The voice is only good like 8% of the time, when he sustains into a vibrato. Otherwise, geeze man, you're a fellow professional performer? Surprising. Don't be afraid to actually sing on occasion. And what's up with the weird riffs? Come on man. If you really are professional, what's going on? And next time, try to be somewhat real and vulnerable, it comes across fake, pushed, and well....gay. Cheyenne Jackson is one of the few Gay men who can pull off straight. Keep workin'.
I saw him a few weeks ago when he did this show in Columbia, SC. Jon has a great voice and I loved his quirky take on the character! The Schmuel song was AMAZING!
I really liked this rendition. It has the energy and expressiveness that a lot of pieces are lacking. He has a great voice! You know, everyone's entitled to their opinion, but it would be nice if people would be less judgmental and just enjoy the music instead of picking it apart.
AHHHHH! Why does the pianist leave out an eighth note in almost every measure? The last eighth note in the first measure is tied to an eighth note on beat one in the second measure. That first eighth note in the second measure gets omitted every time the pianist plays the riff. Uggggg.
ummm... great voice! just a little over the top... but an energetic jamie is better than a boring one... ive seen this show a few times live and you are by far a better singer than any of those i saw
For those addressing this "you" the guy didn't post a video of himself, it's a video of a production. Any acting choices were more than likely agreed on by the director, so this isn't a mistake of being new to acting, and proving that I googled the guy, he's won a lot of awards for singing and won awards in when he was in college studying theatre.
that's very true actually. I mean...someone didn't tell him to take it down a notch but it is much harder to bring someone up then to bring them down. so it's always better to start up.
don't ever do that song again. its not for you. you overacted it way too much. and whoever played the piano for the song played it wrong. calm down when singin that song. you gotta be suave and chill about it. you definitely didn't do either in this song
Do you know what a "stager" even is? LOVE to see you post a utube of yourself and be open to eneducated critisim like yours. The guys is a successful cabaret singer in NYC, and a good friend of mine. I went to your page, Allieistreble and couldnt find anything there to look at.
@lrathner Idk.. I think allieistrble has got a point, staging seems alittle awkward, and the pianist is all over the place.. Not my favorite performance of this song.
yeah....that pianist is HORRIBLE...he was cutting out half a beat every measure any time the montuno theme was playing...you stayed with it pretty well but jesus christ that pianist should be shot.
no...i played this song on piano for many vocalists while in college a few years ago and it's played incorrectly. sorry i sound like a dick but it's just not right and you'll notice it if you listen carefully.
uhm...first, yell at your pianist, it's really annoying to listen to someone not playing this right. you have a decent voice, but most of your choices were really overdone. the "someone like you" at the very end sounded really tense and you didn't sound like that the whole time-could just be fatigue-talk to a voice teacher. last comment: i think you may have spent a little too much energy trying to make this performance different from Norbert's, and not enough time making it genuine.
Nice job. Your voice is nice & you're lovely to look at...just tone down the energy a tad, because you tend to overact. Other than that, good performance!
This is really awesome. L5Y is my favorite show and I have seen several productions all over, yours is by far my favorite interpretation. You really captured the excitement behind young love in a way that (gasp) Norbert couldn't even find. Some of it may be a little over the top, yeah... but i think that might have been a directorial choice. Fantastic voice and prescense. Would love to see more of this production...
I think its fine. The acting is really dramatic..if anything but thats musical theatre. The last note at the end got teenie strained, but overall its great.
I think you're really good. I also like your flicky bit of hair at the front. Wasn't sure about the second verse. And maybe stand with your feet further apart sometimes. But the overall impression I got was one from a very talented person.
Awesome voice. I agree with the others who have posted in that it was slightly over acted in a few places, but in general it was great - this isn't an easy piece! I also really appreiciated how you didn't simply copy Norbert, but made the song your own. Great job! :)
Nice job. I like that you did some interpretation rather than just try to reproduce the cast recording as so many do. Very frustrating to listen to the pianist flop the rhythm however - not a good interpretation there!
I actually saw Jonathan perform this live, at Cafe Lena. The production was pretty good, and I do agree that he overacted. But he has a very nice voice, and I really enjoyed watching this performed in my own town.
I think Jonathon did a really good job overall with this. I'd be really interested to see his perfomances with some of the other songs in the show. There were two or three moments where I felt he overdid it slightly, particularly towards the end, but I really did enjoy it.
i hve seen people really over-act this it doesn't need it coz the lyrics speak pretty much 4 themselfs u really did succeed... NICE 1!!! where did u perfrom this ?
Thanks for posting this. I really liked it overall. My number one critique is that the pianist is not sticking with the bossa nova feel to the number...After that, I would tell you that there is a reason that Jason Robert Brown wrote melodies versus "singspeak" ...I think you are incredibly talented, but I want you to tone down your instincts a bit and keep your eye expressions in check, and keep the show more organic than showy. Thanks for posting, and great job!!!

this is the gay-ist jamie i've ever seen sing this song... i thought he should have changed all those girls names to guys names...
broadwaystud2004 2 years ago
this was pretty good, but you could sing more instead of just talking in pitches.
and the pianist kept messing up one rhythm and it was bugging me the whole time.
and honestly? sing. dont talk in pitches. it doesnt sound very good.
when you did sing it was good though

Get a malet and hit the piano player over the head with it...and again...and again...
I don't mind your singing but seriously it was hard to listen to coz of that bloody piano...hit him again...

a little too much "uniqueness" on the role.
norbert got the part for a reason.
your stager and pianist should be shot though.

Wow, my brain hurts from trying to re-insert the 8th notes that the pianist consistently took out of this song. Shiksa Goddess in 7/8, anyone?
