Eh, when I want to pick up big crap like that, my garage Shop-Vac is best. A better test between those two venerable home vacuums should focus on small particles embedded deep within the carpet.
I love Kirbys they are great and i think the kirby has the advantage of a wider nozzle to sweep through the paper i am doing up a 1981 kirby heritage hope to get it finished soon when some trim parts come from America to the UK. Dont know much about saniitaire but Kirbys they take some beating and they are so efficient and useful .

i think the Sanitaire did slightly better but like you said, it was very close
