metal? devin isn't metal, is far more better than metal...is a god...saturday i've met him, talked to him and seen a concert...this song live is incredible...devin is incredible...
This is one of the reasons why I love Devin Townsend's singing/music so much. He has so much variety and so many different styles to offer. He can be aggressive and angry in his approach, but he can also be peaceful and laid back as well. This is such a gorgeous song. Dreamy, emotional vocals and excellent choice of chords. Nice video too. I love the various views of the galaxy/universe.
Thank god Devin is so prolific. His music has ruined other music for me; all I can listen to and be satisfied by now is stuff he's written. It's that good.
Keep 'em coming Dev! I'll be waiting for Z2, in the meantime can't wait for Deconstruction and Ghost!
Good for you. You should get into the stuff he did with Steve Vai, and get into Steve Vai/Frank Zappa as well ;) seriously, i think there's a great likeness to those 3 guys ways of making music
Hmm, Progressive, Industrial, Metal with a unique twist. I think that The Devon Townsend Band, as well as the Strapping Young Lad band are fine examples of what it is like to set yourself apart from not only relaity but mainstream trends as well. Devon Townsend has set him self up to declare himself the ;Anit-Product'
it's true what they say guys!? people that listen to Devin Townsend DO have the best taste in music hahaha!!! Dev i hope you realise how much you're music means to US ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Devin Townsend is the most metal... being... ever to have existed.
He is an exeptional producer, also.
What I'm wondering is, ALL of Hevy Devy's music has this real trance sound to it, I always think of space for some reason. It might be keyboards he's using, but whatever.
My question is, I hate it when people say "nu metal," "black metal", and all this branch shit from metal. So, that said, I still want to know what to classify this as.
Good questions. He definitely makes use of keyboards, but a big part of the "spacey" sound comes from his guitar setup (see v=cQxeYQt1OAs). I think a lot of those ambient sounds you hear on Ziltoid are created using a guitar.
As for the genre, I classify this as Alien/Coffee metal. ;)
As a truck driver who drives at night I drink many cups of joe. I just purchased Ziltoid and it also helps keep me alert! Alien/Coffe Metal!LOL...Love it! Thanks AtOne...whens the next Morbid Angel album coming out?
But I suppose "Progressive" and "Avant-Garde" both have the same intentions.
Something made out of the endeavour of experimentation. Like, I'd label early Pink Floyd as very avant-garde for its time.
But nowadays, "Prog" has come to mean something else entirely and usually just ends up being a buzzword for describe pomp, pretense and/or bombast. In which case, this album fits the bill. It's very over the top. Avant-Garde? Not so much.
Well, that was in response to some one else. Both fit, really, though progressive probably DOES suit it better by definition, prog-metal means something else nowadays and is stereotypically pretty close to power metal. Hence why I offered avant-garde as another term; it is nowhere near as defined. Which I think is pretty important in this case.
As I said, if you feel like arguing the point repeatedly.
Nah don't get me wrong man. I tried to make the point without being argumentative. I just felt the need to perhaps clarify the differences between the two different labels is all. :)
Now that's well said. I find it very annoying that when you mention prog metal, it's Dream Theater that comes to people's minds, while we have great bands such as Opeth, Cynic, Sadist, Amaseffer, Tool... the list goes on. People should realize that prog isn't just about jumping around like silly people and playing fast.
there's 1 album by devin townsend that I can't listen too, and that is infinity. Besides that I think all the albums are equally good in their own respective.
I read somewhere (can't remember where) that Devins next solo album might be an ambient album of sorts. I like a lot of ambient music, and I would be interested to hear his take on it. Hopefully his current hiatus doesn't last too much longer.
Insanely good.
