0:39 what the hell is that, you cant catch a real mai-geri kick(front leg push kick) like that, you should get out of the line of the attack, not just stand still and get kicked in the gut.
@MursuTheMan it's a kata. so, whether the techniques make sense or not, it's just performance competition. but besides, what would you do if you couldn't step out of the way?
1.04, that was awesome!! Iv recently joined a jujitsu/judo/aikido club which i think is goshin jitsu, really effective and enjoyable to learn, very different from a karate background.
The goshin jitsu is one of the katas that implements selfdefense on a very high level. the way you perform it it is very correct in sequence and techniques. But there is some room for improvement though. (luckily, how boring would it be if you wouldn't have anything more to improve and train? )
I can't see much kuzushi in the techniques. I think if you would show more disturbance of tori's balance in another video (or another demonstration) you could try and have your go at perfection!
This is one of the Judo kata - always performed in pairs. Yes it has elements that look like Tomiki Aikido. Tomiki was involved in the construction of this kata (he was 8th dan judo too), but this is a Kodokan Judo Kata. In Judo, Kata serve to demonstrate technique and principles involved in attack and defense. Kodokan Goshin-Jutsu was meant to be a kind of moderised version of Kime-no-Kata (the old kata of self defense).
This is kata....kata is not real! Those of you who don't understand that are the one's who are making the dumb comments. Kata teaches principal and mechanics. Randori is free play with another partner. Then you have Shiai which is the most realistic.
Don't want to be rude, but this is not Kata, you're right on the principle and forming the mechanics, but Kata is a solo study. These are forms 3,5,6,7,9. Learned at different ranks, to stress the importance of keeping yourself self and the opponent at a safe distance to not hurt themselves, notice as it goes on it turns from defending to submission. If i sounded like a jerk i apologize.
@Dismae True. I'll give you that last bit. In judo the proper free fighting (rather than the controlled free fighting of randori) is realistic cus although you can't strike, you don't have to hold back
Am I right in thinking that this is one of the kata that professor Tomiki either created or helped create? It is VERY similar, technique wise, to many of the kata techniques inherent in Tomiki Aikido. I know that there are only so many ways to execute a throw but the footwork, attacks and positioning are like Kenji Tomiki's signature. Anyone know the history? let me know
This is formal grading for 5th dan at the Kodokan in Toyko By the looks of it they where international students Tori had a good uke I say tori is 5th dan now Way to go text book
This is all well and good, but look at the attacker... he makes his move and then stands there waiting to be taken down. All very neat to watch, but in reality the attacker would struggle or make a counter move rather than just get thrown. I'm not knocking this video or the techniques, it's a good demo! :O) Just thought I'd point it out to people who might think real fights can be as easy as this to counter...
Not where i practice. My teacher tells you up front that he doesnt teach for sport or for art or for money. He has one goal, to make you as good at taking the other person down as possible.
Ive never once been in competition, but can assure you if someone takes a swing at me they'll be in the hospital hoping to regain the use of their arm...
repetition (READ: practice) is the mother of perfection.
I take Ju Jitsu myself and we too go through the moves in 'that' way... to get the mechanics for each technique perfect.
When you know something to that degree - it becomes something you don't think about you can just do, regardless of resistance.
To your point: LEOs , Doormen & prison officers are all careers that risk of attack is high; most of their training is based on jujitsu aikido & judo methods because they DO work when needed.
interesting video. i was handed a booklet with all the throws in a few weeks ago, and because i can no longer do any fighting for my gradings, i'm going to attempt this kata, along with nage, gonosen, and katame.
i don't suppose you have any vids on mifune kata do you?
There were some very nice wrist throws there :D starting to look a bit more like Goshin is incorperating aikido into its ranks, i know from practicing it the main contents involve Judo and joint locks but you rarely see displays with those forms of throws..... nice work :D
The Kata was developed by Kenji Tomiki Shihan, the first 8th dan of aikido under the founder who also was an 8th dan in the kodokan and its really as much aikido as judo, granted the version i learned in tomiki aikido is slightly different. Its a pretty old kata.
kata is not mentioned to show techniques in full speed in real fight scenario's. Kata is developed, to practice techniques untill a high level of quality has applied, with perfection as a goal. The techniques in kata's are realistic, but shown in a demonstraion form. When a high quality level is aproached, it's more easy to use these techniques as well in real life confrontations.
I wouldn't be inclined to call Kata boring - its just doesnt have the same speed and overall crowd pleasing nature of Shiai - however this is a particurly good example of Goshin Jitsu No Kata
Hermoso!
This is what I love about judo and traditional jutsu, any of these techniques could very easily be applied in a street fight or like I like to call them real fights.
The editing is very helpful. Thank you!

it's a kata. As for the "real fight" argument, nobody knew that better than Jigoro Kano, hence the importance of randori in Kodokan Judo.

Actually some techniques are very UNrealistic. Try them against a resisting opponent (like a friend, in relative safety) and see what happens
