I always assumed the "Hahn-sel" remarks were part of the general anti-German theme of the cartoon. This is a world war II era cartoon i believe, or just after. Notice the fat glutinous German children...
Bugs Bunny cartoons were full of references to topical issues, advertising and movies. Many of which are lost on us today. I have always assumed this joke was a reference to something like a radio play or an advertisement that didn't have the longevity of Warner cartoons, so the reference is lost and today it just seems like the characters are saying a weird name in a strange way for no good reason. But one thing about these cartoons is that every gag always had a reason.
It's because they pronounce it "Hahn-sel", whereas Bugs is American and expects it to be pronounced "Han-sel". He's just reacting to the strange (for him) pronunciation,
I remember there is somehitng I don't understand in this chapter: Everytime someone says the name Hansel, another character gets this reaction (it happens to Bugs Bunny and the Prince): Hansel?... Hansel?... Hansel! Can you or any other explain that joke, please?
I think because its supposed to be pronounced "HANSEL" with the "A" sounding soft. But here the kid puts a harder sounding "A" to it.Which is why they look confused, because who really (besides the kid)says that name like that?
I think it's because he's making the connection to the book he was reading... once he makes the connection, (Hansel? Hansel!) he suddenly realizes that the witch wants to have them for dinner and warns them.
@chepepuy i think it might be because hansel is quite a strange and very german name, and its quite hard to pronounce...other than that, i dont think i know..sorry :L
@chepepuy I had a hard time figuring it out as well. I think it was the way "Hansel" was pronounced. I guess ppl usually just say Hansel (particularly "han" as said in the word in "hand"). In the cartoon it was said with an accent ("Hahn" as if a British/European person were saying it). I'm guessing when it was said with the accent...the characters and people during that time never pronounced it that way before, so they were confused as to who "Hahnsel" was.
@chepepuy In America we say Han-sel like hand and the kid has an accent (like he really would!) and says Hawn-sel so Bugs Bunny is puzzled and repeats it back. My husband and I have been saying this for years when some gets a quizzical look on their face and repeats a word. Too funny.
@chepepuy it's because the prince is looking for sleeping beauty or something and is confused by the character (hansel) being from a different fairy tale.
@chepepuy because normally you would here it pronounced Hansel (like with the and sound)...in the cartoon they would pronounce it HaHNsel (like a stuffy artistocratic pronunciation)...
@chepepuy It's a play on the fact that they are pronouncing it Hahn-sul, when most folks at the time in America would have pronounced it Han-sul (like "hand" without the "d").
would love to see the whole cartoon... *sniff* ;)

The part where he's reading Hansel and Gretel that I was referring to is at the very beginning of the short... it isn't in this clip.

Good point. However,at the end when the knight shows up,he pretty much does the same thing Bugs does at the beginning.
