People complain too much these days, I played the game for what it was, and not what I expected it to be. Surprise!! I actually had a good time playing it.

Even with out the whole entire island as a playing field, I still enjoy this game! I do like the engine, the ballistics, the graphics, the 'feel' of the weapons and pretty much everything else. It's just the God awful AI, terrible MP experience, and lack of mission editor (for consoles) that suck... :|
@Enricksolt Actually you can go anywhere you want in real war, it's just that you will most probably die or get lost, but you can. There wont be a sign appearing in your eyes that says you are MIA and that you have to restart the mission :P

Even free DLC wouldn't do anything to save this absolute turd of a game. The controls are dire, the missions are boring, the gfx are bog standard at best. I bought this, played it for two (painful hours) then took it back the same day and sold it in disgust! Even the truly awful Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, is slightly better than this game.

Theres a new DLC which allows you to travel the whole island so this really isn't false advertising, they just didn't include the travelling in the main game.

Codemasters you peace of shit. They brought out a free roam as DLC but fucking charged for it. That's a new low. This needs a controversy and some more publicity just so maybe some fuck at codemasters doesn't get to con more people.
Now did they say "open world" or "free roam"? Every interview I heard they said "open world". I don't think this was ever intended to be like Grand Theft Auto or Mercenaries where you wander around, drive to a camp and then MAYBE pick up a mission. You have a mission, objective, and a time limit. There's no real point in meandering about for hours.
Point or not, an open world - within a gaming context - is analogous to a sandbox. I was expecting (a bit too optimistically) an actual dynamic battlefield with patrols, supply convoys, mobile artillery, etc. See the comments made about sitting back and letting the war resolve itself made by Clive Lindop (now of Crytek) and Sion Lenton.
That sounds a lot more like Mercenaries. Cold War Crisis didn't have much of that if I remember correctly. I have to play the game more.Unfortunately I don't have the time to dedicate to playing this or any game to any great length.
Maybe rather than a "gaming context" they were looking at it in a "military context". It's open world, but it's situational. It seems very mission heavy, not a free flowing type of game with a lot of randomness to it.

I was grossly confused by the content of this game. I was under the impression there would be set missions amidst a persistent war raging all about. No tethers, no time limits, etc. I expected a script to be running the outcome of the battle until you came to within a certain distance, at which point the skirmishes would be rendered. I appreciate the ballistics, etc. but this game is way more linear and 'small scale' than I originally thought.

The first thing I tried to do after finding the CRAPPY Mi-17 helicopter is try to fly to the volcano on the main island.But then the commander told me I was going off the mission area.I kept going and it gave me a mission failed screen.
Oh,did I mention that there's only THREE helicopters in the game that you can fly and that the only attack helicopter is in the Chokepoint MP map.
There's not even any tank you can drive!
OFP:Elite on the ORIGINAL XBOX was better than this!
Oh,and server browsing on the consoles is bugged too.
Also,the ONLY music in the game is at the Main Menu screen.The first Operation Flashpoint had an awesome soundtrack,but this just has yet another depressing main menu music.
The AI is pathetic.They often don't listen to your orders,and there's been times where they've teamkilled me as soon as the mission started!Also,it should not take 4 point-blank pistol bullets to the HEAD to kill an enemy.

Free roaming is bullshit. There is a glitch to free roam.
I managed to do that and to find my surprise it was really boring.
