Stuart's speech here amazes me, the way he talks about not being able to get the devil out and saying "and why should he? He doesn't want to be homeless." I cried to bits because it really pulls together this man's life into a tragic story about a beautiful mind. Stuart Shorter should be recognized by everyone and Tom Hardy deserves all the awards in the world for portraying him so fantastically and doing Stuart justice. Kudos to the both of them.
thank you so much for posting this, it was an amazing story and Tom's versatility as an actor never ceases to amaze me, and Benedict seemed like the perfect person to play that role. (I'd also like to add that I'm a 16 year old girl, just to show that not all girls focus on the actors and not the story seeing as that point has been brought up)
Yes, I'm going to say it, Tom Hardy is extraordinary in this. Pure artistry in his performance; and a beautiful, gut-wrenching, thought-provoking film altogether. Cried like a child at several points I must admit, too :S
I think this book and film serve to show people that homeless people are people. Many of them are intelligent, philosophical people with fascinating stories to tell. They're not just dirty layabouts. If only more people would realise this. Rip Stuart, Alexander obviously loved you and cared for you, I hope you found peace wherever you are.
The thing about Hardy, well, he isn't just some hot guy who gets acting jobs because of his looks he actually has an immense talent. Words cannot describe how gifted Tom really is. Same with Benedict, I absolutely lost it when Alexander started crying in the car while listening to the tape. Acting about telling a story, Tom and Ben did it perfectly. I didn't think about Bane or Sherlock when I was watching this, I thought about Stuart and Alexander and their beautiful friendship. Fantastic film.
Bloody Hell. This is such an amazing film. The cinematography is simple, basic, but it's the most poignant film I have ever seen. The dry wit and the humour from the start (I just couldnt stop laughing at Stuart at the beginning :)) but then the humour abruptly begins to drain away as the film prgresses, and you start to see how much emotional trauma Stuart had suffered through out his life, making the film extremely hard hitting & realistic. Yeah Benedict was good, but Tom Hardy outshined him.
Thiss is a really amazing movie, I told all my friends about it and they all agreed. We always watch it when we are round eachother's houses. Reallly makes you think.
Yes, Benedict and Tom are attractive, but that is not what I take away from this film. The story was very brilliantly told. To tell it as a murder story is quite true. Poor Stuart was put through so much pain and violence at such an early part of his development as a person that a part of him died. Happy he had someone like Alexander who genuinely cared for him and was able to write down and tell others what happened to his friend. Hope Stuart has found some peace wherever he is now.
That was absolutely brilliant. No words can describe how I feel after watching that and the casting of Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch was a stroke of genius.
Its 4;12 am in the morning,After not being able to sleep and staying up most of night browsing youtube randomly I found 'stuart,a life backwards part 1' After watching it I wanted to see the rest and Iv watched all 9 parts,I cant sit here and say Iv had any sort of life like that,But I know personally what its like fighting the demons within you, really hit home this,An absoulute masterpiece.Tom Hardy plays the part brilliant.
Thank you so much for posting this movie - it's amazing and beautifully acted. The story is just... beautiful and painful and wonderful and heartbreaking. Stuart's life is something I'm so glad to know about.
Fantastic movie. I just watched it because I was bored and I knew this had Benedict in it, but this film really did end up touching me. As cheesy as it sounds this movie actually did make me laugh and cry at the same time and I cannot believe how brilliant Tom Hardy was. Amazing film.
I stumbled across this by chance, cant believe id never heard of it before. I was born and bred in Cambridge and a chill went down my spine when Stuart went into the care of Mr Lavarak. There by the grace of God go I. I will definitely have to read the book too. RIP Stuart.

So sad watching Alexander go from smiling hearing Stuarts voice on the tape to being totally heartbroken at the way his friend had felt,"I just feel dirty and wish there could be some kind of an escape" Excellent, thanks for uploading
Even though you find about Stuart's death at the beginning, I spent the whole time wishing there was some way to save him. I fell in love with this character in the book and Tom Hardy does an amazing job portraying him. The scene where Benedict just cries breaks my heart but I was quickly laughing again at the sneaky book placement!! RIP Stuart Shorter, you incredible man.
Alexander is amazing to have brought at least some happiness into Stuart's short life. I cried and cried, even more so as it's a true story. It makes me feel like going out there and helping people like Stuart...a friend is sometimes all they need. I'm definately going to buy the book.
This film was so amazing I have recently taken the book 'Alexander, A Life Backwards' out from my library and so far am totally indulged in the book; I can barely put it down. It has some very funny parts, what a tear jerker!
Wow. R.I.P Stuart. And alexander has my most sincere thanks for having the perspective to see an extraordinary man in a seemingly inconsequential one xx thanks to Tom and Benedict too for portraying each of them so beautifully. R.I.P stuart shorter x
Amazing. The tears are just rolling down my cheeks. If Stuart didn't die i would have totally shipped Stuart/Alexander. @missrnickers I had the exact same thought. They loved each other so much, you could see it :) And I couldn't even cry at the end because I was so sure Stuart found some peace being with Alexander.

@Coppertunes Not necessarily...Once a video is clicked, it counts as a view whether or not it was watched all the way through. There's no way of telling if all those people actually watched it.
@xOProngsxO I don't believe they sell it here, but I may get a multi regional DVd player just to own this movie because it touched me so much. I cry so much for poor Stuart.
I have seen this film so many times, but it never loses it's impact. Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch are brilliant. That people go through things like Stuart did, it's so hard to comprehend that kind of cruelty and suffering.
Someone commented on Stuart's tattoos - how they changed form ugly homemade ones to tribal designs and that Tom Hardy went and got some. In reality, Stuart did that: it says in the book how he covered the ugly "fuck" with new stuff.
Funny, I've just been reading courses offered by my university this year and clicked on one by accident. It was "History of Psychiatry and Psychiatric Illness" taught by a Shorter.
That was one of the best BBC movie I have ever seen. Im crying so much that I can barely type the words right now. Thank you so much for uploading this.
Thank you for sharing this with us. I have an urge to go out to a homeless shelter right now and sign up to volunteer!
Been reading the comments throughout...a lot of girls say stuff like "even as a homeless drug-addict Tom Hardy is hot" or "only Tom Hardy could make a character like that sexy". It's so stupid and distressing that this is what they take away from it.
@some1tookmynick Especially when it is not true: he managed to show such acting mastery here that he looks terrible despite being really handsome in reality. A real transformation.
Again, thanks. And poor Stuart. No one deserves this.
This is amazing. I didn't know what I was expecting - all I knew was that Tom Hardy and Benedict were in it, so I had to see it. I had no idea it would be so... brilliant. I loved it.
OK. I have managed to gather my thoughts after watching that masterpiece of british film!My thoughts on this film is as follows and I hope it explains more than my last thought 'wow' I would like to say that My praise goes out the the writer of the book as if it was not for him we would not know the life of stuart and a hell of a lot more like him that a lot of people pass on the streets everyday. Good acting all round from both lead actors! Longtime since I seen a film like this. WOW
This is great, but at the beginning didn't he have real shitty tattoos? Seems like he had Fuck on his arms love an hate on his Knux now he has all that tribal work.
Extraordinary and tragic at the same time. Tom Hardy channeled Stuart Shorter in an almost eerily haunting fashion. Such a heartbreaking story. Stuart, you had a true friendship in Alexander and I hope you finally found a peace that you couldn't find in life. Thank you for posting this film. Bravo!
Hi this is Jo129 here iv'e made a new account im going to reupload Stuart a life backwards on here in the next few weeks as Jo129 has got a 3rd strike from a different youtube channel sharing the same email address, il leave this in the channel description aswell :)
Thanks so much for uploading this, never fails to make me laugh and cry. Tom Hardy is incredible as Stuart.
Mr Shorter, I'm glad you're at peace, the world can be a wonderful place but it was so very, very cruel to you. I'm glad you were blessed with a caring friendship towards the end with someone who saw your heart through it all and has kept your spirit alive with this book and film.
Remarkable story. Read book then watched film on here straight afterwards. My opinion has changed towards the homeless community over the last yearor so. So much so that i'm beginning work at a hostel in Cambridge in 2 weeks. Stuarts story has just re-enforced that.
I do not think Tom Hardy is credited for all the parts he has so far played in his life. For an actor so young 30(I think when he played Stuart) To play roles which are so in depth and he brings them to life. I've watched this film twice and each time I cry and laugh. So sad ......
Moving is an understatment. I have just broken down after watching these videos. Tom Hardy has put other actors to shame with this peice of excellence. Stuart Shorter deserved so much more, God bless him. x
Thanks so much for posting this. I sat here and watched Part 1 to 9. An amazing story and beautifully acted. Thank you! I'm not sure I would've been able to see it otherwise outside of the UK.
Very hard to watch in parts, but uplifting. Tom Hardy is outstanding and I am sure Stuart would approve. Thanks for sharing this so that I could discover it and learn a few more things about the struggle that is being human.
.i hope were doing better in our time.these people deserve better than whats been done in the 70's - I know were a more sensitive people in these times
Thank you so much for posting these videos. I read the book years ago and it moved me so much, I never forgot it. I hadn't realised they'd made a film of it until it was mentioned in a review of Tom Hardy's recent role in 'The Take'. I came straight on here and was so glad I could watch it... so thanks for that.
Moved to tears once again, a wonderful adaption of the book and Tom Hardy was outstanding as Stuart.
Stuart wherever you are, your story has been told and I hope you've found peace x
a tragic end to a tragic life. I was so angry at his brother, I remember hurling abuse at my tv when I first watched it. I hope Stuart is happier wherever he is right now.
Tom Hardy was so brilliant as Stuart - the man is a truly talented actor. His portrayal of Stuart was so effecting that it just sucked you in - I was so hoping that Stuart would survive, if even to thumb his nose as those who betrayed him so badly. I cried a lot when he didn't; so, so unfair.
thank you very much for posting this. i read the book today and it was great to be able to watch the film. very sad. a reminder to appreciate what i have and to care about others.
@zooloops682 The tape was really from before - when he attacked himself on the anniversary of his brother's death. Those thoughts were with him throughout. Remember him saying "You wouldn't believe how fucking hard it is to kill yourself sometimes".
Stuart went out with my Sister before he died (she was mentioned in the book but not in the film) and his family lived across the road from us. It was such a shock when he died. Well done Alexander, I'm sure he would be chuffed with the book and the film. RIP Stu
That was amazing! Such a good story and sooo well acted. Bravo!

This is great, but at the beginning didn't he have real shitty tattoos? Seems like he had Fuck on his arms love an hate on his Knux now he has all that tribal work.

@scumgod13 lmao i think that's tom's fault. he's got tattoos irl.

Bravo!

Tremendous acting!

That is awesome!! Good luck!

I cried a lot when he didn't; so, so unfair.

christ, I'm crying....this movie was absolutely brilliant but so sad
Tom Hardy was so fantastic in this role
That last part, with the tape....Alexander says he didn't leave a note, but he did, didn't he.....that tape was his goodbye
"I wish, just once, there could be an escape from this madness," Wow
An incredibly powerful and touching tribute to a troubled, yet truly amazing person
zooloops682 2 years ago 2
@zooloops682 The tape was really from before - when he attacked himself on the anniversary of his brother's death. Those thoughts were with him throughout. Remember him saying "You wouldn't believe how fucking hard it is to kill yourself sometimes".

Stuart went out with my Sister before he died (she was mentioned in the book but not in the film) and his family lived across the road from us. It was such a shock when he died. Well done Alexander, I'm sure he would be chuffed with the book and the film. RIP Stu
