@andrew31593 its based on ancient, deep chinese philosophy, almost a direct quote from Sun Tzu's Art of War, the classic, oldest military treatise exisiting in book form today and the foundation of all military warfare as we know it.
@BossGamerKnowsBest haha same here bro. But after 10 years training i finally figured out what he meant... tkd doesn not absorb like water does! i converted to wingchun, Bruce's mother art
Don't get set into one form/fighting style, adapt it and build your own, and let it grow, be like water. Water can be destructive like the crashing waves in sea, and it also flows, adapt to your opponents and situations.
Every time I watch this interview I get chills. He was unrelentingly intense in everything he did. Of all the internet memes, the word "epic" has never been truer to form than with Bruce-fuckin'-Lee.
Water is the fluid and infinite energy of the yin/yang, the perpetual evolution and balance between the sunny rising or shady sloping side of the hill. Jeet Kune Do was the foundation of today's mixed martial arts where basically when you're on the street you have to adapt. If you do a stance :) , you're dead. Sometimes you have to walk away for survival sake, whatever the situation just flow.
he means, sometime you cannot fight back becasue you dont have chance. So you got to be fit with situation and learn more. Dont give up, til one day, one moment, you have your chance, then go for it and give a deadly punch. The important is, no matter how, just like water, sometime soft but tough and sometime tough but flexible.
@private828 waw thats gotta be the biggest pile of S**t i have ever read. do ya even know the meaning of martial arts? or you just talking random for the hell of it?
@nathanwemyss maybe i dont know what is martial arts but he is not just talking about martial art only. please try to read what is about "Dao" 道 before you thinking about his "JKD".
Yes, be water. When water hits an obstacle it goes around or through the cracks, when a stubborn boulder hits an object it either breaks or stops, but can never move on.
The principle (or lack thereof) is about ADAPTATION. It is not Bruce Lee's "own" but is actually referenced by D.T. Suzuki (1870-1966), as well as the message of mistaking the pointing finger for the moon.
@apuzyr he's explaining Lao Tzu's basic principles of Taoism. If he is referencing then he's referencing Taoism. It's more than just about "ADAPTATION" but also about the concept of been flexible in martial art. Be flexible when you facing your opponent "formless, shapeless". Be flexible on how you exert force can generate great power "water can can flow or it can crash". There are a lot more message behind this words which of course, not only about martial art.
It is not the force acted upon you but how you react to it that matters. Envelop and embrace your oppressor or abuser. Demonstrate real power since power is more important then force. Real power like Gandi is from within not without!
The water thing is all about the total package, water is all aspects of fighting. It's the most powerful force of nature. It can carve a mountain,it can flow through or around any obstacle as if to be unstopable. It is deffense and offense, it represents your state of mind . It can be angry, it can be calm. It is effected by it's environment just like you. You must flow my friend!
@UniversalMinded Wow, check wikipedia about bruce, and theres one video here that he said he dont believe in God. Now you stop playing! Go buy the Bruce Lee book 'striking thoughts" there he said he dont believe in God. In one interview, he was asked if he had a religion, bruce said "no whatsoever" then he was asked again if he believe in God, he said "to be perfectly frank, i really dont believe in God" Now what?!
@JakeHustle2 That does'nt nessesarily mean that he's an Atheist, but i would'nt care even if he was, he's still my idol, just because people have different beliefs does'nt mean we can find a common ground or more importantly get along with each other, right?
To be tasteless like water you put rose syrup into water it becomes sweet you put lime syrup into water it becomes lime juice and if u put a tea bag into water it becomes the tea be tasteless like water my friend.
@xARMANAA If you knew the context it makes perfect sense. He was describing his style of fighting. But, I guess looking into the context of things is far beyond your abilities... I apologize.
This also applies to the battlefield of competing ideology. If one is bound by a stagnant world view. Well, one will always lose. I send my warm, kind and most humble regards :),
If you put it in the titanic, it sinks the unsinkable ship. I think Bruce is saying something that seems very simple and childish, but its no less brilliant. He's absolutely right. One needs to adapt to their surroundings and be less stubborn, and have a more open mind. Given the racism and climate of the era then, and today, the message has lost none of its strength or significance. Simple, sound advice
@tkhushrenada your understanding is wrong, this is not what Bruce Lee means, you see 'Being Like Water'...This Is Our 'Main Defense',if you be like water No1 will catch you,no1 will be able to attack you, and you will be able to defend yourself in any environment...being like water is very much along the lines of intimidation and standing up for yourself, like a lion defends is terrority, but dont get it mixed up with attacking, being like water has nothing to do with attack, only self defense
@TOWinkworthIpswich yes, retard, it has everything to do with attack and NOTHING to do with defense. You throw water at someone, it will hit them, no matter what. You are a dumbass retard and are in much need of a life.

but that i think i share the same opinion as Bruce Lee when it's about fighting... your body needs an anticipating feeling when fighting, that's the control during battle.
Bruce Lee only studied the rudiments of WING CHUN, who nothing more that one of the lots of School styles Shaolin Southern.

@anonymus1ful you know nothing about Bruce Lee ... Maybe you know nothing about fighting.... Bruce Lee studied beside of Wing Tsun many arts , like Boxing , fencing , Savate , ju jutzu , judo etc. He dropped the Wing Tsun defense in favour of Boxing and Savate moves... He was interested in fighting as a whole conzept and not only in styles...
Don't believe Bruce Lee was a Wing Tsuler... he tried to be a completed fighter

now if you put the water in a tea pot is one out of two;

It is very accurate to say this was Bruce Lee's Philosophy. He taught it and talked about it very often. No, he didn't invent this philosophy, but he practiced and believed it. He believed in learning and absorbing all fighting forms, having no single style or way. During a fight, you could then adapt your style to whatever was needed to overcome your opponent by flowing from hard to soft, aggressive, to defensive styles, changing, adapting, and flowing while searching for a weakness to exploit
"Sii come l'acqua che trova la sua via attraverso le crepe. Non essere irruente, ma adattati all'oggetto, così troverai una via per aggirarlo o attraversarlo.
Libera la mente, sii senza schemi. Senza forma, come l'acqua.
Se metti l'acqua in una tazza, essa diventa la tazza. Se metti l'acqua in una bottiglia, diventa la bottiglia, se metti l'acqua in una teiera essa diventa la teiera. L'acqua può scorrere o travolgere, sii come l'acqua amico mio." (Bruce Lee)
flowing water never becomes stale. We live in a very stagnate society. Imagine driving them over the road trucks for hours at a time, talk about becoming stagnate, also how many people have sit down jobs in this country? MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
This is because, like Bruce Lee, i believe in being "like water", i don't believe in different styles, we all have the same body and can do any moves or techniques we want (no offense to those who have disabilities, of course)
For example, a person who does Judo can go learn and use a move from a person who does MMA, it doesn't matter. Thats a bad example, but you probably wont really understand it unless you do martial arts. Be like water, my friend. xD
Alot of people don't understand Lee or what he was saying...When Lee was saying be like water...He was saying this...Be able to adapt to anything...OR Fit in with anything or style in the martial arts...That the form of whatever style is in front of you...Water can take the form of anything...So Lee was saying he can blend in and handle any style by using no style as a style...When you think about this guy and look at what he accomplished...He's a freaking Genius when it comes to fighting.
i was about to write a description of what he was saying, then i noticed that MrJournalism101 already wrote an accurate one... ive been doing martial arts for a little over a year, and i train twice a week, but the nights i dont have training i train at home. Technically, i do Hapkido (if you wanna know what it is, look up the video King of Hapkido, that has a few good guys in it), but whenever someone asks me about it i say "I do Martial Arts."
It means to adapt, to flow. To be able to be sfot and hard, to be strong yet mobile. Water can seep through the smallest crack, yet it can destroy everything in sight.
dude, you probably dont even know anything about ninjutsu, you fat ass japanese wannabe weirdo with no friends. go get a life. or get in shape and learn a real martial art, like jeet kune do!!!
ha as a martial art, its got nothing on jeet kune do, because Bruce Lee is the creator of Jeet Kune Do. Utilixing different aspects of various arts to form a formless art. that was the best.
A foreshadowing of events to come occurred on May 10, 1973, when Lee collapsed in Golden Harvest studios while doing dubbing work for Enter the Dragon. Suffering from full-body seizures and cerebral edema, he was immediately rushed to Hong Kong Baptist Hospital where doctors were able to reduce the swelling through the administration of mannitol and revive him. These same symptoms that occurred in his first collapse were later repeated on the day of his death.
Have empty rhetoric that sounds deep... but is shallow... and flaccid... devoid of any meaning... Like a pretentious prick. Put a pretentious prick in a interview, It becomes the interview. Tell a pretentious prick your anecdote, it becomes his anecdote.

He believed in learning and absorbing all fighting forms, having no single style or way. During a fight, you could then adapt your style to whatever was needed to overcome your opponent by flowing from hard to soft, aggressive, to defensive styles, changing, adapting, and flowing while searching for a weakness to exploit

In all honesty everything you just said was kung fu and bruce philosphy is sick but way to serious of a person.

"Sii come l'acqua che trova la sua via attraverso le crepe. Non essere irruente, ma adattati all'oggetto, così troverai una via per aggirarlo o attraversarlo.
Libera la mente, sii senza schemi. Senza forma, come l'acqua.
Se metti l'acqua in una tazza, essa diventa la tazza. Se metti l'acqua in una bottiglia, diventa la bottiglia, se metti l'acqua in una teiera essa diventa la teiera. L'acqua può scorrere o travolgere, sii come l'acqua amico mio." (Bruce Lee)

Bruce Lee is legend.

Please stop saying, these words are "Bruce Lee's philosophy".
First, this analogy to water is as old as kung fu.
And second, more important, he's just quoting a dialogue from a movie in which he acted.
I respect and love Lee but I think it's cool to have my feet on the ground.
Cheers !

flowing water never becomes stale. We live in a very stagnate society. Imagine driving them over the road trucks for hours at a time, talk about becoming stagnate, also how many people have sit down jobs in this country? MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

You Also Have To Look At The Spiritual Meaning in it. It has a double meaning in it Water Is Life

i never get detailed until they insist..

Water can seep through the smallest crack, yet it can destroy everything in sight.
felthrian 2 years ago
Being in a state of continuous flow, to be water, is to be able to adapt instantly to whatever is needed, in both martial arts and life.

ha as a martial art, its got nothing on jeet kune do, because Bruce Lee is the creator of Jeet Kune Do. Utilixing different aspects of various arts to form a formless art. that was the best.
Aven0234 2 years ago

A foreshadowing of events to come occurred on May 10, 1973, when Lee collapsed in Golden Harvest studios while doing dubbing work for Enter the Dragon. Suffering from full-body seizures and cerebral edema, he was immediately rushed to Hong Kong Baptist Hospital where doctors were able to reduce the swelling through the administration of mannitol and revive him. These same symptoms that occurred in his first collapse were later repeated on the day of his death.
