Dude, believe it or not this is a traditional Hungarian dish. (eastern Europe) This is my favorite food in the entire world. We (Hungarians) eat it as a side to fish or just by itself.
I just made this for lunch, made a few changes. I ran my cottage cheese thru a few squeezes in a cheese cloth to make it kind of like mozzarella, in the middle of the dish I added some ground sausage and added a layer of aged cheddar cheese along the bottom followed by a simple red sauce made with a few ripe tomatoes I had.
I just made this tonight with a couple changes. I added a couple dashes of Worcestershire sauce and a couple of hot sauce to the sour cream mixture. Then I added some parmesan cheese to the cottage cheese - plus I add pepper to everything. You definitely need the salt with the sour cream. It was very yummy!
I'm going to try this in the next days. I'll upload a video of it and send you a message if you like:) I hope it will be delicios like the apple cake last time ;)
wow this looks great! The only change I would make; instead of using egg noodles I would use seashell pasta or penne pasta. I think it would hold the sauce better.
never would I have thought of this recipe ... but oh dang, does it ever look good!!!! I have all the ingredients on hand right now, so I'm thinking.... this would be GREAT for lunch today!! Thanks so much!
mm never heard of this dish before, sounds interesting. i always put my bacon in the oven. it maintains more crispness and while it's in the oven I can prep other things. the only time i cook bacon in a pan is when i need to render the fat to make a sauce or something another. making my own spin of this dish. render the fat, saute chopped garlic and green onions, reduce with wine and stock, then ad the sour cream to make a sauce.
looks so simple and delicious great side dish can't wait to make this and OH! I made your bananas foster version it was perfect! sometimes bananas foster recipes can be too rich but your version was just right..thanks so much
I would replace the noodles with rice or potatoes. Also to anyone reading this low fat cottage cheese doesnt really have much of a flavour(at least by itself I know), Id try it with a regular kind, not sure what cottage cheese freitasex used here. The bottom of the pan could be covered with bacon as well before placing the noodles/rice/potatoes in. I've done that bacon at the bottom of the pan with meat loaf before it was so good the potatoes were given the taste off meat lol.
@ShrivyShrivey The bacon was raw though when it was under the raw meat loaf so it all cooked together so not sure if it would have to be cooked before putting it under the noodles/rice/potatoes and into the oven.
Looks yummm, But as you asked.. onion, maybe spring onions would be nice. A little garlic, sauteed in the bacon fat and mixed into the noodles with the sour cream.... I was also thinking maybe some basil leaves sliced and mix with the noodles.. So many other ideas. This is a wonderful base recipe for many variations. Thanks!!!
Oh crap. Guess I'm not going to lose any weigh this summer watching your vids ;) Could you post up ,,, maybe a salad, something light and perfect for hot summer ?
By the way, you hit the spot with this recipe - from where I come from (Poland) a salted maccaroni with curd cheese and crispy bacon is considered as comfort food. Cheers Mike! 5 stars for that!
Reminds me of a one layer lasagna -- I could imagine adding some sauce, herbs or extra cheese. Maybe ground beef? Looks great as is though, thanks again!
You asked for suggestions - I always like mushrooms and garlic in pasta but in this case might also want some parsley or cilantro for color. What were your suggestions?
Hmm.. wonder how some diced sun-dried tomatoes sprinkled on top would work with that... seems it would blend in with the whole sour and tart thing between the sour cream and cottage cheese.
Maybe some herbs mixed in with the sour cream and pasta as well.
Good stoner food!

you can drop the macaroni/spaghetti on the pan when your bacon bits are almost done. same with the cottage and some herb. no oven required
