  • He's no genius.. he just hit the nail on the head for fucking sure. This blew me away and its comforting to know that you're not alone.

  • Lawrence Welk was a great musician. So was Liberace. That doesn't mean I want to hear them interrupt Iggy Pop's monologue. In my opinion Mogwai make music that appeals to pretentious hipster try-hards. I'm about as far away from giving a shit about their supposed musical prowess as anyone could be.

  • @kartob33 How is it ruining Iggy's Monologue? And you're right, Mogwai is not fit to scrub Iggy's bathroom. They are fit to be some of the greatest musicians on this planet.

  • that poor kid. i'm happy he sobered up and pulled through.

  • No way peter gzowski! I live in his building hahaha

  • iggy pop is a shitface

  • The essense of this song is "fuck labels", another very good "fuck labels" song is "come together' by primal scream.

"tonight in this program you will hear gospel, and r&b and jazz, all those are just labels, we know that music is music".

  • seems like everyone wanted to be henry rollins back in 1980

  • if he didnt do those stupid adverts i would have taken him seriously. sell out same as johonny rotten with his butter 2 visionaries who capitulated!

  • Would be good if he didn't say that punk rock was about satanism so sad

  • he didnt say thats what it was, he says that the term was used by peeps who took it to mean that

  • I am starting a post/rock post/punk band in Vancouver

drop me a line Jonny Cashmore @ myspace.

  • would be pretty interested...but i'm living in germany xD

  • The very fact that you refer to the genre as post-rock exposes your faggoty poseur bitch nature.

  • Thanks for your so blunt "I am a fucking stupid American moron" comment. Like all Americans; fat and idiotic as you are; you have truly enlightened me with your reasonable and well thought out comment.

But as I mentioned before...what would I expect from a fat, stupid, arrogant piece of shit, who thinks the "Superbowl" is culture?!?.......

  • You're still a poseur and a faggot. Mogwai would probably agree with me on that lol.

  • @JonnyCashmore the fuck. not all americans are like that. there actually is a rare some of us that dont give a shit about the superbowl. watch what you say because your being pretty ignorant right there yourself love.

  • Wow, look, they have rednecks outside of the US! Hey, thanks for being the model of a bigoted fuck! And you, talking about reasonable well thought out comments.

  • Well done on the synch job.

  • Thank you Iggy.....

  • Dude this is awsome

  • Yes ,it is!!! J aj ja haha Love ya bruder!

  • does anybody know where i could find the words to this whole quote?

  • You can watch the whole interview if you search youtube for: 'iggy pop interview'

  • @komoru

hahaha yes i have the whole interview, but since iggy pop is an east-coast american (new york i believe), peter gzowski was canadian, and i'm french so all these accents are pretty not that simple for me.

i understood the most part of this 9-minute itw but i'd want to find the words to understand the rest of it eventually!!

  • I like to toast my toast with an open flame..

  • IgGy S@yS iT -(A)-LL.............

  • viva mogwai

  • Iggy is a very smart guy actually. He is just a total narcissist which makes him seem crazy. The crowd are just being told when to laugh, clap, cry etc so they do not really mean a thing. Iggy is a Lou Reed of sorts and he is as important and appreciated in music as any other band or performer that is associated with changing music. David Bowie is no idiot and he saw Iggy's RAW POWER!

  • and they were also lovers so that helps too

  • @mouldeck Lovers though? Nah they might have done coke and fucked so much pussy that they may have said what the hell and crossed streams for the thrill like everything else they did but they weren't in love man.

  • lol....weird. some of it makes sense...but you know some of the things he says are from whatever drug(s) he's on.

  • @buttdread the music makes me feel sorry for him, because the crowd laughs and doesn't understand and the crowd cheers but they still don't understand.

  • pure narcissm

  • @ManFromMelbourne why would you say something like that? Iggy himself is NOT overrated. He is a true punk rock rock and roll legend His music is not all it is cracked up to be. However the stooges fuckin rocked harder than the Ramones. Iggy Pop waaaay more punk than those pussy Sex Pistols.

  • I really don't get why people dislike this Iggy statement. In fact, he is absolutely correct in what he said, you must aknowledge that, regardless of his drug habits.

IMHO, Gzowski haven't done his homework: if he knew the smallest bit 'bout Iggy, he wouldn't have tried to label his music.

  • go look up some Bill Hicks videos and then speak again ;)

  • M..

  • is that iggy pop?

  • Yes, I think !!

  • the stuff hes cumin out with here is awesome, but wtf happened i seen him on telly doing a life insurance commercial

  • It's not as though he needs the money fgs.

And then there's John Lydon on butter adverts here in the UK; the punks sold out, the hippies sold out- can nobody keep true to their beliefs?

  • artstuX: I will keep true to my beliefs if you will. Let's make a bet on it! First person to sell out pays the other oh, maybe, 100,000? It works well cuz effectively the first person to lose will have that kind of money to throw around! I promise I'll die before I lose the bet. Seriously. :)

  • Only people who didn't know they were in a genre.

  • Comment removed

  • Stella called it.

  • need artists with soul/meaning/passion

too bad they're not around anymore. :<

  • Oh they'll appear again.

This whole ipod twitter 2000's shitty generic culture is a shit filter. You'll see very different people come out the other side of this generation, while the rest are still waggling behind.

  • Comment removed

  • Brilliant! Been waiting for someone to this.

    TVM!

  • Oh you're right!! I so forgot the basic premise that some people can be deemed invalid in existence!!! You're so much better than him! He doesn't have anything interesting or reasonable to say, he's actually a douche. Thank you BlaculasSmellyFro for correcting my misconceptions. I feel that with just a little more of your wisdom I could reach enlightenment!

  • @yarglog hell hot damned:)

  • this is our punk rock.

  • why is it that every time somebody hears something they agree with they say the person who said it was a genius? the only difference between you and iggy is that he's on t.v.

  • @shizoy word. Kill your idols

  • he reminds me here a lot of tim leary. like one against the millions fighting to get his way because he is convinced that its the right way. the stooges rock... go look for gimme danger, dirt and search and destroy.

  • Iggy Pop is the best

  • Word

  • Brilliant

  • my bad...

  • No sir, I think 'tis YOU who "dont" know shit.

He was defending Punk Rock music and the listeners OF Punk Rock music.

You need to shut your lips and learn!

  • He just composed a new song right there and there

  • Wow.

  • Yes, I understand.

  • That was fucking awsome. I did'nt realize that was Iggy until I read the top right. You can tell that he's pure genious in the making with every word that he says. Calculated or from the heart. Memorized or waiting to happen. A whispered riot on the mainstreams outlook on punk. Pure Geniuos. "Do you understand what I'm saying sir?" You can tell by Peter's face that clearly, he does not. Long live Punk Rock.

  • Brilliant...Honesty!

  • musical innovation

  • Very nicely done. !:-)

  • i never knew it was iggy pop talking!

    awesome

  • daummm . this guys deep

  • he eats a Raw organic vegan diet

    watch vids by

    LIFE REGENERATOR

  • Zap Rowsdower is the canadian chuck norris!

    Btw this song rocks!

  • Yeah once met Norris back in '88. Nice guy. Beautiful hair.

  • This reminds me of a band called Austin T.V. from Mexico..Give them a try...but Mogwai is flawless...

  • i hate when people dont sit and listen to somebody answering an important question....their just laughing. fuckin A

  • AMISADAI PUNK

  • im a dillettante....i like to try all differnet types of music....except most american "pop" and "rnb"

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, I'm pretty sure he doesn't like dillettantes.

  • full interview here watch?v=1-WxFyuHsbE

  • very powerfull iggy..

that's how musicians have to feel

  • craaazy shit i love how we can express this through music...what an interview..

  • kickass!

  • You clearly don't know what he means by satanism

  • then explain cuz im atheist no satinist and i wanna know what he means by that cuz that confused me

  • @blackhorsepoetry Read the Satanic Bible by Anton LaVey

  • what did he mean? i dont get it

  • @riseofravens He meant that there are lots of people who can't really understand the passion put into art and music and that the artists work just as hard to create it and put their sweat and time into it as great scientists and other hard workers.

  • c'mon iggy, satanism was thrown on punks by the parents.

i've never met a satanic punk.

most of them are far to drunk to conduct any kind of ritual, and far too open minded to conform to any religion.

  • hes saying labelling the music as PUNK was a bad term, because at the time it was a derogatory word towards the makers of the music. He thinks its satanic that people label it

  • c'mon iggy, satanism was thrown on christians by the black metallers.

i've never met a satanic christian.

most of them are far to "good" to conduct any kind of ritual, and far too close minded to conform to any thing but christianity,

  • "punk" was at one time, synonymous with words like scum and hustler, and is dillitante another word for people who listen to bob dylan? like dylanoid, idk

  • Dilettante means somebody who follows the arts with passion. So that was a positive comment.

  • Actually, it's a term for someone involved in an art who is only casually involved or who only dabbles. It's a negative thing.

  • I messed up. Realized that too late. Regardless, I'll take Iggy's opinion over any other musicians ever.

  • Insane <3

  • breathtaking...

  • very cool.

  • It's great how Iggy pulls that taking head/suit (Peter Gzowski) into a REAL moment when its obvious the underlying intent was to marginalise and condecend to Iggy in the name of sensasinalism.

  • James Newell Osterberg, Jr

  • no, 'sir' didn't have a clue about what he was saying... hehe . checkout my main vid and see the 2001 update, there's no blood or guts but those 'young men' are still doin it

  • when I'm in the grips of it I don't feel pleasure and I don't feel pain, either physically or emotionally. Do you understand what I'm talking about? Have you ever felt like that? When you just couldn't feel anything and you didn't want to either. You know? Like that? Do you understand what I'm saying sir?"

  • PART 2

it's a term that's based on contempt, it's a term that's based on fashion, style, elitism, satanism and everything that's rotten about rock'n'roll. I don't know Johnny Rotten but I'm sure... I'm sure he puts as much blood and sweat into what he does as Sigmund Freud did. You see, what sounds to you like a big load of trashy old noise is in fact the brilliant music of a genius, myself . And that music is so powerful that it's quite beyond my control and ah...

  • For those interested in what he is talking about:

    PART 1

"I'll tell you about punk rock: punk rock is a word used by dillitante's and ah... and ah... heartless manipulators about music that takes up the energies and the bodies and the hearts and the souls and the time and the minds of young men who give what they have to it and give everything they have to it and....

  • Thanks for telling us what he's saying

  • you can find the lyrics on google anyway:P

  • post comment? more like post rock!

  • post traumatic stress disorder.

  • Best interview ever!!

  • how so.

  • Dude... Martin Luther King Jr was Civil rights activist... JFK... who knows what he could have been

  • thats too good

this is up there with martin Luther king and jfk

  • lets not overreact......

  • Wow, loved how he held it together and said what he needed to say..

  • i absolutely LOVE how they laugh at his comments up until like 0:24 and he looks at the audience and it goes silent his eyes shut them up alone.

    They then applaud him later.

I cant bring up words to describe the depth of iggys soul he reached into to talk to these people

  • Music.

mY mELODIES WILL TURN UR SHOulsrs,

    I drunk wwith Sid Vicious

  • i love how are you kids love to debate and argue over a bands genre of music, mogwai is a very diverse band and has influences from all sorts of musics, so good luck trying to put a label on it, just accept the music for what it is, who gives a shit about labels

  • I love this song. I think it's great that Mogwai sampled it. This is definitely one of those moments when a genius on the defense sets the world straight. It's amazing.

  • fucking brilliant!

    thx 4 posting

    ;-)

  • Iggy FUCKIN RULEZ

  • To PSYCHOSLICER:

Like Mike Muir said, "I trust no motherfucker that won't walk out in front of a moving car with me".

Who fucking cares what Mike Muir said? What does that have to do with the quality of this music? I guess you find solace in the "clever" words of a fat washed up 80's hardcore leftover.

And I like him, so go figure!

Maybe all you need is just a Pepsi.... but they won't give it to you will they? That's because you're CRAZY.

  • all i wanted was a pepsi...

  • "a fat washed up 80's hardcore leftover."

How is your sister, by the way?

    LOL.

  • Oh, so you are a genre-fag. I'd like to apologise for being courteous to you, as genre-fag's don't deserve it. Putting labels on bands... have you seen this video? Watch this video, then realise what a dumbass you are. LABELS ARE SATANISM

  • If you think that Mogwai believes they are punk or has even attempted to be punk, you have freakin gravel for brains.. lol That's like saying that Red house Painters in ska.. lol

  • Who cares how any of you wankers want to pigeonhole this band.... chances are it's way fucking better than YOUR band.

  • Ehh this is post-rock or indie if so lol, not punk, and it is actually good Imo

  • punks 4ever

  • What happend to unity.

  • Satanism?

  • Yes, the devil has a lot to do rock in roll. More so the blues. It has been " The Devils Music" for a very long time.

  • I hope you are fucking kidding.me "blakedood." You are the epitome of ignorance if you mean what you said. . I bet you don't even know what (epitome)means. You are the virus that dooms our evolution if you think shit like the way you do. Please kill yourself and do us all a favor so humanity can further itself. Dont have kids!!

  • chill out, he's being sarcastic.

  • Comment removed

  • I don't think Mogwai suck, but if you would care to tell us your reasons for believing they do then I for one will be open minded and listen.

And using this recording of Iggy Pop is one of the best things many bands have done for a long time.

  • YES DUDE!! Thought I would find you here

    <3

  • OMG so gr8

  • iggy pop

  • wow... this is my first time listening to this band, and I am liking them :D

ima go check out their other stuff

  • check my new tribute about mogwai at my profil,i created a video clip and i hope you like it!the song named :you dont know jesus"

  • Someone got the transcript on this interview?

  • there is one live version of the song played with violins, but it isn't nearly as good as the version I heard. the only studio version from Rock Action is played with guitars... and is extraordinarily beautiful like most of their work... but is still just a regular 5/5 star song :P

  • does ANYBODY out there know the version of "2 Rights Make 1 Wrong" spliced with this exact interview, played with violins. I found it downloading random songs on Napster or something 7 or so years ago. It sounded like a studio recording of some sort, but to my knowledge I have every song they've recorded plus a few concerts... but can't find THAT recording. I would be grateful if someone knew what I'm talking about and knows where to find it!

  • I've long awaited this band.

  • The fucking brilliance of this will go down in history.

  • is it just me or does everything this band creates seem to be perfect?...the atmospheres, melodies, timing, feel, mood -everything....

I wish more people had the patience for their beautiful music.

  • I don't. I really don't. I think it was removed from their myspace a couple of years ago but there was a little paragraph about how in the past few years the trend of enjoying and then abandoning bands has become endemic. I feel that people who like Mogwai like them forever. I don't want Mogwai to become another one in a troupe of ever-growing forgotten bands. It's too good to be discarded.

  • Do you understand what I am saying sir?

    so quoteable

  • "you dont have to call me a sir" "no, i dont have to. i forgot your name."

  • Man these guys better not eat after midnight... or we will have some serious problems with gremlins

  • this guy knows how to speak the truth.... the truest stuff ive ever heard, how about that wow.

  • So full of himself LOL And why should'nt he?

  • Beautiful.

  • This guy is indeed a narcissic person ... but the music is quite beautiful ...

  • I don't see him as narcissistic so much as showing a guileless enthusiasm for music. He believes that what he's saying is important and that the music is important. That's what makes this clip so great. The contrast between the host's skeptical reserve and Iggy's effusive eagerness makes him look less like a hardcore punk rocker than like an excited kid. It's pretty touching, actually.

  • Well he loves what he does of course ... but saying that he is a genius is quite weird if he's not a narcissistic person ... anyway there is no point in arguing on something this vague ... we don't really know him ....

  • he was joking and be sarcastic.

    BUT HE IS A GENIUS

  • the original meaning of the word "genius" is a person, who creates something totally new. freud, goethe or da vinci were geniuses, as well as any musician.

  • no. the original meaning of the word genius is a muse-like spirit of inspiration.

  • by "original meaning", i meant for what it was used in its bloom, back in the enlightenment and its era "storm and stress".

  • Da Vinci, Freud (debatable) and goethe gave something to humanity, made a true impact.

Music just tickles the fancy of some people. I personally despise Jazz, but I respect that alot of people love it. Doesn't make it something awesome, its just entertainment.

  • its the creation of something new, that is. and if you accept da vinci being a genius, what does art do to you other than honest music?

  • Well, Da Vinci etc, are pretty much timeless with works spanning various styles and forms.

Music is very much in tune with the pulse of a people of that period. Theres a good reason why not many people are getting down to some phat harpiscord beats. In 100 few, if anyone, will remember the people we idolise today.

  • you're right about that, but would you deny any great painter the entitlement of a "genius"? the fact, that people forget about the geniuses of music shouldn't become a valuation of their art.

  • dude this is Iggy Pop!
