Verdi is the true master of opera in all languages!!!
after years of hearing the italian version i thought that the french wouldn't have anything new to show me, i was so wrong this is a complete diferent opera!!!
every note of the score is just amazing!!!
if you are an opera fan you must buy this dvd!!! the cast is unbelievable. Alagna never sounded better!!!
muezzab thank you it ismore than moving and both of the singers know very well what it is, wonderful it is Verdi, Posa's role in the oevre is fundamental
To Beathame88 - but of course it's in shops - that's one of most famous dvds with this opera. Just type in google "Don Carlos Pappano Alagna Hampson Van Dam Mattila Meier Salminen" or only some of the names - every shop has it.
Don't you also find French version (original actually) better suiting, easier to sing? I am amazed by this rec.
D'accord. C'est ici le répertoire pour Alagna et sa belle voix lyrique. J'espère que l'on le reverra en ce rôle de "Don Carlo" version française. Van Dam est superbe ici et aussi dans "La Damnation de Faust" montée cette année à Chicago.
Last year I've seen the italian version of Don Carlo. This scene was restored and it was great. Such a powerful scene! It makes my heart beat faster, it's really moving.
Thanks for sharing this scene. Posa's death scene has always seemed too abrupt, both in the Italian and the previously-available French versions of the opera. This missing scene provides exactly the the heart and the moment of reflection that Posa's death absolutely demands.
This scene tugs at my heart so much......one of Verdi's very BEST moments and God bless Porter for giving it back to us....I love it. Much as José Carreras remains my favorite Infante....not even he and Cappuccilli brought Rodrigo's and Carlo's connection (In this production it's downright love) to life like this. I wept my eyes out when Posa was shot in this version....
Who knew the human heart better than verdi ? I wonder is the latter recording that Guilinni made in French has this scene.? Although an already shakey Domingo could not have sang it as beautifully as Alagna . VIVA VERDI Elias : )
I absolutely love this performance of DON CARLOS. This scene was deleted after the dress rehearsal in 1867, but fortunately Andrew Porter rediscovered it in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris in 1970, and it has been restored - I love it, because it is more consistent, musically and dramatically, and also because it brings the opera closer to Schiller's play.
I have exactly the same feelings. This scene is sooo beautiful and however I still don't understand, why Verdi made the Inquistor's scene before Posa's death and why Eboli suddenly becomes a penitent-angel (if all people are noble, why make a tragedy of Don Carlos?), this lacrymosa creates some "schillerian" atmosphere, just like Don Carlo/Rodrigo duet in second act.
I must admit that I have not yet scene the Italian Don Carlos. is this scene in it? It would be a shame if such a powerful scene was deleted. Anyone know?
This was a milestone in music history. This is one of the finest casts ever assembled and headed by one of the finest operatic conductors who ever lived. The French version, rarely performed, truly surpasses the Italian version. There is truly no comparison. Just magnificent. For any opera fan this is a must own DVD.
Un des plus beaux airs de Don Carlos, c'est domage que Verdi l'ai mit pendant un certain temps dans les Appendices pour la version de Paris me semble t'il. Alagna et José Van Dam sont merveilleux !
As I mature as an opera lover, my passion for Verdi grows and grows. I had the absolute pleasure of being a supernumerary in the Italian version in San Diego and just fell in love with Don Carlo. This is so beautiful, thank you so much for posting. I'll have to find the full French version to explore the differences.
I am happy you love it as well. I confirm your feelings having been in the audience twice. Lucky me ! The most impressive & emotional experience I've ever had at the opera to date...

@grandmagrumpy Yes, yes, You are right!
Excuse me, I have understood the french and italian versions.
The lacrymose scene is genious but I didn't listen that in November 22 - MET opens the new season by the italian version of Don Carlo.
TheZOOM6488 1 year ago
@grandmagrumpy Verdi actually recycled this music into the Lacrymosa section of his Requiem so that's probably why.

Exactly Verdi used this part of Don Carlos (1867) in the requiem (1874)
C'est le Requiem qui utilise ce passage de Don Carlos et non l'inverse.

How much is more "french" this opera's moment than italian one. It's a great exemple of Verdi's genius. Great interpretation also!
