" You can find it on the soundtrack of "Fahrenheit 9/11"

• THX alot :D!

para todos todo, para nosotros nada ;)

• No problem, my comrade ;)

• Lie! Lie! Lie! I'm Vietnamese and I say this is BIG LIE STORY. IT'S BULLSHIT

• so?

it doesn't matter if your Vietnamese, that doesn't make everything you say right.

anyways, theres a whole lotta proof this happend

• Are fucking kidding me. You are full of bullshit buddy.

• A thousand prostrations before Quan Duc would not be enough. He convicted the West with the courage of the Buddha.

Nam Myoho Renge Kyo

• some beg to differ!

Good upload!

Mexika Tiahui!

• Thích Quảng Đức OM SHANTI OM SHANTI OM SHANTI OM SHANTI OM SHANTI OM SHANTI Om Shanti Hê Buddha ! Hê Kêshava ! HARI OM respect of peace
• The greatest travesty is that I see no marshmellows.

Smores are the bomb son.

• amazing

• Is the highest sacrifice that can only be done by brave and honest people, that after not being heard by the powerful, they take that painful choise. They are marthirs of the human selfishness and desperation.

• I could not agree with you more! The Vietnamese people, imbued with the best of the Buddhist, Hindu and Christian traditions, are a courageous and gentle people. Ho Chi Minh was the embodiment of those virtues.

• A guy just did the same in México, ´cause the Governor from Veracruz State did not receive him to talk about his land problems.

• I think it is the highest form of peaceful protest...we should NEVER forget these people, who fought with peaceful appliances against the power of oppression. I hope the death of these people were not unavailingly! 142 days after Thích Quảng Đức death, the goverment of South Vietnam break down under a putsch. The system was not change in a better one, but it shows how powerful his protest was.

• There's a big difference between this act and the one you mention.

The difference between suicide and martyrdom is that one done for personal grievances, the other for social causes.

The Buddhist monk, who possessed nothing--least of all "land", set himself on fire to protest against the Theu regime and the continued occupation of Vietnam by U.S. forces.

• That's not true. He did not do this out of protest against the occupation of Vietnam. He did it to oppose Diem who prevented Buddhists the same rights as Catholics. He prevented them from flying the Buddhist flag on the Buddha's birthday.

• it was the ultimate sacrifice for his beliefs

• we will never forget.
