When I was a little kid in the early 70's, probably like alot of kids then, I asked my grandmother to lift the top of the porcelain toilet top to let me see if the Ty-D-Bol man was in there....
Some of you can laugh and criticize the ads all you want. They are far better then the mindless CG junk they use today. Advertising is an art and these old ads showed these people that did them worked hard at them and used their imaginations.
I have a carnival ride boat made up to like like the Ty d Bowl mans boat and modified it to put a 3 Hp boat motor on it. I have a hat like his too. I get a lot of laughs on the river during the weekend.
I remember a comedian circa 1980 saying about a little man boating around his toilet "you know what I'd do - I'd flush that little man down my toilet!"
@chipper246 You're right! The Ty-D-Bol man was played by character actor Dan Resin who also played Dr. Beeper in Caddyshack. I heard he passed away last year.
@zzzombie888 Yup - he was one of 2 or 3 different guys who played the Ty-D-Bol man. I liked that scene in "Caddyshack" where he comes out of the water and says to the partying kids "Hey man, save me a toke" and grabs his pager and shocks himself.
The world famous Ty-D-Bowl man has died. As a child, I would always peek under the lid...just hoping...and praying....to actually get a glimpse of the Ty-D-Bol Man, all dressed up in that super clean captain uniform with his handy dandy sail boat and ladder. Actually, a family member of mine had problems getting "potty trained" because the blue water always "freaked" her out. She hated the whole "Ty-D-Bowl" experience.
Fear GOD who hath power to cast you into HELL(Luke 12:5)! Fear God and depart from evil(Proverbs 3:7)! God is ANGRY with the wicked everyday(Psalm 7:11)! The dude's boat should have been brown with yellow upholstery. If he worked in the toilet in a college dorm room, every now and then somebody must have crapped in the tank (a time honored college tradition).
Probably was glass. That was one of their selling points. ' It won't break like other cleaners in glass bottles' And they show the bottle falling on the floor not breaking
LOL! This ad always brings back memories of Carol Burnett flushing him on her sketches in which TV commercials "came to life." Also, the episode of Mary Tyler Moore where they hire Murray's niece to help cue up the ads at the station, and she messes up during the news, so Ted Baxter says "Um, we don't seem to have that ad, so I'll just describe it...a woman goes into her bathroom and hears someone saying 'Hi there!,' so she lifts the toilet tank, and inside there's a little man in a boat..."
There was one version of this where they had introduced a fresh lemon scent, and I remember somone reaching into the toilet tank and taking this little, tiny lemon form the Ty-D-Bowl Man. I was little back then, and I really wondered if that was true. It ranked right up there wth the Scrubbing Bubbles...I really thought there would be an army of bubbles with swirly little scrubbies on their bottoms going across my tub, and I thought Herbal Escence Shampoo really left flowers in your hair.
Hi, Thanks for posting this video. The Tidy Bowl Man was played by my acting coach John Barth. He opened up a school in Philadelphia and taught actors like myself how to break into the business. He was a great man and an ever better teacher. I just uploaded my audition tapes from his school in 1986. Check them out and let me know what you think. Enjoy.
OMG..I had classes with John Barth in PA too. He did the Steak 'um commericals...and taught me a lot about blocking and 'end scene'..I loved and adored him!! :)
Mandi, when did you take his classes. I was there around the late 80's. It was on Chestnut street I think. His wife also helped teach the classes. He did teach me a lot. you can see some of the videos from that class on my site.
I always thought when I was a kid: If he is in that boat and some fat chick sits on the toilet while he is boating.... He is gonna be in for the shock of his life! LOL!
SORRY SOME ONE SENT THIS TO ME AND IT SCARED ME SO I HAD TO DO IT PLZ FORGIVE ME IM NOT TRYING TO ADVERTISE BUT IM SCARED OF WHAT IT SEES in 1908 a lady named sally rusa was in the woods looking for a dog until a ghost came and killed her so if ur reading this u will find a bloody body in your closet hanging there haunting you and will kill you and ur family and if u want to stop this just sends this to 6 videos in 30 mins or this will happen good luck
Actually...you are referring to another commercial. Baggies had a commercial where the strips of the bag...one side was yellow...the other side was blue..when you snapped the strips together..it made green.
when i was about 3 years old i opened a brand new bottle my mom just bought home from the store and dumped it on the carpet.i wanted the little boat,i never found the boat but i did piss my father off.the blue stain was in the carpet till we sold the house, might still be there,my hands were blue for weeks.the dam stuff was had to get out of the bottle to it had some type of plunger or stopper after you removed the cover.
I remember when they came out with a lemon scented one. I was a kid & kept looking at those bottles for the little tiny lemons they showed in the commercials.
He almost looks like Pat Boone. You know when I saw the new Ty-D-Bols that are out right now, I thought the original Ty-D-Bol man was Van Johnson. I'm almost thinking of trying to dress like him and make a light-hearted joke out of it. "Oh, by the way, how do you like the new boat? (laughs out loud)"
Nooooo, that's not John Vernon (who played Dean Wormer in A.H.) Forgot his name, but that's the guy who played the snobby doctor in Caddyshack (who owned the Porsche that gets puked in). If I remembered I think he ran for congress in NJ in the early `80's.

Also, what about that one from the 70s that had that really skinny, tall, kinda scruffy guy wandering around the desert. I think it was for the white pages or something.
I still remember on The Carol Burnett show they did a sketch where she was coming back from the store and as she took the stuff out of her bags it would start talking to her doing commercials for the product. The Ty d bol man was one of them. I think Lyle Wagner played him.
The 70s were so great. What a great decade to grow up as a little kid. Things were so different back then. We weren't paranoid of things killing us, we ate sugary cereal for breakfast, but no kids were fat. Our activities actually involved playing and not sitting in front of the TV with a bowl of chips.
The next time I think my job stinks, I'll remember the actor who was the Ty D Bol Man. I guess it was a living, but, can you imagine having to tell people what you do for a living?
Still, it was a clever gimmick... do they still make Ty D Bol? I think it's been replaced by 2000 Flushes (which, by the way, 2000 Flushes and products like it are very bad for your toilet's plumbing)
This reminds me of when I was four years old in 1971...I stayed at home with my Mom and baby brother, and my "favorite show" was early afternoon reruns of Gomer Pyle..when they changed the tv schedule around & replaced the GP reruns w/a soap (Love of Life), I went into a ballistic, four-year-old fit!
