@kenjames64 I am 15 and my dad raised me loving R.E.M. and now I can say they are definitly my all time favorite band. Thank you for posting my favorite live performance by them ever on youtube. I've watched all the way through several times and never get sick of it.
My fathers name is Ken, my middle name is James, and my grandfather just died at the age of 64. You may not care, but I thought that was kind of interesting, so thank you..
@Thelastkingofnowhere Mitch Easter, whose band Let's Active was on the same bill with R.E.M. that night. He also recorded in his garage studio and produced Chronic Town, Murmur and Reckoning.
Sorry for the dorky comment but I love seeing Bill Berry play because he mostly used a German grip. It doesn't look as polished as the French or the American grip but it's quite pleasing to watch (and he sounded amazing of course).
I made fun of r.e.m. until I saw them in Knoxville in 89, with 10,000 Maniacs. In the following 2 weeks I owned every album they had out, I was blown away. Their encore was Midnight Blue(Foreigner)
thanks for sharing this...haven't seen a show this old before, I think '86 was the earliest I'd seen, again...thank you!! really cool to watch this old footage. :D
question : how can it be that someone from the audience requested 'Ages of You' since it was not yet released anywhere then (only RFEurope single & Chronic Town) ?? a real groupie who knew all the songs they played live or a member's acquaintance ?
a certain sexual energy which was there in the early 80s and which has carried them through to their parting - who could you not love in the band? love peter holsapple being mentioned too......
Thanks for posting this! I went to UNC in the 1980's. This brings backs memories. I have seen them many times. I wish I had seen this concert! Thanks again!
Thanks! This brings back wonderful memories for me.Saw them @ the Carioca Club in Worthing on their Murmur tour. They were a very special band.Sad day as the band have called it a day-but watching this reminds me why I thought they were great!
@nilbog44 I'm from Holland so I don't know the American college scene. Were there many alternative music listeners, espescially in the eighties? Just asking.
@MrRobin14669 there were scattered throughout the country but not too many where i lived. i lived in oklahoma and i got into REM, the cure, the pixies, the smiths etc in junior high. and i literally knew NO ONE else that liked any of those bands. everyone liked crappy hair metal. then in high school everyone liked crappy country music like garth brooks. then in the 90s alternative became mainstream. but there were still great bands like pavement and yo la tengo etc
@nilbog44 Thanks. I got into R.E.M. in 1989 when a concert was broadcasted on the Dutch radio. I knew them from name and had read articles about them, but never listened to them. And when I heard the concert on the radio from Pinkpop 1989 (some of the songs are on YouTube, check it out), I was sold. This was my band. And still is. I prefer the pre-Out of time records, but also enjoy most of the songs from later years. I do like Collapse Into Now.
Sonofabitch! What a find! I was at this show. My ex-wife was a huge fan of theirs and we had Chronic Town on cassette. I also remembering it being a Sunday night cause I took off work the next day to go! Wow!
@kenjames64 Sure thing. On Carnival of Sorts, the extra guitarist is Peter Holsapple. Also, along with Ages of You, a song (or some kind of funky poem) called Jazz Lips was replaced by Wolves, Lower.

@cwatson426 That is a seriously spooky string of coincidences. I'm sorry for the loss of your grandfather, and glad you're enjoying the gig.

Kenjames64 You are one amazing dude. I've never even seen this. R.E.M. is like playing a frat party...and the quality is good too. Nice find!

GREEN was not good all the way through like their previous releases. FABLES was the oddball in its sound, but was still good all the way through.

@kenjames64 I'm not sure if they ever played it live. It's quite rare, but there are one or two recordings of it floating around I believe.
