I'm guessing people haven't read the interview with Avril regarding 'Girlfreind'. She wanted a chant anthem to blast out when she plays live on tour, and the biggest chant anthem most know is 'Mickey', so thats basically the song she rewrote. All the elements that make it sound similar, phat guitars, big drum beat and cheer leader chant is meant to sound the same. If makes you want to chant like you would to 'Mickey' then Avril achieved her goal, that's the entire point she wrote Girlfreind for

Jeez, artists have been sampling each other, ripping off each other, and imitating one another since the beginning of time. No big news flash here. As a matter of fact, "Girlfriend" isn't even the first hit song to have greatly imitated (if not outright ripped-off) "Mickey." Listen to Run-DMC's song "It's Tricky," and you'll notice the same thing. Peace.

No offense but I'm pretty sure it was done on purpose. People "sample" all the time. In the song "S.O.S." Rihanna samples "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell, in "Fantasy" Mariah Carey samples "Genius Of Love" by Tom Tom Club & let's not forget the most famous case of all when Vanilla Ice sampled Queen's "Under Pressure". Nostalgia is a pretty good marketing scheme. Besides maybe Avril liked "Hey Mickey".

This is only because the tempo is different. It's the same beat to a different speed and amplification. Even made fun of in saterday night live; trust me its not like beats to new songs haven't been ripped off old songs. Case in point: "Hung Up" by Madonna to an ABBA beat; "The Beat goes on" by Britney Spears; etc.
