This is one of the reasons why I love Devin Townsend's singing/music so much. He has so much variety and so many different styles to offer. He can be aggressive and angry in his approach, but he can also be peaceful and laid back as well. This is such a gorgeous song. Dreamy, emotional vocals and excellent choice of chords. Nice video too. I love the various views of the galaxy/universe.

What I'm wondering is, ALL of Hevy Devy's music has this real trance sound to it, I always think of space for some reason. It might be keyboards he's using, but whatever.

My question is, I hate it when people say "nu metal," "black metal", and all this branch shit from metal. So, that said, I still want to know what to classify this as.

Good questions. He definitely makes use of keyboards, but a big part of the "spacey" sound comes from his guitar setup (see v=cQxeYQt1OAs). I think a lot of those ambient sounds you hear on Ziltoid are created using a guitar.

As for the genre, I classify this as Alien/Coffee metal. ;)

But I suppose "Progressive" and "Avant-Garde" both have the same intentions.

Something made out of the endeavour of experimentation. Like, I'd label early Pink Floyd as very avant-garde for its time.

But nowadays, "Prog" has come to mean something else entirely and usually just ends up being a buzzword for describe pomp, pretense and/or bombast. In which case, this album fits the bill. It's very over the top. Avant-Garde? Not so much.

Both fit, really, though progressive probably DOES suit it better by definition, prog-metal means something else nowadays and is stereotypically pretty close to power metal. Hence why I offered avant-garde as another term; it is nowhere near as defined. Which I think is pretty important in this case.

I find it very annoying that when you mention prog metal, it's Dream Theater that comes to people's minds, while we have great bands such as Opeth, Cynic, Sadist, Amaseffer, Tool... the list goes on. People should realize that prog isn't just about jumping around like silly people and playing fast.
