How does the fact that the plane was rented in any way vindicate him? He knew exactly how old the plane was, if he didn't it's indication that he doesn't give a f*ck about what happened, aside from the obvious financial impact. Many budget airlines use new planes... Look at Tiger Air and Air Asia (Malaysia).

They are paying the dead more than Thai airways paid. Well its not worth for what you lost, but it shows that they take great responsibilty. The Phuket airport had more land space in case of plane skiding off runway, I guess less would have died. The airport is surrounded by hills. If the terrain was plain, the plane woulnd't have hit that hill. Also the aiports wind sheer apparatus..3 of 6 were working. Id rather fly any carrier in Thailand, but not to Phuket as destination.
