Daniel, knowing privately exactly what you're playing at the end, it still amazes me how complex, intricate and gorgeous it all sounds when meshed together. Tones overlap and create textures of their own. (cries as loop of 4:41-5:13 beckons hauntingly in background)
Love this song, Daniel! Definitely one of my favourites of yours. Just a quick question; when you recorded your acoustic, I noticed you used two mics, I just wondered what make you used
It's a pair of Rode NT5 mics (they sell them in packs of 2). I find acoustic guitar sounds a lot better with one mic on the sound hole and one on the strings. Sometimes I use something bigger like an NT1 on the sound hole (e.g my most recent song).
Thanks very much! I'm looking at investing some money in Pro Tools, as it seems like the most compact and afford option for recording my band whilst I'm at university. You can pick the 'essentials studio' for about £100, which apparently is pretty good.
Hey Daniel - could you do a loop of the beautiful outro, in which you could also show us what the electrics are doing (since we've had the chance to see the acoustic, drums & bass)... Wonderful yet again. ERIC
GARY GLITTER hahaha. Man I know deep down on some level it must tear you up that you're not getting PAID for this! You're a legend and I'm telling all of my friends to check it out.
the primose league is awwsome!dude i dont know what id wrather do seeing five daniel earwickers in conncert or seeing like 4 non cloned smithhs i choose fove of you not only would it be great music but it would also be a scientific breakthrough seeing clones :):):):):)yay
this song has alot of meaning to my girlfriend.. as shes had alot of trouble with her mother throughout her life.. i think this song hit a little nerve.. but not in a bad way!
aside from the stealing cars bit :P.. i think alot of the lyrics had alot of meaning.
And VERY NICE Rickenbacker bass, is it a 4003? Looks beautiful. I love your collection. People are talking (well, joking?) in the Rickenbacker forums of you endorsing Rickenbacker!! Lol :)
What I find incredible is the fact that now I just assume that a new Primrose League song will be a favourite. One that I'll listen to on my way to work every day for about 2 weeks..... I can't think of anyone else who is that bloody consistent.... though I guess it helps that I have a near Pavlovian -pleasure reaction to the sound of a 12-string Rickenbacker...
Again another fantastic song. Why your music isn't out 'there' with the greats is beyond me, maybe in this way it already is I don't know. It's far better than anything new I'm hearing at the moment coming from the UK.
Everytime you post a new video (regardless of its a cover or an original) I feel like I'm a 5 year old on Christmas morning about to open a present. I just had a long boring day at school today but it now seems worthwhile now that I get to hear another of your masterpieces. You are the most creative person I know of. Thanks for everything. :)
Incredible comment, thank you. School is usually boring, but don't worry - it only lasts a decade and a half or thereabouts, then it leaves you alone, apart from the horrible nightmares.
@yugosake - thanks! For some reason if I reply here then it disappears... probably because I included a link. To read yugosake's music blog search on Google for: monitor down music
Wow, another great one. "Letters to Cyril Connelly" is shaping to be 2009's album of the year... no joke.
Everytime I hear a new Primrose League "release" on youtube I get a feeling of excitement similar to when I'd pick-up a great new EP from Tower Records (R.I.P.) years ago... Thanks Daniel, keep 'em coming. Your music is seriously some of the best stuff out there.
Mr. Daniel Ear Wicker, aka the Primrose League, you inspire me!!! I dig your ability to play all the instruments and the great quality of recording that you achieve! Great job! I look forward to your next recording!
Thank you very much indeed, kind Sir. Perhaps you noticed the reference to the bass line of 'Can't Get There From Here' during the ending of this song? e.g. around 4:53
Daniel one last question I wanted to ask you... are you recording straight from your guitars into your interface, or do you use amps and mic them? I'm very curious about that.
It'd be cool if you did a walk through of how you record something (not anything long, maybe just two 30 second tracks done over each other, such as a bassline and a guitar riff)
The guitars go direct into the desk thing and the raw signal is recorded. I use the Digidesign Eleven plugin, which lets you pick an amp/cabinet and a mic. I mostly go for the Vox AC30 or Fender Twin, with a Shure M57 mic.
I don't really have a system for recording, but I might do a kind of demo at some point, thanks for the suggestion.
I think mixing is very hard. I usually play it back on an iPod and try comparing it to how "real" songs sound. Sometimes it takes a few attempts.
By the way, your My Bloody Valentine full cover inspired me to do a cover of "Soon"! I'm planning on getting the video up maybe today or tomorrow if I have time to record everything (we're cleaning our basement, and we just got new cymbals and a pdp Super Rack for mounting everything!) Thanks for that, haha
Daniel do you find it a little more challenging to do alternate picking on a 12 string guitar? I love the sound of them and am thinking of getting one but was wondering about this..
It's a little harder, especially on the 330/12, but it's more to do with the left hand fingering - the right hand picking is okay, I find. This time I came up with the pattern a couple of days ago on a 6 string but then recorded it with a 12 to get the fuller sound, and it was like learning it all over again! You have to have really spindly fingers. My acoustic 12 string is okay because it has a wider neck (though I mostly seem to use that for rhythm parts.)
just popping by to say this song made me insane with awe this time last year..and i am happy report, im still insane xx :)))
