i just heard the "red" album for the first time. what the fuck is wrong w/ rock music these days? it seems like everyone is playing the same riffs and making the same songs. it's so boring. the "red" album fucking blew me away. the production of it as well as the musicianship. king crimson, please come back!
@thevoid99 people eventually tired of being blown away by musicianship and high production values and wanted a volksmusic, and Punk was born. It's All Good
@lauriecolson have you heard punk rock lately or what is now called punk? it's terrible. plus, i'm starting to dislike rock music these days as i've been going back more towards the 70s and 80s underground rock.
@GoDamnWeird Yeh the lyrics on this & other seminal versions are not the same as the studio cut. The 'Red' album lyrics are just sublime. Some of the best rock lyrics I've ever heard. Also hard to understand the words in these earlier versions. LOL - like Wetton did'nt like them & was half slurring.
@menrathu I like King Crimson. I don't listen to them alot and i dont know alot of their songs or any of their members but they're definately talented and unique.
I love the division of labour in this performance (unfortunately out of sync, but hey). Thrip plays keyboard while the violinist fiddles and then the violinist gets on the other keyboard while Thrip takes up the guitar. My favourit album is in the Court of the Crimson King. The instrumental section in 21st Century Schizoid Man is marvelous!
THE GREAT DECEIVERS(KING CRIMSON tribute band) play on Friday, January 20th, 2012 at 10pm at The Universal Bar and Grill in North Hollywood near Universal City. Don't miss them. They play songs like Starless, Lark's 2, Exiles, 21st, 3 of a Perfect Pair, Vrooom Vrooom and Fracture!!!
...i do remember this show...i was there somewhere around while they were shooting ...souvenirs souvenirs....The show was called MELODY and the first band to come was.....Genesis.
When Fripp's playing that guitar note repeatedly and staring into space, I'm somehow reminded of Jack Nicholson typing the same sentence thousands of times in The Shining...listening to evil instructions from a satanic voice in the head.
@itskarmabxtch This is only one song from the Melody TV show. The entire king Crimson performance runs 29 minutes and can be watched here: /watch?v=eDxnJrzYIj0 and it is also on the Red 40th anniversary DVD.
My Favorite song "Startless" of KC, despite the fact that they have other awesome songs!!! Besides David Bowie, KC is the most innovated rock band ever!!! The Best Music at the end of the 60's, during 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000's.
Clearly, IMO, Bruford was influenced by Art Blakey. Seeing this live proves it, without question. Kudos to Bruford; as you knew how to learn and take from the best.
was really into King Crimson hard in my young days had tons of there albums only a few remain some stolen some broken . never forget you Crimson my last remaining albums are treasures to me .
I wonder when this was done in relation to the release of Red. I always thought KC had broken up by the time Red came out, or at least David Cross was out.
David Cross was fired immediately prior to Red being recorded, but 'Starless' had been a stage staple for some time. The violin line was replaced by guitar on the studio version.
Red features one track with Cross (Providence), which was recorded on the final tour, prior to Cross' firing.
no no yes yes best ever no not even close sucks bollocks bring back punk prog is for suckers robert fripp is my daddy music to make babies to stellar!
@piratepete61 It didn't have a specific sound. One could sample any instrument/noise on the tapes operated by the keys, thus nobody owned it's sound or usage or style of play in any way. I think bobo meant KC expressed the music in a more sophisticated way using that particular instrument.
@BravoAlphaLimaJR calm down, calm down ;p. but indeed, i should have added some smiling face to my remark to ensure that it is to be considered lightly. i didn't feel like arguing, but now when i read my own comment it doesn't seem like a joke either.
i think it's just worth noting that the beatles were first (in popular music) - so very nice of them to open the gate.
@odolany Actually Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues was the one who introduced the Mellotron to The Beatles, and subsequently they used the instrument on “Strawberry Fields Forever.
@Iconoclast444 many thanks for that info. do you happen to remember where it is taken from? it's not i don't believe you of course, but i want to avoid spreading "unconfirmed" "gossip" myself.
@odolany It was played on The Moody Blues 1967 album "Days of Futures Past", most notably on their hit "Nights in White Satin". Although Pinder of the Moody Blues had introduced the instrument to the Beatles, John Lennon had bought one in mid 1965, and had used it on a recording before any other popular artists, using it on The Beatles' 1966 song "Tomorrow Never Knows", a year before the Moody Blues had recorded with it.
@ Zappafan1980...No offense taken....I'm a little long in the tooth to have my ego invested in Youtube posts....However, you're absolutely correct - there are so many brilliant artists that have contributed to the genre....(Zappa being very high on the list)......I was simply getting nostalgic with a glass of wine and some happy memories regarding King Crimson....I 'm sorry that my post gave the impression that I felt King Crimson was the only band that broke this barrier......far from it
