Thank you for this well made documentary. I have been a fan of Tinariwen for many years now (having heard them in Mali in 2004), and this video really captures what they are about. I particularly love the lyrics with the music, so much power in the stories.
"Nomad culture is as old (if not older) as the cultures of ancient Greece and Rome. It's a culture which conhabited with the Pharaohs and with the Phoenicians"
Everyone - Keep telling your story...so many want to know...it helps tear down the barriers between us...we can be one without all being the same...keep your culture and appreciate those of others, and the world won't lose the last of its beauty...enough damage has been done, enough blood spilled, and we don't want to take the disaster to the extreme do we? But gentleness isn't a completely lost virtue, respect still has the power to unite, and love can heal every wound...
check out this artist on itunes, writing about the same things. YouTube won't let me post a link, but search Lazar One Kingdom and you'll find it. From one overcomer to all the others - power to the people, the power of love makes us One!
When I was a little girl I fell in love with horses. Having an artist's heart, I then picked my favorite horse, the Arabian. Then I fell in love with the idea of nomadic life. I'm just an American white girl who dreamed of being an Indian, a bedouin, a pioneer...I have never outgrown my hatred for fences and telephone poles or my love for tribal culture, for ancient origins. And I thank God that there are still some alive who keep those ancient fires burning, proud and beautiful and FREE.

@revcafe those poeple are not arabs ; they are Imazighen , they can not even speak an arabic word ; see Wikipeadia and search for the name "touareg" or "tamacheq"
Berber are not Arab,Berber have unique Culture, langauge and way of life. Arab is invader in North africa. Berber have live in Africa for thousand of Years before Arab invader, People Like Hanibal,Servanus, Tarik that rule part of spain were all Berber and other great legend of Past.
Some Berber may marry Arab later, In Africa we have many People that similar to Tuareg, Like Beja,Sidamo,Somali,Fulani,Wadabe,Tudu,Suwah,Oromo,Nubian,Watusi, and Many more als African we must tell our own story.
I worked and lived in Algiers years ago I went to a music concert of Berber's they sang in Kabyle it was a wonderful experience the cry of joy a blessing this ancient culture has much to teach us ,the music is spiritual like the Sahara a mystery captivating ,music is the history of the people, it touches the heart by reminding us of their journey through this world the caravans the sky the sun desert and stars all things of great beauty to the eye of the beholder,Is not life a blessing?
i am of mexican european heritage. i speak spanish and english. i have never heard music like "tinariwen" before, I LOVE IT. i admire them and i thank them for bring their music out to the rest of the world. it only makes this world more interesting and beautiful.
He reminds me of Bob Marley... I love their music and I will see them on 4/22 in Chicago. I don't understand their language, but I do understand the beauty in their music.
These songs are great, but to be understood in the world they need to add in an English language vocal track.
Suggestion ... sing in the original Toureg language, but with cooperative vocals in English. This can be done by taking the repetitive sections and using the English translation for various parts.
Wow..I appreciate the translated documentary..very moving. All humans are created equally..ancient knowledge from the heart. And to live in the desert? respect.. It's sad what they had to go through with the rebellion..World Peace!
The music touched my soul and I relate to it as we are the tribes of north-west sudan. We share the smae oentatonic music scale and we also share the desert. I loved the starting vocal which resembles our "dobait" sang by bedwins during their long desert trips. Pleae tell me the name of the starting vocal shown at the very begining if the clip.
Hey 1niels, the track that kicks in at 7.50 Is called Matadjem Yinmixan and it's from the Album Aman Iman. It's a seriously silky tune in my opinion!!!!!
awesome video thanks for putting it up. i appreciate the songs even more now knowing what some of them are about, whereas before i listened purely because i liked how it sounded without knowing the meaning.
I love especially the last words, the saying of the Touareg - the earth has only one sun - all humans are equal - I love Blues, Jazz and Fusion, now I love Touareg Music, the Touareg Blues - Guitars and Drums - Wonderful music!
I've been in Morocco for a month and later Tinariwen came to Portugal, to my home town and I watched them play along with Vieux Farka Touré. And while we were in the show room you could feel the energy in the air. They're quite amazing. Thank you for posting the video.
I think you should go visit first and then you make up your mind, 'cause I can tell you how beautiful I think Morocco and people from there are but it's my opinion and maybe we have different tastes.. But I think you'll love it :)
I was born in europe but because I'm from moroccan origin it's difficult to explaine why I feel a strong conexion with touaregs and other berber people in algeria, tunisia, niger and all over north-africa.
merci for the video, there music is amazing , i remember when i discovered them at the local library , i become obbsessed and used to listen to them everytime , their music is mesmirisng and really hunting , i always knew their musik was deep and that at it has a deep emotions and strong messages behind. im going to the desert festival next year wehn i finnish university
can you all stop this? peoples from north africa, middle east, they are all beautiful, they all make beautiful music, they all have a beautiful culture.
nope man.. I am sorry. read you history. you are eather an arab colonist or you deny your own berber culture. North african people are 99% of berber decent. that's where our culture come from! not from the arabs in the middle east. the only thing we have in commen is the religion and partly the language, only partly. go on and talk algerian with a real arab, he wont understand a thing!! so believe it or not you are most probably berber. read your historie :P
dude you read history, cause when the arabs invaded the north african regions, there werent any big cultures, the berbers were few, and maybe there were some descendants of the fenician colonies, or descendants of the carthagean empire, or vandals, but they mixed with arabs, and adopted their culture (a lot of it) so i dont think that you could say that northern africa is 99 percent the descendant of berbers...
Take your Arabic language and please go back to the Middle East to join your Arabic brothers fighting the Jews or the Christian Arabs. Which Culture did the Arabs bring, killing babygirls? The desert culture of robbery? Go...
hey... you talkin about how algerian is different than the language in other arab countries... THEY CALL IT DIALECT!!!--all arab countries have their own dialect, some are similar, some are different. And excuse me, look at the arquitecture, the buildings, do you think that those come from berbers, or what? Both cultures are rich, but I wouldn't say, that north africa is almost all berber.
(ohh and im half Lybian, and i speak with algerian people, and even though its different, i understand...)
berber is no dialect , if it wasnt the arab colonisation of north africa, we would have been up there with the other nations ,arabs conquered us by the name of islam, they took over our land ,killed and repressed our people , the berber people ,wether targuis , kabyles , chaouis , chelhi...et j'en passes
and i thank my friend grandjoh for his comment, at least this guy is aware and knows something about history
I don't know what you're saying, but a Finnish comment on Berber music, really ... What about Papuan comments on Saami music ... do you think that could be next ?
aman iman doesn't mean water is life, it mean water and life, because if there is water there is life, and if there is life there is water !!! the two have the same writing!
Since seeing 'Tinariwen' for the first time on sunday night at Glastonbury i am now an absolute life long fan... I always wished i'd been old enough to see Jimi Hendrix and feel that feeling that people always talk about when witnessing something so new and different that it goes beyond belief... I can't describe as well as i'd like to the many facets to this amazing musical experience... Here are just a few... Entrancing... Haunting... Fufilling... Magical... Spiritual...
you are so right! i seen them in edinburgh in summer 07! they literally blew the roof off! iv seen many great bands that are legends but tinariwen are mesmerising! they awoke spiritualitty in me that i knew was always there! fantastic!, they are playing here in scotland again soon! i cant wait!, i would love to see them in desert tho! with the massive starry skies!, beautiful dunes! i can dream! respect to everybody who appreciates the mighty tinariwen!
I am from india and I can understand the difficulties of the nomads of the desert. We have very similar people who are nomads of the Rajasthan Thar desert in india and whose life is filled with music and camels. The annual camel festival takes place at Pushkar in rajasthan is world famous.Their music is also very unique to the desert using folk string instruments and folk dances.Hope all cultures of the world live in harmony.

I've been in Morocco for a month and later Tinariwen came to Portugal, to my home town and I watched them play along with Vieux Farka Touré. And while we were in the show room you could feel the energy in the air. They're quite amazing. Thank you for posting the video.

Whats Morocco like to live in? Im 16, and im from the UK, would love to live there for a little while at some point. CERTAINLY gonna atleast visit.
RowanSpry 3 years ago
I think you should go visit first and then you make up your mind, 'cause I can tell you how beautiful I think Morocco and people from there are but it's my opinion and maybe we have different tastes.. But I think you'll love it :)

can you all stop this? peoples from north africa, middle east, they are all beautiful, they all make beautiful music, they all have a beautiful culture.
springbok37 4 years ago 6
Of course North African's are arabs.....im algerian and i speak....yep u guessed it ARABIC!
4r4biq 4 years ago
Not all north africans are arabs..
The Berbers are not Arabs, they are North African autoctone people..
Arabs invaded our coutry and colonized us all.
Of course now we are all mixed and that's good.
I love both cultures Arab and Imazighen.
p.s I'm Algerian too.
Peace.
bsloow 4 years ago 5
nope man.. I am sorry. read you history. you are eather an arab colonist or you deny your own berber culture. North african people are 99% of berber decent. that's where our culture come from! not from the arabs in the middle east. the only thing we have in commen is the religion and partly the language, only partly. go on and talk algerian with a real arab, he wont understand a thing!! so believe it or not you are most probably berber. read your historie :P

dude i dont even know what the question is.....?
4r4biq 3 years ago
i come from new zealand, our native people are the Maori, the majority speak english like me, does that make them and I english?
anarchycastro 3 years ago
dude you read history, cause when the arabs invaded the north african regions, there werent any big cultures, the berbers were few, and maybe there were some descendants of the fenician colonies, or descendants of the carthagean empire, or vandals, but they mixed with arabs, and adopted their culture (a lot of it) so i dont think that you could say that northern africa is 99 percent the descendant of berbers...

YahyaGhamudi 3 years ago
berber is no dialect , if it wasnt the arab colonisation of north africa, we would have been up there with the other nations ,arabs conquered us by the name of islam, they took over our land ,killed and repressed our people , the berber people ,wether targuis , kabyles , chaouis , chelhi...et j'en passes
and i thank my friend grandjoh for his comment, at least this guy is aware and knows something about history

this is what the french colonization taught you.
They succeeded to wash your brains indeed.

Hi,
I am from india and I can understand the difficulties of the nomads of the desert.
