  • can u be so kind as for nextime add the real photo next to the drawing for comparison thanks i like your style and i agree about mixing charcoal and pencils it just gives the drawing a rough look only pencils = smooth look ;) gj man

  • @TheBobimkd123 Yes, I will do that. thanks for the idea.

  • I could prolly draw this...in a few years lol really nicely done

  • wow

  • DRAW ME NEXT!!!DRAW ME!!! XD

  • FAKE FAKE!..

    ..

    ok ok.. im just jealous

  • it's ridiculous...

  • It's ridiculous...

  • this was probably one of the most brilliant drawings i have ever seen. i have never had much luck drawing realisticaly but i do draw manga and video game seens very well this was spectacular. i subscribed!!!

  • Henry plays this song ;D

And great drawing it is amazing.

  • wow this is incredible!!

  • Wow, thats awesome, I've done a drawing of Neytiri from avatar and a picture of a rose, check it out :) cheers

  • i didnt know people take art that seriously and nice music it suits in with the video

  • the glass table thing is a super idea!

  • wow you are really really talented :D its hard to belive this was all done in pencil O.O its so amazing.

ps this might the first video i have ever seens that has absolutly no dislikes and for good reason this is absolutly fantastic!

  • 50 hours! And all wearing the same sweater!!! The sweater must be the source of your extraordinary power!

  • Two Questions how long did that take you to do and did you only use pencils I thought i saw a charcoal stick

  • @kenobr Hi! It took me bit more than 50 hours of drawing time. I actually only use pencils. However, these pencils (caran d'ache) come in different shades of grey that corresponds to their grade - so the soft pencils are almost black on the outside. That's probably why it looked like charcoal. I've never had much luck mixing pencil and charcoal... though others seem to have found a way to do just that.

  • what is it that you were using to keep yourself from smudging & stuff -- that sort of.. sheet of glass.. thing? its brilliant, i'd like to try to use one of those when i draw, much better than using blank paper and not being able to see things relative to one another underneath it. --do they sell those things, or should i try to make one? o_o

    (and, of course, beautiful work.)

  • @CiipherZer0 Thank you! I am getting ready to start selling them - will keep you posted. but the one in this video is hand made.

  • @knightmonx2 the idea is she doesnt rest the side of his hand on the portrait and smudge the graphite.

  • how much would you say that the supplies and training cost you.

  • Incredible talent, but anyone willing to pay $3,000 to have their portrait done by you has a screw loose...

  • do you sometimes feek like you wasted time when you realize a photo copier could have did this in a couple second

  • @dude12345274 If you can say that, then you completely miss the entire point of Photorealism, or Hyper-Realism. You don't even remotely begin to comprehend the art form.

  • U would have to be OCD autistic extreemely patient and gifted to draw to do that

  • outstanding

but err i actually dislike drawing that looks too real :)

  • you use the glass panel to preven t smuging correct?

cause i awlays find my drawing getting all the marks on the sides of the fces and ruining the shading

  • very good job you've done there i think i need some more practice

  • nothing special. my printer can do like this. Almost :)

    i love it.

  • I thought the edge of the glass was actually an elastic band over the piece for measuring proportions then I found out it was glass but now I think the elastic band idea might be usefull for my next canvas piece so thank you for the accidental inspiration lol.

The drawing is outstanding, Im still trying to get my skills down with the portraits.

Anyways nice work and good luck with future works :)

  • @210dd no she did use an elastic band, haahahah and then she use the glass

  • This is epic and complete utter talent in all ways... but that ISN'T worth $4000. im sorry. still good, just not $4000 kind of good.

  • @kmorrisg Depends personal taste, A film maker spends thousands on equipment, whereas an art lover would spend $4000 on a piece of art work.

  • the pencil looks like it's dancing a ballet on the page :)

  • Wow you are a fu-kin human printer... Incredible....

  • That is absolutely beautiful! What is the thing you are using to rest your hand on that moves?!

  • @Drawurheart it's like a glass shield to keep your hand from smudging the picture while you are drawing the other side of the picture.

  • absolutely insane. you have to see the enlarged picture to understand the enormous detail. not only was the drawing itself a work of art, so was this video!

  • @SolidXTactics check rajacenna! the best

  • that is so amazing!! I am actually really good with shading, but I always have a hard time with composition and making the portrait actually look like the person. any tips?

  • song?

  • Perfec!

  • hi can i ask, what is the name of the glass thing u use underneath ur hand?

  • Vivaldi = good choice. Everyone likes Vivaldi. And of course the drawing is wonderful. Is there really any money to be made by doing this? Because I do the same thing all the time, but just for the sake for doing it. Can I be making some serious bread off this?

  • Your amazing! you inspire me! this looks really hard, i lke to sketch too, i hope to one day do a photorealist drawing like you. :] Really good job !!

  • Comment removed

  • @supermanuman95

Really? That is soo cool that you can do that!! Though, thinking about it... I can, too!! In fact, I not only "can", I "have" done that.

ROFL. Sorry superman, but I couldn't resist.... You definitely made my morning!

  • @DietkeFowler no problemo, but what i meant is that u draw with an amount of detail equivalent to the one of actual photos

  • @supermanuman95 The point of photorealistic drawing is doing what u can do with a simple click on the button of the camera, with our hands. You can do that with your camera, we can do it as well, big deal... but i bet that u cant do that with a pen and a piece of paper.

So, For the 2 guys who "voted up" u guys have no sence of what is art...

    nicely done DietkeFowler =)

  • @emmanuelsan00 i wasnt trying to be mean or anything i just meant that the amount of detail there is the equivalent to the one you would get with a photo, but if its such a big deal i erase my comment

  • I got an idea! put it in a mueseum and it says: a real photo graph? or a hand drawn?

  • That sliding glass thing, what is that and where can I buy one?

  • thats a good idea to have a glass cover. Im going to do that next time i draw

  • Incredible talent. Thank you for sharing.

  • That's some spectacular talent you have.

But I have to say; that glass slider is a genius idea. I can't believe I've never thought of that. Up until now, I've used a second piece of paper to preent smudging. Could you tell me what it's called? I'm starting to work with photorealism, and that looks like it would be insanely useful when getting down to the fine details.

  • You are extremely talented!

  • Tell me!!!!!!

  • Amazing! Have you checked out Chuck Close ? He is amazing :O

  • what were u jamming 2?

  • how much would you charge to draw a pic like that but of my wife??

  • @Jesus1229 Thank you for your interest!! Probably around $3,000. $4,000 if I am not the photographer of the picture. That does include the video... This year is pretty full, though - turn around time would have to be very flexible.

  • @DietkeFowler do u use the dry brush technique for the blending or do u use a blending stump?

  • @DietkeFowler Thats pretty expensive why is it that high? BTW your an amazing drawer... Plus do you get alot of requests?

  • @TheBlackKnight07 Thank you. Really, it's that high because that's how much I value my time and energy. Is it worth that much? Depends on your dispensable income. But for less I rather relax or do something for myself. That's not saying that I will always price that way, but for now, that's it. I get more requests for the glass right now than for my drawing skills LOL - but between drawing and photography, I definitely get more requests than I can handle in the time I have.

  • @DietkeFowler I'm not trying to be rude, I didn't watch the whole video when I sent that comment. But this picture really is worth that much. Probably even more then that.

  • @TheBlackKnight07 Thank you again! =) I thought you asked a very legitimate question in a very respectful way. I ask myself the same thing from time to time =) I am thrilled to hear that you feel it is worth that much. I wish I could show the original better.

  • omg FANTASTIC

  • i feel so discouraged when i see people draw this good.

  • @akhanian don't be i beat myself up as it is wishing i could draw better just keep drawing and save all your favorites in a binder that's what i do

  • wowo epicly good

  • wow!!! very nice!!!! :-)

    watch--->juliana moreira,speed drawing

  • hey im 13 years old and i can draw this good, ive been drawing for 3 years. people say im talented :D btw listening to music throws me completely off track, how do u manage? :o

  • Lovely work. I love the idea of the covering glass.

  • I think everything in this drawing is exceptionally realistic excluding that is...the girl in the picture. I don't know what it is exactly, perhaps the proportions but something seems off. However, I really admire the reflection in her eyes. This is still a really great work of art. Kudos to the artist.

  • this is IMPOSSIBLE!

  • Absolutely phenomenal...

  • Awesome skills, I wish I could draw like that! You can always draw my portrait~ ;3

  • Good work i like :D

  • do u allways use rulers and stuff?

  • What I wouldn't do to try to draw as well as this.

I might give up playing lotto every week.

I draw and draw and draw, and it's all disappointing. Keep up the good work.

I love watching these time lapse videos.

  • I found using a grid is the best method for me to work on getting a photorealistic image, though i'm not as good as this :P It's not as easy and quick as people think to draw like this.

  • i think its incridible to draw something like this for 52 hour..OMG..i wouldn't do that..

    btw..what is the background song?

  • It's the third movement of some vivaldi piece, forgot the name though

  • @koghokmung Thank you! Yes, that is a movement from Vivaldi's "Four Seasons". I think it's the third movement in Summer. Check out Nigel Kennedy's version if you have the option. =)

  • looks like a black n white photo...if i haven't seen this vid i'd think you'd print it out or something, really envious of ur talent ^^ keep up the good work

  • this is awesome

  • I really love the sliding glass thingy, really useful. I need something like that. Great portrait.

  • drawing on top of a photo?

  • noo... there are definite differences between the drawing and the photo... it just doesn't appear that way... the photo is close by, but it's not under the paper.

  • even if it were underneath u cant see it in such detail

  • Amazing stuff, very beautiful, I do computer based rendering that isn't art like this is but is useful all the same. See: watch?v=mcvitx41YHk

  • pure tehnick, art is more then some photorealistic drawing! See some paintings from Claude Monet or Manet 2 best impresionistic painters that i like :)

  • well, 'art' is impossible to define these days. and if you Like impressionists, i can certainly see that photorealistic pencil drawing based on digital photography isn't your cup of tea. But since I took the photo, too, it is more than just technique... that doesn't make it art, but more than just technique, don't you think? though considering cgsbgs's skill with color I'm sure he'd be the first one to agree with you that Monet and Manet are far superior to anything we can do...

  • but since the camera doesn't really "see" what a person looks like, isn't it a poor choice to do photo derived portraiture? The true artists of the photorealist movement utilized the camera to build compositions out of things that were impractical to draw and paint from life-parked cars, busy cityscapes, reflections etc. The element of neutrality of the unseen world was part of this movement. Isn't alot lost by judging a person's image by what the camera records?

    -not knocking your skill JS

  • you know, JS, that's some really interesting observations. I've been mulling over them for a while now and probably will do so some more. one thought that comes to mind is that in that case, photographers would take all very much the same photo, and for instance it wouldn't matter if people are photographed by Anton Corbijn or by Annie Leibovitz. But I think there are huge differences in what they show or say about the people in the photos.

  • So if the question is not the value of using photography for portraits, the question remains if drawing such a photo does then create photorealism. and I think you are right that it doesn't. so then the next interesting question is what a drawing of a photo that looks like a photo falls under. But as i said, i need to think some more about the questions you put down...

  • Very awesome. Highly inspirational. REAL art.

  • omg i wish i could draw like this ... it's soooooo amazing

  • nice but your paper is smoll :(

  • Brilliant...absolutely first class...I'm green with envy!

  • Very good! i would love to draw again... but as a mother of a 3 yr old and a 5 month old, i dont get much free time. if i ever did get time to do something like that i might spend it sleeping instead of drawing! LOL. Great work! maybe in 18 years you'll get to watch a timelapse drawing i did... LOL

  • Dietke your talent is truly amazing! Do you just do faces?

  • Thank you very much!! I'll draw just about any general subject I get paid for =) I've done nature and architecture before, too. I'd love to draw a horse, but haven't had the time yet. Portraits are my favorite, though, as I love people.

  • I'm really impressed.

  • whoa....and i thought i was good....WOW...i just saw your website n i really want to know: how long did it take you to draw that mans beard??? :P (you-are-amazing, your artwork is "jaw-dropping"..wow) :)

  • thank you so much, kingmcbrian!!!! the entire drawing of the man's beard took 26h, spread over 3 days and nights and a few more hours after a week or so. kinda crazy, drawing a non-black beard... ;-)

  • LOL - no, i didn't... It was 52h drawing time over about a 30-day period. =)

  • amazing

  • You are amazing! The best drawer I have ever seen!

  • OMG. Amazing!

    Can u draw my portrait??

  • absolutely b-e-a-utiful!!

  • why didnt u use a totillion for shadeing

  • I think I don't like the soft look they create. ;-)

  • Dietke-

Your hands are a gift. Draw more!! You have the talent.

BTW, I have a couple of questions to trouble you with in regards to your video. What kind of pencils did you use to color the hair and the shoulders. The glass panel you use to protect from smearing, is that your own invention? If it is, please let me know what the white borders are around it. Love to hear from you (and see more of your videos!)

  • Thank you very much! I'll definitely draw more...

As for pencils, the Cranan D'Ache pencils are fortunately color coded, so you may be able to see some of this in the video: The darker they are, the softer they are. On the shoulders, I would have put down about 10 very light, even layers with a very hard pencil, about 2 with medium pencil, and 5 with various soft pencils. The hair would have been some 9B layers where it was really "safe", an F or B where there was hair and 6B right around that.

  • i love u in an ur incredibly awesome kind of way

  • Great Job, Dietke! Truly artistic and precise. I am proud and honored to know you.

I can't wait for the next one, too!

  • is it freehand

  • most of it is. I start by taking the digital photo, then turn it into a black & white, and print it . In the video, you can see that seconds 13-15 have a light shine from below, which was when I had the photo under the drawing and marked where the high contrast areas are - like her hairline and eyebrows. Around 0:31, you also see a ruler; I was putting down a grid - primarily for the flower area. As soon as I have the main lines down, I erase the grid so it doesn't interfere with the shading.

  • When there are specific areas that I want to get into the right spot right away, I also use a ruler to measure where they need to go. But as you can see from the time lapse, the vast majority of time is freehand.

  • i knew you were talented, but this is beyond fantastic - thanks for sharing!

  • Wow, the time lapse is cool, but what's really impressive is the drawing! So lifelike!

  • Stunning! Can't wait for the next one...

  • AWESOME!

  • this is awesome XD

    great job!!
