I am enlisting soon and going for 37F. I know that technically they are part of SF, but they are not at the same level as the rest of SF, they provide a supporting role I understand correctly. How do other members of SF and the army look at Psyops guys?

@JamesWegmans psyop is in no way related to Special Forces. up until 2006 they were part of special ops but the only reason they work with SF is because SF has the balls to go out into cities by themselves and psyop tags along.

@wampasrt PSYOP is still a part of Spec-Ops, that's why Airborne is required. They work with all kinds of units, not just SF, but PSYOP also will train alongside SF quite often.

Psyops in the Reserves are no longer a part of USASOC, they now have their own command...USACAPOC....which still tasks many out with SO missions, but they are no longer technically under the USASOC umbrella. Airborne is not required for all Reserve units at this time....which is a bummer.

Doesn't mean you can't work at the detachment (or 'platoon') level, or be sent out as part of an analysis team from Product Development. CA use to be all prior long tabs for active duty but that changed a few years back so they are shit on as well now. You look at what Special Forces have to do compared to PSYOP and its night and day, if Psyopers acted like they weren't cool they would be treated better, but they try to act like they are on our level which is far from true.

Well, as a 20 year vet of the field I know many of my peers when I was a Regular went on a did well in SFAS, and we were sought out because we could easily qualify as 18D's. PSYOP officer and PSYOP NCO are totally different worlds. Alot also depends on the actions of the Team Chief at the TacTeam level. Since you're out there without an OIC, if you don't know your stuff and are passive, yeah, you can get shit on. But I've never had one of my teams marginalized.

Well i am not a 20 year vet, and in the recent years, PSYOP has not done very good in the Qcourse. I dont know why you think PSYOP would translate into good 18D's? The GT score for PSYOP is the same for all 18 series jobs, which means you are insinuating that the average psyoper is smarter than most SF grads, which is far from true. And team chief? a TPT has a team Sergeant not a chief. and a TPD has the O. Im glad you had good experiences in the past, things have changed.

Call me old school then but old terminology, and still used by most of the TacDets I've worked with, is we call the NCOIC on the TPT the Team Chief. And at the TPD, if you get an OIC that's great, but many a Det is run by the NCOIC for lack of O's.

I use to be active Psyop as well and spent time in 9th and 8th, since leaving for greener pastures i have made it my mission to bring the better soldiers over with me, unfortunately most of them who i know could make it, have not for what ever reasons. I was disappointed in my time there and when i get a TPT attached i try to square them away. But i see these kids running around the name "spec ops" and going from one to another you cannot even try to compare.

You can go PSYOP straight out of highschool, you dont have to be an E4. Im a 37f and at least half of the people i went to AIT with were straight form high school.

I'm not PSYOP, but I've done a quite a bit of research. If you go active duty then you go to language school, if you go reserve (75% of PSYOP is made of reservesists) you don't. I think the age limit is standard with most of the armies. Unfortunatly I don't think you can get in right out of highschool. You have to be E-4, so that means either go to college, or join after highschool and advance up the ranks.

@blakador: On the Regular side of the house there are opportunities to for both SERE and Ranger. For Active duty you also must do Airborne School. As far as the MOS goes, I've done it for over 20 years and had more opportunities and responsibilities then I think most enlisted would expect early in their careers.

Unfortunately, policy restricts the use of females in theatre and very rarely do females in PSYOP operate at the tactical level. Although they get some chances to go out with the teams, they pretty much are assigned to the PDD and HQ. Not exciting, especially knowing that female PSYOP'ers can be an invaluable tool at the tactical level because of their ability to talk to HN females at MEDCAP's or DENCAP's. They usually can gather a lot of good S2 during these missions which yield good results.
