  • Sadly looks to be a parts car...

    Retro

  • I had spoken with a family member and i got an answer for the backfire could u tell me what it could be for my steering to be making noise while turning

  • i have a question I have an 1991 Grand Marquis LS when I first start it..Its starts smoking from the back of the motor. Is there any ideas of what it could be..Its like oil smell smoke..It also back fires..Like popping..COuld that be from the crack i have by the converter and the Pipe I have H-Pipes.Thanks

  • @1coppler I have had a lot of trouble with the valve cover gaskets leaking on Ford engines...they will leak oil onto the exhaust manifolds and cause the smoke and burning oil smell. I'm not sure exactly what is causing backfiring as I haven't observed it on a fuel injected engine. It definitely would be good to get any exhaust leaks fixed though.

  • @retrochad When yours smoked did it smoke once you started it? And did it smoke if u ram the engine up a little? With the backfiring I think its a cylinder problem cause it was this one time I didnt engrease the idle up real high but i did that to see if the popping will go away. Then i let it go back down to reg. idle and then i turned it off. I happen to look under car and my passenger side calvalier was glowing up. But there is a crack right there when the pipe starts from the calvalier.

  • @1coppler that back fire could mean the timing is off a little

  • Heres what you should do, with the motor, replace the oil pump, and watever else the motor needs, but the tranny, get the car out to a drag strip or a highway, and hold the pedal to the floor and when it hits 85 MPH, it should jerk really hard, make horrible sounds, and shift into 3rd, and after this, ur trans should work fine

  • burn oil car.

  • Just use it as parts for ur '90 Grand Marquis.

  • I love those style Grand Marquises, I had an '89, hope you restore her :)

  • It's a beautiful car for a French , it's typicul Americain ! (excuse me if i m bad in english )

  • I couldn't tell if that was a compliment or and insult. :)

  • It's a compliment Kooly1 because in France the old cars haven't this look..

  • Oh Okay lol. Cheers

  • you bought a LEMON!!!

  • mabey a lemon because the previous owners did'nt maintain it.

  • The little things like oil changes if not on time can build up oil slug which can damage the oil pump.

  • You should buy a Cutlass Ciera like I do. It gets great gas mileage.

  • Hey Chad, what about combining your 90 and 91 parts wise so that you get one of them back in the road. Prolly your 1990 cause its an LS and your 91 is a GS.

  • It must have been outside first with the windows down for a couple of years.

  • drive train should be fairly cheap to get at a junk yard

  • What a beautiful car! Its amazing to think how much you paid for it in 98, but it was a good investment, that is if it didn't have all these problems. That dealership is still over in Fairview and I drive past it quite a lot!

  • I remember the Ford Taurus I had. The transmission has issues going from first to second. it would get up to about 25 mph and then, BANG! It went into second. Rebuilding the transmission was around 1700 bucks & the car was only at the shop for a day or so.One reason I traded the car about 2 years later. one reason was the trans seemed to be acting up again.

  • The carbed 351W was police issue. VV up until 1986, then 4bbl Holley.

Civilian Crown Vics got carbed VV until '83, then CFI until '86 when the changeover to SEFI happened(which you're 2 newer Marq's have). However, that's parsing it too much as far as swaps go. Use the factory motor mounts and any 302/351 will go into any of those cars easily. FMX/C6 is a better choice for duribility in a heavy car, either have to have SBF bell pattern.Trucks are good source for all of this.

  • I didn't know there was a 4V intake manifold for the 351w, I had heard there was one for 351 Cleveland. Also didn't know they were using Holleys from the factory...I had read about a Holley retrofit carb made to replace the VV's though.

Were the 351's on these using AOD too in 91?

Wonder if I would need to make up a drive line replacement somehow to accomodate a different type of transmission. I would just as soon have a standard but that might be tough logistically...

  • Plenty of aftermarket 4bbl intakes for a 351W, but factory is less common. The deck height is slightly different between early(about '69) 351W and all alter versions, intakes are correspondingly different. 351 used AOD.

Main mod needed to use different trans is to possibly shorten driveshaft. Fords are very easy to mix and match parts between...

  • I almost got that model of car when I was looking in the late 1990's. Ended up with a 93 Ford Escort. If anyone can get that basket case of a car back to excellent working condition again, it's you. I'll be tuning in for the progress.

    Mark

  • This model uses the AOD...the AOD-E is electronically shifted and came out in '93. The engine probably lost the oil pump driveshaft. It's a thinwall shaft that fits between the bottom of the distributor and top of oil pump. Debris can lock the pump up and twist the shft in two...then no oil pressure.Known to happen on 302/351 engines. That would make a nice sentimental project but not a profitable one..those cars go for about $500 here.

  • That happened to a buddies mustang. The pump shaft twisted and snapped

  • Thanks for the info...of course pretty much everything I have is for sentimental/historical value only hehe...I don't ever want to sell anything. I probably will try and pull out the engine and trans from this car sometime. I'd like to replace with a carbureted 351/C4 if I can find one (didn't some models of CrownVic's use 351/VV carb up till 91?)

  • yep police interceptors had a 4bbl holley 351 until '91. the 4.6 came out in 92.

  • Not really a whole ton of miles on it, wonder why there is no oil pressure

  • AODE*

  • The ADOE was notorious for having troubles, wearing out the bands used to drive 3 and 4, the first 2 gears are actual gears.

  • if it wasnt for the trans id keep it, but even i have my limits :s

  • You need to get rid of it since it is to far gone and find a better 1991 Mercury.

  • i know whats wrong..its a FORD lol

    such a nice car though

  • what a nice car =(

  • Man, looks like a lot of work to get that thing going, but seeing how you take such good care of your '78 Grand Marquis, I'm sure you'll get this thing running good.

It really shows how dusty it gets down south there too!

  • Thanks for your comments...probably an engine/transmission swap is in order. It really does get dusty! but that's better than the condensation/moisture that happens in a lot of places.

  • are those town car fenders on the back pasenger wheel wheels...thats bad if I know that, wheres his towncar?

  • These fender skirts are actually from my 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis...When I got the chrome wheels the tires were slightly wider and I had to remove the fender skirts so the tires would fit.

  • fireworks YEEHAW. still looks like a nice car

  • thats too bad. looks like it was a nice car.
