I agree; the bosch bov's got to be leaking. I am by no means an expert on the subject. However from what I do know and correct me if I'm wrong. The BOV only acts as a quick exit to vent boost to atmosphere in the event the throttle plate is closed. Turbos are responsive to heat. Turbos HULK up during consecutive runs on the dyno due to the increase in heat. My 04 Z06 HP numbers went from 516, to 535, to 559 with only #7 boost with the STS kit. Torque did similar increments with max being 556.
i believe bovs are also used to help the turbos spool, since they will produce negligible boost until they reach a certain rpm, the bov can be opened so that the turbos dont have to compress anything until its up to speed. Also while boost isnt needed the bov can remain open to keep the turbos at speed, so that boost is really there when you need it
so in this case the new units may just be more accurately utilizing this ability, and the guy said it seemed more responsive so it seems possible
I think also BOV's help reduce surge. But not sure. I think I addressed why the BOV is closed off idle. In regards to fuel econo and speed up boost response. Bottomline is whenever the diaphram/spring in BOV senses a certain about of Vacuum. ??? then it has to open and dump remaining boost. How fast it dumps it is one thing. Turbos are kept to speed by WG. But once exhaust pressure on exhaust side of turbo is loss. It must rebuild speed to regain boost.
i think we are both right, but to elaborate on some of the mechanics . . . the bov is going to open post throttle shutting, so that like i said the turbo will not be trying to make boost without proper exhaust heat/pressure, at this time the turbo will be free wheeling until it is needed again
also to clarify WG dont keep turbos at speed, they prevent them from spinning too quickly, that is to say that 100% of exhaust will go through the turbo until the amount would exceed the turbos capability
Oh ok, I gotcha. I think we are saying the same thing just differently. In addition; the WG will bypass exhaust gases right? "Keeping turbo at speed/boost." Some exhaust gases are diverted away from the turbos exducer wheel to keep it turbos from providing more boost than the WG spring allows in psi or bar. All this ofcourse unless you have a boost controller that tricks or keeps the true boost amount from the WG Spring. In other words; the boost gauge may read #15 in intake with a #8 WG spring.
yup the WG will vent off the excess heat/exhaust gasses that would otherwise spool the turbo too fast, based of course on the systems you mentioned
on another topic, if theoretically the waste gate were to dump into another turbo, you have a sequential turbo system, which when implemented allow two small turbos to produce large boost without a great deal of lag, by spooling the first turbo completely before rerouting the extra gas into another turbo, systems like this can be found on supras/rx7
by the way, correct me if im wrong, i cant exactly find out where i got that information, so if its bs i would really like to know, but it seemed to make sense so im hoping my memory has served me well
also when the bov are open when not under boost, if the bov can more accurately determine the vacuum or lack there of in the intake, it will close more accurately, providing boost sooner, i.e. better response again
I do not know however quite interesting. A turbo application usually improves gas mileage under normal circumstances. I think that is due to turbos assisting in speeding the air thru intake. Not in boost condition yet but pushing air along. So I think anything off idle or low to no vacuum and BOV shuts. I think BOV's are mostly used for stick shift cars for a slow dumping of boost during lift throttle shifts to reduce lag. Keeps turbos from starting completely over to build boost pressure.

we isolated that variable. We ran it cold before, and with a long cool down time to install the BOVs ran it cold again and compared results. 3 runs with the BOV on didn't show a major difference, so it wasn't heat soaking.

I think this is an excellent time to educate myself and others reading this comment. My understanding of a BOV is: When the vehicle is on a dyno. It's closed. Closed is closed. So the BOV doesn't do anything until it senses intake manifold vacuum from closing throttle plate. Then it opens for 2 purposes I know of,...First, keep that boost from "stacking" or disrupting the spin on compressor wheel. Second, keep turbo spooled up to prevent lag between throttle lift shifts on stick shift cars only.
Sounds like the old BOV's were leaking. That would account for the better response in the low end and the overall horsepower gain with the new Synchronic BOV's.
So what is it doing? A bov should release excess boost pressure after the turbo when letting off the throttle. What is the trick to making quicker response and more power from a device with that job?
There has to be a blow off valve or overboost will inflict damage. Do you mean it doesn't leak excess boost, or maintains desired boost more accurately, but still releases desired boost?
the only reason why a bov releases boost is because when the throttle body closes the air is trap thus then its when it builds high pressure in the intake piping and the only way out is through the bov. so when the throttle body is oppend hance
continues......hance high acceleration there should be no leaks through the bov at all. but there is sometimes leaks do tho the weak structure of the bov not able to hold down the pressure. thats why a nice bov with a sturdy spring is how you get the actual boost your turbo is producing and leaks are slight to none
yes... but there is control of pressure in the intake to bud according to what ur BOV can hold thats how much pressure is going to be retained trust me
The bosch valves were likely leaking DURING boosted runs. Both valves will vent excess pressure at throttle lift but not allowing boost to escape with the throttle open is key.
