  • With thinning and removal of excess branching we lightened the weight on the crotch of the tree. If one wanted to further strengthen this area, you would have to drill a hole through the trunk in that split area and insert a threaded rod with washers and nuts on each end to "bolt it together." Another technique would be to place props under the main branches on both sides. It is generally not a good idea to wrap and area like that with rope, etc. since they may be forgotten, girdling the tree.

  • wow, this appears to be a really old tree! Have you had it for a long time? So what did you end up doing with the major crack that almost split the tree? I would like to see a video on it as you give us a background and further info on that tree.
