The Air Force are the only one's that have a dedicated mos for gunners. Army door gunner's are usually chosen from within the battalion or brigade and not necessarily from a aviation background. I deployed OEF 08-10 and we had a cook, cav scout and vehicle mechanic door gunner's. After the deployment is over they return back to their normal units and duties.

In my time it was the UH-1H , door gunners could be the crew chief or some other slob we grabbed. WOOP WOOP and so on....

@CGautereaux He means an MOS, Ratting is the Navy term. But no, their is no MOS for door gunner. The crew chiefs are, that would be 15T if you want to know the MOS.

The crew is almost always the door gunner, occasionally they take infantry or others as volunteers for it.
