this isnt really disco at all- more like a kinda late 60s-early 70s soul r&b sound, w/ a bit more a dancey/ 70s beat yet theres no 4 on the floor disco thump goin on at all.
Big dance hit at the Stonewall in Allentown, PA in the early to mid 70s...one of the first songs I ever heard as a young college going into a gay bar for the first time...it was like hearing an old friend....
This song was also recorded by Sylvia Smith (former member of the Invictus Records group The Glass House) on her solo album Sylvia Smith on ABC Records (ABCD-876).
I'm guessing that this song is among the earliest disco recordings. Disco sounded so much better than it's late 70s peak at least with funk and soul elemnets of music. I like this song!
Brunswick 55508 - I'm impressed. By comparing its catalog number with the long list of Chi-Lites releases also on Brunswick, this falls between their 'Homely Girl' (55505, 1-19-74) and 'There Will Never Be Any Peace' (55512, 4-27-74), so I figure 'Sympathy' was generally available in the US around February/March of that year. And my friend Coasterbear1954 (comment 1) was the person who alerted me to it :)
OMG Thank you so much for posting this classic! This song was on the jukebox at "The Lamplighter" in Camden NJ The only gay bar in south jersey at the time! The only time I ever heard it was there! I went out and bought the 45 quick fast and in a hurry!
@Coasterbear1954 I might know you - first heard this at the Allegro In Philadelphia in summer '74 til they carded me and I couldn't get in - then went to the Lamplighter for about 3 (?) years - remember some of the people, the bartenders, even the clothes I wore (Bambergers - Chess King)......
I miss the days....Thx for reminding me I don't need no sympathy....
