Every piece of precious metal and every drop of fuel and oil and every dollar and every coin on the planet all together is not worth One human life. This is just wrong. A better future is not something we can expect big industry to bring, its something we will have to work on individually. Permaculture and Organic gardening are the corner stones in the new civilization we must create.
The fossil fuels on earth are finite. Consumption of energy has gone up and will be continuing up as the human population increases. Natural gas will probably run out first then gasoline then coal. I doubt that will be tommorrow though lol. Humanity will develop alternatives, reduce consumption, or run out; that much is clear. What IS greatly in question is the magnitude of climate change all this consumption will have on the ecosystem. It will happen; it's only a matter of degree now.
@magicpet natural gas is not facing any kind of shortage whatsoever anywhere on the planet. It too is renewable from biomass even if not in the quantities found underground today. Coal is in no shortage: coal is almost as common on this planet as sand. The rare earth elements used for turbines (wind, geothermal) are also more rare than oil at this time so be careful what you wish for: once they're used up it's back to WOOD windmills and very primitive hydro-power pumps
@goodinohio not everything, just a lot of things. We need to make better use of 1800's level technology that was indeed very green - we didn't have excess energy to burn nor fancy metals refined & alloyed, & some worked out very well. Why not build more with wood? Then recycle that wood back into wood products or wood-chips for earth later? Seriously, think of what we'd save on building. Why not use hemp for paper & various rope + wood products (other than boards) ?
