(Wish we could edit.) To clarify, I don't think it's the recording tech. I have _Pawn Hearts_ on CD and _Godbluff_ via iTunes, and they both sound nearly as murky as this video. Other recordings I know from the same period aren't this muddy, even fairly standard ones like Amon Duul II's _Yeti_. Hell, even Faust sounds clean compared to this, and they're pounding oil drums and piling strangled oscillators and mutant brass sections into the mix. Did VdGG just not work well in the studio or what?
The VdGG deserve at least the same fame of Pink Floyd, Genesis, Jethro Tull, King Creamson but nobody seems to know them. When I was a young boy they used to play live on the Rimini Beach night clubs. I never went to their concerts. How stupid I was!
VdGG is one of the only bands that can be this excessive and get away with it. If there is anything this song evokes, it's presence - the sheer disbelief at being alive.
Darkness (11/11)", es el tema que abre el disco "The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other", segundo en la carrera del grupo inglés Van Der Graaf Generator. Año, 1970.
I'm hearing Genesis, Traffic, King Crimson, a little Tangerine Dream among others. Awesome. Wish I had a joint.

@daven58100 I am not hearing any of the people you mention. I just hear Van Der Graaf here, thanks.

Is it just the encoding, or is this really badly produced? It's as if everything VdGG recorded in the 1970s sounds like it was filtered through mud.

Very very dark, starting from the blind and soundless outer space - only the stars are lighting ... five stars indeed.

That is one messed up saxophone sound in the solo at the end. Love it!
