Haha, yes, I share your opinion (your friend's insane: ). You are probably right, there are two 'generations' of pokemon fans: the young adult/older teen generation (you), and the younger generation (Ruby/Sapphire onwards). I am somewhere in between (getting the best of both worlds : ) ).

while it certainly started out as a game boy game, I would say having a very popular anime series that has been going on for over 12 years with theatrical movies every year certainly gives me no reason to question how it could not be considered an anime. Yes, it started as a game obviously, but most conventions and convention goers I am familiar with tend to lump anime/manga/games all in one big melting pot of general anime fandom.

I can't go unless I have a ride, and when I briefly brought up the conversation with my mom she told me " don't scare me." like it would be behond freaky to go to one... and so the conversation ended there. since anime/manga is not as ingrained into the culture here as it in say tokyo, i'd say it's a longshot that the conventions will reach the same level of popularity here. However, having said there, anime expo, and other big name cons here are still massively huge.
