it's the kahuna at skatepark of houston. check out TexasStyleSkateboardingDOTcom our online zine has a few and i'll post more of bachman with the blue/clown phases eventually, there is footage in the Texas Style 2 dvd we sell on the site.
Hey, Innovationsk8......It's me jeff C....can you remember? I skated at the home of the clown ramp in dallas back in the day when you still have skate shop in Arlington, Tx. Anyway, it great to see this vedio of the all Texas Style from j. Phillis, C. Johnson, Dan Wiles and all those local skates. Take care.
The Kahuna was huge indeed. Seems like it was on the site of the old Texas Pipeline? Anybody know? This footage looks like a Shut Up & Skate contest around '85 or so. Thanks for the memories.
The ramp was a trip to skate...it was 3' off the ground & when you looked down riding close to the edge it looked tall so you had to pay attention to the ramp cause the bottom and other side came up quick. It got sold to some guys in Austin although I'm due the rest of the money for about 4 years now...typical for skateboarding industry. Craig's dreadlocked modified helmet was great...he just happened to get back in time to do the six flags demo...I think he came right from the airport.
I bought my first few boards from Innovation Skate Shop. I remember the Six Flags demo...CJ stunk to high hell that day (skated great...smelled AWFUL). Had a hole in the top of his helmet for his dreads...so cool.
Jeff Phillips ruled. Had a skatepark in TX early on...and I guess the fallout from the boom in the 80s drove him to suicide. If only he could have held on a couple of years. We definitely miss him...Last I saw, the blue trailer ramp was hanging out at a RV storage spot in A-town.
Great to hear from past customers, hope you're still rolling around. Too bad it doesn't upload clean to youtube...gotta compress it to fit their settings.
33 and recently back into it...the Denver area has so many great parks and some really nice pools. Everything I dreamed about while I was skating behind strip malls and hoping for a random ditch to be dry.
Next time I'm in A-Town, I will certainly be stopping by the shop.
i moved to H-town...more ditches, park w/ bowl, and surf. i heard denver was good. enjoy! if you're headed this way let me know and i'll get you some directions.
There's some great footage here. The Kahuna footage (Craig's huge indy channel), Danforth demo-ing, Groho in a pool, and Jeff Phillips anywhere... those were the days, I remember them well. See my photo montage video.
Aaah, I remember that demo thing that Danforth was at. It at the Arlington convention center. The wooden ramp wasn't finished for the start of the demo (but they had this mobile metal taco ramp - you can see it behind the wood vert ramp - that Danforth was skating a bit until the demo started.) Then, I guess the wooden ramp sucked, because the pros weren't going nuts or anything. They were sort of lazy about the entire thing. Still, a good time none the less.
The ramp delay sucked-home depot didn't deliver the wood the night b4 like they were contracted to and didn't even make it early on the day; a major headache trying to get the event to go off on time. all the pros i talked to said the ramp was good. the ramp was wood and backyard size 8', so not as big and fast as the kahuna or the clown ramp. they didn't appear lazy to us..those guys skate hard! The other ramp was the u shaped ramp in the six flags demo. Texas and Alva boys rocked.
I remember screaming with my friends "Mike Hernandez, Skate!" to get him to go with the pros. At least, I think that is what I remember his name was. That was a loooong time ago. :)
yeah that's the right guy...don't know where he's at now. His friend Brian came in the shop about 5 years back and had started to skate again, but don't think he new either.
what contest was that at the blue ramp? what year?

Watchin' this also reminds me how the Texas Skaters always ruled the slides, frontside lapovers & Boneless Ones. Fearless, truly fearless.

That was a huge ramp. I remember it with no fondness.
These guys killed it as they did anything they were offered.
