i know what you explain in the video. theres is nothing we did to get saved, but God who made it all. so what does the parable of the prodigal son want to tell us?it says "and when he came to himself".what does that mean? who made him realize he sinned against his father? the son came back to his house and the father never went behind him, forcing him to come back. what does it mean "repent and believe"? what happens when a person dies without hearing the gospel? there are too many questions :S
@andrewwk6 you know the Lord Jesus gave us the parable of the prodigal son long before he walked on the earth. read Hosea and you will see how the Lord reached that prodigal son. another place to go to see this is in Psalm 107.
who made him realize he sinned? there is only One by which anyone is ever convicted of sin: the Spirit of truth, the Holy Spirit (John 16:8-9)
Though it is not directly indicated in that parable, the Holy Spirit makes this clear throughout the rest of Scripture.
@andrewwk6 the purpose of the prodigal son must be remembered is not a 'how-to' about salvation. rather, like the parables that came before it, the purpose, the message in this parable is to speak to the joy at those who were lost being found, even they who were once dead and is now alive again. it is a parable of rejoicing at the salvation of the lost-of which we, like that brother, are not naturally inclined to do.
@HosannaHM - Thanks very much. I did not attend seminary. All of my training was church-based ... you know, the way it's supposed to be. As Dr. Greene once stated, "The reason seminaries sprang up was because the church stopped doing its job." So, I served a four year internship at a church in Los Angeles, followed by three years here in Middle Tennessee, lots of reading and studying, a year and half as an interim pastor, and ordination in May of 2000.
This is what always gets me bummed. I always thought I was a Christian, call out to Him day and night but no response. And soon I lost my drive. I don't only care about my salvation, but also am sad that the vast majority of people I care about won't taste salvation. There's no hope for anybody save for those few elect. What kind of good news is that we're bon to be condemend?
@TubeheadSkinnymike you would not have called out to Him if u did not believe in Him. people who dont believe in Him laugh at the Gospel (it is foolishness). have a read of Romans 10. All who call on the name of the Lord will be saved.
@Scottles293 Thanks for your reply, but what you just said just goes against the logic in the video. Or do the two align somehow and I'm missing the point?
@TubeheadSkinnymike the video is correct, men are dead in sin and must be born again to even see the Kingdom of God. Jesus said 'all that the Father gives me will come to me, and the one comeing to me i will in no wise cast out.' The natural man (unregenerate) doesnt accept the things of the Spirit of God (the Word of God/ the Gospel) because they are spiritually decerned. Why would you care about these things but someone else would laugh and wouldnt care at all?
@TubeheadSkinnymike So unless "Good news" is good 4 every individual, Its not good 4 those it was intended? To your other comment; Does God owe them hope? In scripture Hope is the description of faith which is a FIXED CONFIDENCE not a wish(Heb. 11:1) According 2 "free will" theology this can never be had.2 them God can only save IF U decide 2 let Him&even if U do your "hope" is still not fixed, cause who knows what you'll decide tomorrow&then U'll be lost again (Continued in next comment)
@TubeheadSkinnymike I am sad 4 the vast majority of mankind Too. But above my limited understanding, & sadness, I have confidence that whatever the Lord does IS right, including not dying for them, sending to hell, whatever Do I now hold God 2 my standards of justice & only believe what I see just, And if I can't dont agree, then say that the scriptures must not be saying it, & so throw out or twist or change some of the text of scripture to make them fit my reasoning. No.
Romans 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon ALL men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon ALL men unto justification of life.
1 John 2:2 And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the WHOLE world.
@jimhelbert Rev 21:8 "But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur, which is the second death."
So then Christ says sinners will be condemned, which means His sacrifice was meaningless for them? What about John 6:39? John 10:28-29? Christ must be referring to all TYPES of men.
As for 'world', what about John 7:7 , John 15:19 or James 4:4?
@jimhelbert The argument&emphasis Rom.5 is that there was1 act from Adam & one from Christ there are no multiple sacrifices as Rome teaches. All(Pas in Greek can mean collective individual, or types/kinds or type/kind within a group. Context/ whole of scripture determines meaning. Scripture teaches every individual received Adams sin. But it teaches only believers are justified. Adams sin equally damns all individuals.Christ atonement equally is its remedy thats all. Not that he gives it 2 all.
@jimhelbert Propitiate= 2 satisfy.Christ satisfied forever by 1 act(Heb 10: 12-14) The Fathers wrath on those 4 whom He died by Father pouring it out on Him instead.Matt 1:21, John 10 :11-16 tells U whom He came 2 propitiate.Verse 26 says "U do not believe because U R not My Sheep. Verse 16 is what John is teaching the Jews in 1 john 2:2, not just the sins of believing Jewish sheep but the sins of all believing sheep of the whole world. Hell is the wrath of God.People in it were not propitiated
We Preach the Gospel because all has been called. Romans 10:13-14 for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?
@jimhelbert Romans8:30 says those He calls to salvation He justifies, So are all individuals justified? Rom.8 has 2 groups. Those according 2 the Spirit& those who R according 2 the flesh(Regenerate &Unregenerate) First He compares them. Then He states "Those who R in Christ" "according 2 the Spirit" submit. Those who R not do not, R not able 2, & CANNOT please God Then He turns back 2 Those "whom the Spirit of God indwells" 4 the rest of the chapter. (Continued in next comment)
@jimhelbert It isTHESE He speaks of in 9-39. 29-33 whom He called 2 salvation. Those who R called do call upon the Lord & only them. Now U can read 10. All R called 2 account, all are commanded 2 repent in order 4 God 2 display His Choice & His work in either Granting them repentance or hardening them. There are many times God requires from all individuals what He does not grant them all (BE YE PERFECT) in order 2 show His righteousness, their guilt, their inability,& His purpose, plan, & power
@all4Hisgloryalone Thanks for that, then why do preachers like Paul Washer say that only 10-15% of Americans are saved as if it's our fault? If I'm getting you right, salvation is only up to and done by God. And I don't understand the logic of creating all of these human beings and letting the roam free when the vast majority of them will perish without hope. Like you said, we have limited understanding and cannot comprehend, but does it mean all we ever think about are evil thoughts?
I have watched this video last night. It has troubled me all night and most of the morning. The issue I have with this teaching is it denies the work of Jesus Christ our Lord. It makes light if not totally disregards what God sent his Son to do. The Bible clearly teaches man has a choice. Jesus was always God's plan for salvation. We are sent out to preach the Gospel to all. Because man has a choice to make. I will say I don't know all, and my comment is made out of Respect Thank You
@jimhelbert #1 He & verses read did nothing but teach& explain it is alone the work of Christ#2 Video tells exactly what God sent His Son 2 do, 2 ACTUALLYSAVE!#3 Bible nowhere teaches man's choice part of God's predestination, election,choice#4 Jim's videos have always taught "Jesus was always God's plan for salvation" #5 "We R sent out 2 preach gospel because man has a choice 2 make"? No. Bible =we preach it 4 it is God's SOVEREIGNLY CHOSEN MEANS by which He saves His elect & judges the rest.
@all4Hisgloryalone Maybe I heard it wrong. The way I heard it was that God had already chosen his elect to be saved. He said God did everything and the chosen had nothing to do not even believe. So those who were chosen to be saved will be saved no matter what. If that is true why do we have to preach the gospel? Would those chosen to be saved be saved even if they have not heard the gospel?
@jimhelbert #1 Yes Ephesians:4-14 #2The elect believe because they R reserved 2 be& then in time actually "ARE" born of God therefore when scripture saysUmust believe it is saying those who R saved do believe. Read John 6 and 10 to see what scripture says why people do & dont believe.#3We preach, as stated before, because it is God's SOVEREIGNLY CHOSEN MEANS by which He saves His elect& judges the rest.#4 No U make logical fallacy. If Chosen then God chose them so He Does send His gospel 2 them
@bernsber Romans 10:9 in context is Paul saying this to Christians. The other part of the context is that in Ancient Rome at the time, Roman Soldiers were ordered to kill Christians who confessed Jesus Christ as Lord, not Caesar. That is the power and faith in this verse, that if you confessed Jesus is Lord, you would lose your life. This verse has been SO warped to come to mean as something like decisional regeneration. But yeah, I hope that helps Bersber.
@nuttyjaydee123 And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD: Remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall. My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me. This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. Lamentations 3:18-24
@bernsber If you confess (if you are a professing Christian), if you actively confess that Christ saved you, then this is evidence that God saved you, calling you to faith, giving you life, bringing a desire to actively confess salvation. In other words, if you confess, it means that God has finished the work in you. Therefore, confession is an after-effect of something that has already been completed. Confession doesn't save, it evidences.
@bernsber a comparative verse: John 3:16 tells us that 'whosoever believes'. notice it doesn't say 'whosoever CHOOSES to believe. that belief is a matter of fact. if your mouth is able to honestly say from the heart: Jesus is Lord, it is only possible because faith is present in you. Paul wasn't writing this to unbelievers remember, but to believers. the purpose revealed here is in the comforting work of the Spirit to those that are being saved. it is the word of assurance to them.
@bernsber another example i would give you is in 1 Peter 1:1-9 with verse 7 being the crux of it:
That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
In the analogy given, like that gold, which was still gold before fire was applied to it; that faith which is tried was the same faith before it was put through trials.
@bernsber God who gives us faith, knows what he has given. the trial of our faith isn't to prove to God that we have faith. the trial of our faith is to prove to us that what faith God has given to us will indeed endure forever. it will be seen to be that kind of faith which Habakkuk was able to sing about in his closing prophecy. it is that kind of faith which Jeremiah was able to thank the Lord for in Lamentation 3.
@bernsber when we hear the stories of those who had faith through remarkable circumstances, it is an error to attribute it to the effort of that saint to have faith in and of himself. their ability to speak gloriously of their faith in the Lord has everything to do with the power of God proving his promise that nothing shall separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. this kind of faith will declare:
@bernsber Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. Can you explain Romans 10:9 to me?
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
