  • I'm guessing this is training for aesthetic value not martial value. As a martial art; your timing is completely wrong and the jump bares no resemblance to the actual unsu jump. And I appreciate its easy to criticise. Yahara would slap you with his shinai for this performance:-)

  • you are not supose to say um after every tecknik

  • VERY noisy...TOO noisy. Fast movements too slow, jump nearly in slow motion. I would say that this kata is not suited for you, maby Sochin would be better.

  • To---------> karatefella

I saw a video of Yahara Sensei, cant really compare his Unsu to Milon's, not because of techniques but it was like old school Unsu versus new school Unsu, you like the old school I am assuming and I like the new school Unsu, we can argue about it, but at the end of the day both of them are from Shotokan.

I appreciate the comment, I had never seen Yahara Sensei.

  • Too slow

    Too noisy

Do the slow techniques slowly BUT NOT THAT SLOWLY.

The slow techniques do not make the fast techniques seem faster.

  • Good kata, not an easy kata to do even at a good level, Milon is still the God of this kata R.I.P., even better than Valdesi.

  • NO !

Mikio Yahara Sensei is the god of UNSU !

  • Rythm was ok, but last of the four-direction gyaku-tsukis, and the last jodan gyaku sotu-uke (reverse head-level outside block) had no focus. Also, the second gedan barai behind had no focus (you didn't finish the second stance cuz you rushed). Also, why do you do a closed-mouth kiai on every move?

  • Looks good, still things to fix but hey were not all perfect thats why we, as karate-ka strive for, perfection! your doin great man conqure your self and push on ward!

  • clearly very good. i am confused though becuase i learned it from john su he does it differently

  • The timming was good on Unsu such a difficult kata to get the timming of but embusen, the start and finish point were out of line at Dan Grade it is a poor example sorry

  • Good kata, and video training is definately the way to go these days. The people saying there is too much posing need to realize this is the way of WKF competition kata these days, especially when competing in a multi style event against say shitu ryu katas.

  • I agree with you big time!

  • I think people is always underestimating breathing techniques, sure you can breath in your own way, but not in a uncontrolled way.

Try to do your kata in a silent way and "explode" your ki in the kiai parts, let your karategi sound! OSS!

  • why are you making sounds for your self for every technic? I Havent really got that... karate are supposed to be quit exp. powerparts and the fast part and in the kiays not huuh!huhuh!huuuuuh! and like and not like breathing woth your noise like 120 dB when your going in to yoi,

  • Very nice, very fast. As llanosdesignz wrote, there shouldn't be so much posing. Staying too long in slow techniques. If you can do mikazukigeri in the jump, it will be perfect. :-) But still great kata, I want to do it as good as you.

  • give more on hips... emphasize the hips...

  • Work on your rythm, it's much to choppy. Work on ending your hands and feet in any movement at the same time. Too much posing as well. Way too much posing. I also get a sense that you're trying to be perfect, hence the posing. At a world class level, posing will certainly interfere with any placing.

    Good Luck.

p.s. You need to understand Kime a bit more.

  • Don't worry about what people think. Conquer yourself.Practice makes champion !!!Good luck.

  • Nice work.

I like the obvious concentration and balance you show.

-pogoskater is right but in order to "stick" it you need to fold your knee higher and more tightly.

-when you do the jump nad spin, try ot tuck you legs as you go up so the spin wil happen more quickly. you'll find yourself using less energy for the spin and more power for the jump.

  • Hm, if think it doesn't matter how you breath. It's jsut your personal style. Just a question: When did you learn it? Did you already where Sensei? I want to know when I have to learn it ;)

  • i'm not very sure when i actually learned it, but it definitely was after my first black belt...

and that's what i would suggest to you; there's enough to do until you "are" black...

  • @Ascarion1234 - The breathing is very important in Kata...to stabilise the core and to maximise strength in the moves. However it must be done correctly, and here it is not.

The grunting is unecessary and distracting. Strong exhales on strikes punches and kicks, and inhales on blocks would do the trick. BUT it was a good kata.

  • not bad, but i dont like that style of unsu, looks so robotic, not effortless... not smooth enough, super boring i think. But if thats the way you do it then whatever.

  • I wish I could do unsu that well. I'm working on it.

  • beim aufstehen nach den zwei mawashi geris am boden solltest du mal gucken dass du nicht den linken fuss nachziehen muss...ansonsten gibts nichts auszusetzen *daumen hoch*

  • Should be done a little faster but hell of a jump sir!

  • what do you mean hell of a jump? it was not done correctly. also, kiai on every execution? suggest he studies how sensei yahara performs this kata also posted here

  • Just my opinion, but, Yahara's unsu is not that impressive, at least technically. There are issues with balance, dachi, hara... If you'd said compare it to Michaël Milon then fair enough.

Have to agree with the comments on breathing, way too vocal. Physiologically, you increase peak muscle power when breathing, which is why you concentrate on breath control. Just breathe as forcefully as you can, rather than TRYING to make a noise.

  • Great job. Only comment I would make is we extend and stick the thrust kick a little more(at about 1:38 on the video)

  • thanks for the comments so far!

it's true: the slow parts are very slow, but that's just training; from my experience, one tends to be a lot faster at tournaments than in training...

as for the "sounds": that's the way we do kime in my dojo; there are top athletes in germany who are still noisier...

  • yes, each club or association has their 'noise' but i always try to use the 'hmm' or a 'hut' as that would give a better kime on each technique and will not be too loud either. Try that..

  • The grunts really detract form a pretty good kata here. If you are doing it just because top german atheletes do it, there's something not quite right. Kime comes from tanden, not throat. The JKA frown upon even loud breathing, this grunting shows nothing, and only takes way from the performance IMHO.

Slow is fine, but at points in your kata it comes to a dead stop, this is not correct kata flow IMHO.

Apart from that I enjoyed the performance, more please!

  • I never said I breathe like this *because* of the top athletes in my country (most of them are younger than my practicing karate); I do this because it's the way I do it, not saying there may not be a time to change it, though... (that would either be my sensei telling me to do so, or me actually experiencing being voted down at competitions because of my kime...) and, for the record, I know very well where the kime comes from, and i am pretty sure that i'm doing it the "right" way

  • I agree w/ rocky! Good kata and very good form, all the grunts hurt the overall performance. Breathe; get rid of the sound effects. Your kata is mush too good for that! I wish you the best on your journey...Osu!

  • Good job! I liked it. Now go out, compete, and put THAT vid on here - with all of your improvements (to compare) and hopefully with a 1st place trophy.

  • I agree with Tamita's comment about the extra sounds. Its one thing for a little noise from correct breathing, but it as it is its coming out like you have a mini ki ai at the end of every technique (which is inefficient for carrying power in the technique) also, make sure to include the pressing blocks during all 4 turns at the beginning of the kata. Right now you only have it at with the first gyaku tsuki.

  • This is correct. I know of one that was said have skipped 4 techniques because he did not show the 4 blocks. That was in a WTF skandinavic nationals. The gyaku tsukis will appear bigger and stronger if you do the blocks. Most of the time I see them it makes the change of direction look sharder.

  • your mom's a very boring kata

  • Not bad. The parts that are slow you're doing it very slow. Also don't make noise with you're mouth, do the kia's only. The noise in competition doesn't give more points (see the rules of organizations like the WKF).

  • a very boring kata
