@fipsfoxy I think it is made of circles glue together. Every layer is made of 5-10 circles of paper and the piece has a central axel. This is how i think it is made.
it seems u can do everething from paper! i mean u can use it somewhere to make ur life easy and beautiful! and it needs only paper, fantasy and time! and u had all this! so u can make everething!
I assume you ment "spend". Actually not really, I just go to walmart and get the 150 sheet pack, and that lasts for a while, I've only went through 2.5 packs (a lost of it went to waste from testing and miscalculations). Now one of the projects I've been working on for almost 2 years now which has been printed on 1 sheet of Arch E size paper cost me $50, only to find out I had a slight miscalculation on it.
oh man, and I thought i had an original idea. Any way possible you could upload a video or a some photos (like on flikr) of the chess sets. I would be very interested.
I bet i can make this in 9 months

instead of leaving small slits in them you should push them all together so its more solid and firm

what kind of paper do you use?

It's 110lb card-stock and regular printer paper for the center rod. The card stock is the kind you can find at walmart or any other supply store.
