The reason why British roads may appear poorly designed compared with the French and Tinseltown ones that you are used to is due to history. Britain's roads stem back to the middle ages when roads were for horse and cart and walking and they still follow the same routes today. France's road system is better constructed because it had this misfortune of being the fighting ground of 2 world wars hence it was able to reconstruct a more modern transport network (autoroutes and TGV lines). Tinseltown is also a development that has built up considerably in the last century so has been able to plan its transportation network to cope with its population.
