Fungi, bacteria and viruses are all around us all the time. The reason we do not succumb to them easily is that we have strong immune systems. Bees' immune systems are less robust, as they have partially externalized this in the form of propolis. Under pre-20th-century conditions they would almost never have encountered synthetic chemicals, such as pesticides and herbicides, and I believe that it is these substances that are undermining their immune systems and causing collapse.
